Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors: "Determination of the coefficient of friction in a pulley groove by the indirect method". I find the article interesting and scientifically correct.

  • Please indicate in the article what is the scientific achievement of the authors of the work.

Unfortunately, there are some minor shortcomings that, in my opinion, should be corrected and supplemented:

  • - inappropriate beginning of citation of literature items. The work first cited [3],
  • - the descriptions on the axes of figs 11 and 12 are illegible,

Author Response

Good day,
Thank you for the comments. According to the opponent's recommendation, I corrected and added:

  1. inappropriate beginning of citation of literature items. The work first cited [3],
  2. the descriptions on the axes of figs 11 and 12 are illegible.

Thank you very much for proofreading the manuscript.

Introduction: Please rearrange the references, as you start with [3].

3. Experimental determination of the coefficient of friction of a cable in a pulley V- groove: Please put used standard methods  (such is, as example DIN 82101 - FORM A( as appropriate reference, as you used for ref 31 to 35 related to national standard methods.

Figures 2 and 7, please give the appropriate legend related to figure.

Conclussion is too long. Put some part in discussion section.

Author Response

According to the opponent's recommendation, I corrected and supplemented, see the updated manuscript of the article:

  1. a) I renumbered the links in the article according to the recommendations from [1]
  2. b) I added a legend to pictures No. 2 and No. 7,
  3. c) I inserted a part of the text from the chapter "Conclusion" in the chapter "Discussion".

Thank you very much for proofreading the manuscript.

Yours sincerely, Leopold Hrabovský

Reviewer 3 Report

The aim of the paper is to present a method of measurement and to identify the magnitude of the forces acting on both sides of a cable belted in the V-groove of a cable drum. According to the authors the paper presents results that can be applied in the field of online monitoring of this type of lifting equipment for failure analysis, prediction and evaluation of their operational indicators.

THE WHOLE WORK IS INTERESTING.

POINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT:

  1. Please, provide a nomenclature section summarizing symbols and abbreviations.
  2. Please, provide some additional references to ref. [31]-[35] relating the reported national standards to international standards such as DIN, ASTM etc
  3. In Figures 2 and 7 please explain at the figure caption the reported numbers in the Figure
  4. Please, provide some statistical data of the fitting such as trust region, etc

In my opinion this work could be published after revision.

Author Response

According to the opponent's recommendation, I corrected and supplemented, see the updated manuscript of the article:

  1. a) I added a summary of symbols and abbreviations to the manuscript of the article (on page 5)
  2. b) I have added references to [31] - [35], which relate the cited national standards to the international EN standards
  3. c) I added captions to Figures 2 and 7,
  4. d) I give brief information about the assembly, see ad 4).

Thank you very much for proofreading the manuscript.

Yours sincerely, Leopold Hrabovský

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript is accepted  for publication in present form.

This manuscript is a resubmission of an earlier submission. The following is a list of the peer review reports and author responses from that submission.

Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper has investigated the coefficient of friction in V pulley groove. After evaluating the manuscript very carefully, I prefer to reject the article. The manuscript is more on engineering and there is no research element shown or presented. More importantly, most of the content in this article is well known facts in Mechanical Engineering Design. Added to this, the manuscript must use language editing, because it is difficult to understand the context in many places.

Also, I find that the content of this paper does not fall on the scope of the journal.

Abstract has no research outcome.

Title describes “indirect method”, but there is no such thing found inside the paper.

The shortfalls in the published articles and the research gap were not clearly presented in Introduction.

In-text citations were not properly done,

Example 1: Line 56 has “It has been shown that the coefficient of friction decreases with increasing velocity or pressure [8], [9]” where the reference [8] is “Kumar, K.; Kalyan, C.; Kailas, S. V.; Srivatsan, T. S. (2009) An investigation of friction during friction stir welding of metallic materials. Materials and Manufacturing Processes 2009; Volume 24(4), pp. 438-445”. How do you relate the FSW to this article?

In Line 80 why suddenly [31-32] appears?

Eq 1 has not included the centrifugal force. Of course, Fc is to be included. For reference, you may refer a book written as “Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design”.

The method of finding coefficient of friction for V-belt is well discussed in this book. You can also find how angle lap is to be referred for V-belt drive design.

In-text citation at line 103, 114 etc.

Conclusion looks longer than discussions.

In overall, my opinion is that this article lacks in research information.

Reviewer 2 Report

Good afternoon, respected editor of the journal and colleagues!

I bring to your attention my opinion about the article "Determination of the coefficient of friction in a pulley groove by the indirect method"

For a comparative analysis of the coefficient of friction in a pulley groove, I recommend studying and adding publications in intriduction section. I believe that with the addition of the above analysis of the literature, this manuscript will become more attractive.

After careful correcting above comments, the article can be published.
All the best! Hopefully, aside from the comments, your manuscript will become more valuable.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear Authors,

the manuscript concern research of the lifting systems used for the vertical transport of bulk materials and individual items or persons. In the literature is low describe of this type of transport mode, so this article is very important for the scientists and practices. The paper presents results that can be applied in the field of online monitoring of this type of lifting equipment for failure analysis, prediction and evaluation of their operational indicators.

Despite the great diligence of the authors, there are some shortcomings, my comments are presented below:

  1. Please enlarge figures 2, 3 and 4, the values in the figures are hardly legible.
  2. Similarly as above, figs. 6, 7, 8 and 10 should be corrected.
  3. Conclusions are too long, I think part of the text can be transferred to Chapter 4 Discussion which is comparable in volume.
  4. Check the text for editing errors, there are double spaces or they are missing, e.g. lines 292, 296.
  5. The literature is correct, but I think the authors may consider these items:
    https://doi.org/10.3390/su14052711
Testing polymer rollers memory in the context of passenger lift car comfort. Journal of Vibroengineering 2014, 16 (1), 225-230.

Overall, I highly rate this manuscript and find it printable with minor changes. I believe that the work will make a significant contribution to the scientific analysis and the issues of the operation of lifting means of transport.

Thank you

Reviewer 4 Report

After reading the manuscript several times, I believe that it should not be published in the Coatings. The work is interesting and well written but characterized by a more technical than scientific nature. The content presented in the work is closer to patents than to research work at Coatings. I believe that despite the very interesting content, the manuscript is outside the scope of the journal. This can also be found on the basis of the references included in the work.
As for the technical side of the work: in some figures the authors used commas instead of dots; Axis descriptions in figures 3-6 are missing.
