Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Review report on the manuscript coatings-1814456, submitted to the Coatings (MDPI):

The fabrication of full chromatography SiO2@PDA photonic crystal structural colored fabric with high thermal stability.

In the submission authors present the results of research on fabrics colored by self-organizing SiO2 nanospheres coated with dopamine, acting as a photonic crystal.

The Title and Abstract of manuscript reflect its content. From this point of view the paper could be considered for publication in Coatings.

Some clarifications, extensions and corrections suggested below should be considered before publication.

Q1. The research program was well planned and the results were presented clearly. However Chapter 3 (title: Results) is actually a results report. There is no comparison with the results presented in the literature.

Q2. It should be made clear how the different colors were obtained (line 96).

Q3. Figure 1 is unreadable and should be enlarged, the same remark applies to Figure 5a.

Q4. The photos in Fig. 4 are unconvincing and do not correspond to the colors in Fig. 5a.

Q5. Why was silk selected as the fabric? Can nanosphere-photonic crystals be produced on each fabric using the proposed method?

Q6. Please check the text and explain each of the abbreviations where they appear for the first time: (e.g. line 56: “GO”; Table 1: “PDI”.

Q7. Please check the English language style (e.g. lines 192-195; lines 202-206)

Reviewer 2 Report

1) In section 1, it would be good to introduce and analyze more works in this vast field, but it is mandatory that at the end of the section you briefly present all the sections of this paper, and how the authors structured the paper.
2) Briefly explain the statement in section 2.1: "All chemicals were used without further purification."
3) Some details regarding the ultrasonic dispersion are needed, in 2.2.
4) A broader presentation of the preparation of photonic crystals in section 2.3 is required.
5) Table 1 must be discussed in detail, including the results displayed in it.
6) Section 3.4 needs to be developed. More details are needed about the "Thermal resistance of the structural color of photonic crystals".
7) Figure 7 requires further discussion.
8) Insert a Discussions section, in which all the results obtained by the authors will be briefly presented, compared to other known results from the studied literature. All the original aspects will be highlighted, but also the way in which they will influence future research and the ecological coloring industry. Also, more details are needed about the "Thermal resistance of the structural color of photonic crystals" and about the "microsphere thermal stability".
