Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This article is interesting, but it is written very carelessly. Some statements starting with a verb. There are dots within some sentences.

1. lines 30-34: " Intrinsically Conductive Polymers (ICP) can offer advantages that enable environmental compatibility and features that, if the corrosive process does not cease, at least minimize it through the action of the anodic protection mechanism, as well as representing energy savings as they could completely or temporarily rectifiers that are used for the application of printed current for the formation and maintenance of passivation of oxidizable metals." Please divide this sentence into two or more sentences.

Intrinsically Conductive Polymers (ICP) can offer advantages that enable environmental compatibility, and characteristics that if does not cease corrosive process does, at least minimize it through the action of the anodic protection mechanism. In addition, organic coatings made up of ICP can represent savings in electrical energy, as they could totally or temporarily replace rectifiers that are used for the application of printed current to form and maintain passivation of oxidizable metals. [1,4]

2. Please write more clearly the aim of this paper.

OK

3. lines 57-61: There is one or two sentences: " Thus, this study seeks a metal/coating/electrolytic system in that the produced coating promotes or induces in a medium where the metal is passivable, the oxidation and reduction reactions that cause anodic protection of the metallic substrate of interest, without the application of current. external to the system, characteristic of this protection method, besides using a low amount of PAni in relation to studies that use PAni in the form of pigment. " Please write more clearly.

Thus, this study seek to evaluate the viability of the anodic protection of AISI1010 steel, without the use of external current, provided by an epoxy paint constituted with 1% of PAni EB binder, that is, in a concentration far below the methotologies that use PAni EP in the form of pigment.

4. lines 63-66: Please divide this sentence into two or more sentences.

The organic coating produced will be assessed for its ability to form or maintain a surface layer of passive oxides. Which together with a possible barrier effect of the coating may provide protection against corrosion of passivable metals, in order to replace, if not fully, the least at determined periods, the current anodic metal protection tools in harsh environments.

5. IEP Preparation; line101: Pt - Because the authors use many abbreviations, it is not well known what Pt is: Platinum or something else.

Platinum

6. line 114: " The AISI 1010 and Pt steel parts, " What is Pt steel, please add chemical composition of this steel.

Line 118 -121 : “…to AISI 1010 steel plates which are made up of 0.10 % of C, 0.01 % of Si, 0.42 % of Mn, 0.01 % of P, 0.007 % of S, 0.033 % of Al, 0.007 % of Cu, 0.004 % of Ni, 0.011 % of Cr, 0.001 % of Mo, 0.001 % of V, 0.004 % of N, 0.001 % of Ti and 0.0001 % of B, as indicated by the manufacturer. IP of CER was applied to Pt (99.9 %)…”

7. line 129: What is "EIT samples"

IEP

8. Thickness Measurement : How the paint was applied with a spacer. It would be good to describe the process of applying paint so that the reader could imagine it and add image of showing it. Please describe the methodology of the measurements of paint thickness and add images showing it in the Experimental part.
Equipment image and sample included.

9. What is TBI? I cannot find the full name.

CEP

10. lines 172-173: "As shown in Figure 4 and Table 1, CMP has certain peaks similar to those of PAni EB, because the molecule has aromatic characteristics." Figure 4 shows SEM of the surface of a CEP film; Taking into consideration Fig. 2 instead, this sentence is true, but Table 1 shows something different than it is shown in Fig.2.

CMP has certain peaks near to those of PAni EB.

11. line 174: "bands in the region of 400 to 800 cm-1" the region of 400 to 800 cm-1 is not shown in Fig.2.

Corrected figure.

12. SEM/EDX: lines 213-214: " The presence of a characteristic excitation peak of Au is attributed to the metallization process." According to the description of the methodology of Physicochemical and Morphological Characterizations in the Experimental section, what metallization process is described here and how it produces Au?

Excerpt included in the methodology “…, to allow the use of the EDX technique, the coated samples CEP and IEP were metallized with Au and Pt, respectively.”

13. How does metallization cause Pt? Before it was written that the metallization process led to Au. Please describe in more detail the methodology of performing SEM and EDX investigations in the Experimental section.

Excerpt included in the methodology “The use of Pt for the metallization process occurred due to the end of Au's availability to perform the tests and, as the use of different metals does not interfere with the practical results of the analysis, if opted to use them.

14. line 236: " uncoated AISI 1010 and Pt steel samples" Please, correct it.

Correcting “samples of uncoated AISI 1010 steel and uncoated Pt”.

15. lines 265-266: "tests were performed on uncoated AISI 1010 steel samples with CEP and IEP coatings" Testes were performed using uncoated or coated steel samples?

Correcting “tests were performed on samples of uncoated AISI 1010 steel and samples of coated AISI 1010 steel with CEP and IEP.”

16. What was the thickness of CEP and IEP coatings applied on AISI1010 steel?

It is described in the item Thickness Measurement.

17. lines 277 - 278: " the metal is in the process of being corrosion installed." Please write more clearly, what does "the metal is in the process of being corrosion installed" mean?

“That is, the region of potential in which the corrosion process of the metal exposed to this electrolyte occurs, according to the CV ...”

18. line 302: " Uncoated Pt behavior during the test, was" What was the reason for the comma?

Correcting

19. line 336: What is this hat?

I didn't understand the observation, but I made the correction in the "Electrochemical characterization tests of the EIS were performed on uncoated Pt samples and coated Pt samples with the CER and IP of CER, and on uncoated AISI 1010 steel samples and coated AISI 1010 steel samples with CEP and IEP. "

20. line 351: "Was observed" Why did this sentence begin with a verb?

Correcting “…where it was observed an incomplete…”

21. line 352: "a resistance value of 3.25 x 106 Ω.cm2" How this value was obtained from Fig. 10?

Correcting “ 2.75 x 106 Ω.cm2”, last point in Z '(ohm.cm²)

22. lines 352 - 353: "the sample has low corrosion" what does it mean?

Correcting “This spectrum indicates that the sample has a slowdown in the oxidation process due to the presence of a surface layer of protective oxides attributed to Pt passivation, since the value of actual impedance is quite high when compared to a metal such as steel.

23. line 430: "Figure 14ab" Please correct this.

Correcting

24. line 443: what is "MEV"?

Correcting “SEM”.

Reviewer 2 Report

1. the abstract must be rewritten (first sentence is too long, no IEP comment)

“This paper presents the production of an epoxy paint associated with a determined concentration of PAni emeraldine base binder, in order to increase dispersion of PAni polymer chains in the paint e allow physical contact between PAni chains, the electrolytic medium and the metal of interest. With this potentiate the electrolytic capacity of PAni to produce passivation, differentiated of research which using PAni in oxidized and conductive form, as paints pigment wich need for high PAni concentrations. The paint produced in this study will be called intelligent epoxy paint (IEP).”

2. paragraph from line 49 to 56 it is suitable for section 2.Materials and Methods

Dear reviewer, this paragraph was requested by the other reviewer for correction. I made this change: “Thus, this study seek to evaluate the viability of the anodic protection of AISI 1010 steel, without the use of external current, provided by an epoxy paint constituted with 1% of PAni EB binder, that is, in a concentration far below the methotologies that use PAni EP in the form of pigment. The which allows to name the coating produced as Intelligent Epoxy Paint (IEP).”

3. line 59: current. external - without .

Dear reviewer, line 59: Materials and Methods. I believe it is in the previous sentence, which I changed.

4. line 59: current. external - without .

“Which makes it possible to name the coating produced as Intelligent Epoxy Paint (IEP).”

5. line 93: reference 11 must appear with square brackets

Adjusted

6. line 140: being using conventional ......must be rewritten

“…using electrochemical cells of three electrode…”

7. figure 1 must be excluded - there are no important information for the paper

Figure 1 excluded

8. line 172 : Figure 4 supposed to be Figure 2

Adjusted

9. line 184: that that - only one that

Adjusted

10. in figure 2 and 3 : please represent the axes in English (not numero de onda or intensidade)

Adjusted

11. in figure 4 note separately figures with a), b) and c) , give the vertical axis measuring unit (like counts or something similar)

Adjusted

12. you don t have any remarks in text about P1 and P2 areas and spectrums from figure 4 - please make some remarks connections with the figures

Dear reviewer, as the EDX analysis for this study has a qualitative objective, there is identification of the chemical elements that make up the CEP and IEP paints.

The vertical units of measurement are not the same to facilitate the visualization of the intensity peaks.

The unit of measurement has been included.

13. in figure 5 note separately figures with a), b) and c) , give the vertical axis measuring unit (like counts or something similar)

Adjusted

14. please give information about the eds experiments: automatic or element list (why you don t realize the EDS analyze without the coating Au or Pt layer?)

Dear reviewer, as the EDX analysis for this study has a qualitative objective, there is identification of the chemical elements that make up the CEP and IEP paints.

The vertical units of measurement are not the same to facilitate the visualization of the intensity peaks.

The unit of measurement has been included

 15. line 236: what do you mean by : Pt steel samples or suppose to be only Pt samples

Adjusted: “OCP x time electrochemical characterization tests were performed on uncoated AISI 1010 steel samples and  coated AISI 1010 steel samples with CEP and IEP.”

16. line 265 : create a clear separation between the experimental samples used in OCP experiments for the entire article: use IEP instead of IP if is the case , if are different than please specify in the abstract the differences and mention in title

Dear Reviewer

The description of IP and CER are presented in the Introduction and IEP preparation, it was used to differentiate it from the IEP and demonstrate the performance of the PAni EB binder with the commercial epoxy paint.

As the article is extensive, I intended to make a table, but it would have the same result.

17. line 288: b) AISI 1010 steel with and without IEP - in figure 7 b) is only with and no bare steel , please modify

Adjusted.

18. line 344: phrase Electrochemical .....rewritten to understand the samples names and type, use comma if necessary .

Adjusted. “Electrochemical characterization tests of the EIS were performed on uncoated Pt samples and coated Pt samples with the CER and IP of CER, and on uncoated AISI 1010 steel samples and coated AISI 1010 steel samples with CEP and IEP”.

19. line 362: EIS assay .....must be rewritten

Adjusted.

20. line 376: Figure 12 ab, - Figure 2 b) or a) and b) or a and b .

Adjusted.

21. explain why do you use results from steel with IEP on the experiment with scratch and not from Pt with IP (IEP) - how are the results comparable (you have 2 substrates and 2 coatings IP and IEP - or are IP and IEP the same thing)

Line 89: “Was produced an intelligent paint (IP), through mixing a one-component CER, without addition of pigment or charge, to 1% PAni EB binder using dichloromethane as solvent. The purpose of this new IP is to achieve results without a possible  interference from the various components that make up the commercial inks used, where some of these could mask PAni EB real performance in corrosion protection, in addition to applying this coating to Platinum (Pt) which is theoretically immune to aggressive solutions. This paint was called IP of CER. “

22. line 435-438 : please provide some references for these results or more experiments must be realized in order to confirm this extraordinary effect of promotion of protective oxide on the metal surface even in uncoated areas - reasons why ??? or remove this sentence.

Dear Reviewer

The sentence in the article was changed, not being so emphatic, I intended not to exclude it, as it is an important and innovative result of the article. As there are no reference articles for PAni coating, only for ceramic and metallic coatings.

Adjusted: “EIS results for IEP coated AISI 1010 steel samples, purposely produced defective, for the exposure period of 0.25 h in the 2 molL-1 H2SO4 solution allow us indicate a possible acting of the PAni EB binder mixed in CER promote the passivation of metal, even in uncoated areas, but close to the coating.”
