4.5.1. IE Theories
- Thìscali (Oliena) < Paleo-Sardinian *Θīskălī < PIE * *Dʱĭhₓ-s-kə̥̥̆ₐ-lĭhₐ ‘the little (mountain) in the set of the territories which are in plain sight’. This theory is probable, as the landscape of the region is filled with small and steep mountains leading into the Tiscali village (Figure 11).
- Thorra < Proto-Indo-European *dʱŏrs-ăhₐ (f.) should correspond to the Old Indic dɦărṣă- m. ‘restraint’, with reference to the position of the nuraghe, in control of the ford on the Torra river and of the entrance to the village (among other meanings, ‘boldness’, etc., Monier-Williams 1899, p. 513), from Proto-Indo-European *dʱŏrs-ŏ- ← √*dʱĕrs- (cf. Pokorny 1959, p. 259).
- Thorcodossile, -dossile could mean de Ósile ‘from Osile’ (Sassari); Thorco is a personal name (also Forco, e.g., the father of the legendary medieval Sardinian Medusa), maybe from Proto-Indo-European *Dʱŏrk-ō(i̯), cf. Lithuanian darka m./f. ‘careless; clown’ (Kurschat 1968, p. 411) < Proto-Indo-European *dʱŏrk-ăhₐ ← √*dʱĕr-k- (cf. Pokorny 1959, p. 252).
