Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

There are some major issues to consider.

1. In the abstract, it should contain the aim/objective, methodology/experiments, findings, etc. Please rewrite the abstract.

2.      The introduction has no proper of focus, the novelty and knowledge gap of study are not known and the objective of the study is not stated.

3.      In the last paragraph of Introduction part, authors should justify their investigation. What can be done at the end of this study and what the results of this study provide for the literature?

4.      Figure 16  is not enough as well as have low resolution.

5.      The accuracy and reproducibility of the data should be presented more clearly

6.      Conclusion is not just about summarizing the key results of the study, it should highlight the insights and the applicability of your findings/results for further work, where is the recommendations for scientific community and possible using fields? Where those materials will be candidate for using...?

It is an extensive and interesting work to investigate the accuracy of PEPT to track microscale particle movements in turbulent flow. A minor is recommended to address the following:

1)    The PEPT technology is available for quite a long time. What is the exact improvement on PEPT in this work? What are the unique characters of Siemens ECAT EXACT3D when compared to other PEPT machina?

2)    To what extend the current hardware of the PEPT machine is improved when compared with other machines.

3)    The discussion and conclusion should be separated. It is not quite clear why the measurement accuracy for more complicated flow conditions is improved. It is due to hardware or software, or both?

PEPT can be used to study the fluid dynamics in scenarios where optical techniques cannot penetrate through dense suspensions. By using PEPT, the mechanism of two or three-phase interactions can be investigated for better reaction results, for example, to improve mineral froth floatation, or to develop strategies for respirable coal mine dust suppression, etc. Although at current stage, the trackable particle size, numbers of tracked particles, and temporal resolution may still not meet the requirement of some applications, it is still worth the efforts to improve this technique for better understanding turbulent flow and future more complicated usages.

Problems:

There are some apparent errors in the writing, for example, there are no Tables S1 and S2 mentioned in the text. A proof reading is needed to clear these types of errors.

The GATE simulation package needs a little more description. Why can the simulated locations catch the unexpected vibrations shown in Figures 7 (c) and 8 (b)? Shouldn’t it be an ideal path?

The wording of tracked path, simulated path, and true path are confusing in section 5.
