This study analyzed the characteristics of the ocean swells in the eastern Caribbean area based on the ERA5 reanalysis data, identified storms, pressure system, etc and their relationship to the large eastern Caribbean north swells. These results comprehensively improve the understandings of the ocean swells in the region. Therefore, I would recommend publication after minor revisions. But there are still some problems that need improvement.

 

Specific comments:

  • The definitionof wave direction should be supplemented in the manuscript. Is it consistent with the ERA5 data?
  • L110-L117 in 2.2. ERA5 Reanalysis: The computation of daily averages is difficult to understand. These sentences should be explained clearly, especially for direction average.
  • L262-L265: In Figure 3, what kind of data were used for comparison of swell height between ERA5 gridded estimates and NOAA buoy observations, hourly or daily averaged data?
  • L266-L268: In Figure 4, what does the vertical coordinate represent? It is not clear what the count means.
  • L392-L394: ‘Storms that do not produce north swell events in the eastern Caribbean are all located, on average, north of the storm tracks that do produce north swellevents (Figures 12d-f and 13).’  What does the sentence mean? It is difficult to understand.
