Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Smirnov et al. studied the formation and development of a convective mixed layer during the ice-covered period by using Large Eddy Simulations (LES). It is an interesting study and the result is also in agreement with the observational data. It is worthy to be published in Water after a moderate revision. Most of the Figures can be greatly improved. For example, Figure 3 is difficult to read. If the Figure can be changed to depth–time diagram of isotherm lake most publications, it may be easier to read. Figure 4 is also difficult to read, please add what x, y and z stand for. For Figure 5, 6, the lines are too thin and also hard to differentiate.

Reviewer 2 Report

This manuscript falls within the scope of the subjectthe topic selection has important scientific significance and practical value. The results are well presented and the conclusion has useful implication for understanding solar radiation to drive water temperature evolution in the ice-covered lake. Therefore, it is recommended to accept after minor revision.

1.     The first sentence of the abstract suggests adding the research background and significance.

2.     There are too many paragraphs in the introduction and the language is not concise enough. It needs to be revised.

3.     In the introduction, it is recommended to pose hypotheses and scientific questions.

4.     The horizontal and vertical coordinates of the drawings in the manuscript should be black lines, not gray lines.

5.     The format of the references needs to be modified and unified. Reference and cite articles: [1] Dynamic simulation of nutrient distribution in lakes during ice cover growth and ablation, Chemosphere,2021,281.130781. [2] Simulation and Seasonal Characteristics of the Intra[1]Annual Heat Exchange Process in a Shallow Ice[1]Covered Lake, Sustainability2020,12,7832.doi10.3390/su12187832.

6.     Conclusions need to be condensed.
