Parental ADHD as a Mechanistic Barrier to Behavioral Parent Training Implementation: An Intergenerational Framework for Addressing Childhood ADHD
Highlights
- Behavioral parent training (BPT) is an effective treatment for childhood ADHD, but many families see limited or short-lived benefits.
- When parents also have ADHD, they often have difficulty consistently using BPT strategies, which reduces treatment effectiveness.
- Improving BPT outcomes for childhood ADHD likely requires an intergenerational approach that directly addresses parental ADHD.
- Integrating targeted supports for parental ADHD that explicitly address barriers to skill implementation (e.g., through CBT-informed strategies, digital tools, and tailored intervention content) may improve skill use, treatment durability, and real-world effectiveness.
