Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript is interesting and presents results from an investigation of preparation of foamed materials where TEOS and FAS are prehydrolyzed in MgCl2 solution containing H2O2 and then mixed with MgO to obtain hydrophobic foamed magnesium oxychloride cement, and their properties are studied. However, the manuscript needs to be prepared before publication, my recommendation are as follows:

Line 83: Mix, must go with m (lowercase).

Line 88: the mixed, must go with T (uppercase).

Line 120: v, must go with V, “according to the formula”.

Line 159: moisture Take out, should be, “moisture, take out”.

Line 182: TEOS, The, should be, “TEOS, the”.

Line 202: Why the 14 H2O2% content was not plotted? (in the preparation of foamed hydrophobic materials you mentioned that the amount of H2O2 added is 4% to 14%).

Line 203 Figure 1 Comparison, should be, “Figure 1. Comparison”.

Line 214: Kg·m-3) The pore, should be, “Kg·m-3). The pore”.

Line 237-238: the strength has also dropped from 10 MPa to 0.8 MPa. “But, in figure 5, it shows values above 10 MPa, ¿why?

Line 248: “Figure 5. the”, should be, “Figure 5. The”.

Line 249: On the y-axis, write “Relative intensity (arb. units)”.

Line 284: material On, should be “material on”.

Line 299-300: reaching a maximum of 150° at n (FAS): n (TEOS)= 1.8, “Why in figure 9, the angle (150°) is not shown, (from B1 to B5)?”

Line 313: The discussion of Figure 10 (b) should go before the discussion of Figure 10 (c).

Line 314: material. the, should be “material. The”.

Line 318: The letters a, b and c must appear in each corresponding figure.

Line 319: (a is the water, should be “(a) is the water”, b is the overall, should be “(b) is the overall.

Line 320: and c is the comparison, should be, “and (c) is the comparison”.

Line 333: It is necessary to indicate, that this result, is with respect to Figure 12.

Line 357: It is necessary to indicate, that this result, is with respect to Figure 14.

Reviewer 3 Report

The authors Jiaxin Huang, et al. prepared superhydrophobic MOC foamed materials. Prepared materials were well characterized.  The manuscript contains an original piece of work. The authors should make the following major revisions before the manuscript can be accepted for publication in Applied Sciences:

  1. Introduction

There are only 16 references in the introduction, some key papers are missing. Hence I suggest to extend the introduction, see eg. following papers:  Appl. Mater. Today, 2020, 20, 100766.  You can also cite more relevant papers from Applied Sciences or another MDPI journal: Appl. Sci. 2020, 10, 1683, Appl. Sci. 2020, 10, 2254, Materials 2020, 13, 4828.

  1. Experimental part

Please add experimental details for the XPS measurements.

  1. Results (I suggest to change it to Results and Discussion)

Figure 6. Add y-axis such as Intensity (a.u.)

Figure 7. Improve the quality or size of the image, it is difficult to read it.

Good luck with the revision!

Reviewer 3 Report

The paper can be accepted in the current form after the revision.

Is suggest only to replace Figure 7 with a new one in high-resolution.
