How and When to Sign “Hey!” Socialization into Grammar in Z, a 1st Generation Family Sign Language from Mexico

Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This paper is a clearly written sociolinguistic and ethnographic study of the acquisition path for a pragmatic sign HEY2 in a family sign language. I only have a few suggestions and caught some typos.
Rather than presenting the transcription key in text on pg. 9, the author could create a Table with this information so that the reader can easily use the key to decipher the transcripts.
The video stills are not always easy to see. I recommend that the author place the videos clips on OSF (https://osf.io/) so that readers can access the clips as supplementary on-line materials. This is relatively easy to do, and the link to the OSF materials would be included in the published pdf.
Could the author comment on whether some behaviors are typical for children who are not in a signing household? For example, pointing gestures are common between 9-12 months, and I suspect that tactile attention getting may also be common (e.g., tugging on mom’s clothes).

Footnote 15 “I that Austin German . . “
Pg. 25, line 851 “and separate out” should be “separates”
