Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript "The application of polymer inclusion membranes based on CTA with 1-alkylimidazole for the separation of zinc(II) and manganese(II) ions from aqueous solutions" provides very interesting results and discussion which will be highly appreciated by the scientists from academia and industrial sectors. The authors have designed the experiments in a correct way; however, in my opinion the description of the experimental part should be improved: line 94: instead of "A specified portion" the author should provide the amount of the solution (i.e 10g). This information are important to the readers to repeat the experiments; line 96: the authors should add at room temperature after (or used temperature) in the sentence: After evaporation (at room temperature); line 102. the authors should add some bar scales in the figure 1a and 1b. From the figure it is difficult to understand the size; line 125: the authors should provide the full name of the SEM, same like in case of AFM. Moreover, in this section, the authors should provide information how the membrane cross-section were prepared; Table 1. The results should be given with errors.

Response to reviews

I would like to thank both reviewers for their time and kindly point out comments that will improve the substantive value of the publication. I answer the reviewers' comments below.

Reviewer 1.

Line 94 – the amount of solution has been refined instead of “A specified portion of the solution” should be “25 cm3 of solution

Line 96 – added “room temperature

Fig. 2 – membrane dimension added (real diameter 44  mm) and enlarging the microscope image – enlargement 1000 times

Line 125 added “Scanning electron microscope (SEM)”

Line 127. I completed the sentence with information on how the diaphragm section was prepared.
The membranes were visualized in 10.0 × 10.0 μm images - front view central and from a perpendicular cross-section along diameter.

Table 1. The values given are with errors in their designation.

Sincerely yours

Elzbieta Lenarcik

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper is well organized and the conclusions seem to be supported by the discussion. The scientific soundness of the manuscript is acceptable, but I want to make sure that the authors wash their manuscript before  submission. The clarification/explanation of some points should be provided for a better understanding of the paper.

1.     The authors should thoroughly check the format of the manuscript to make sure all the fonts, subscript/superscript are in a good manner.

-Line 15, the mol/dm3 should be superscript.

       -Line 17, 2.65 μmol/m2∙s should be superscript.

-Line 288-291, the fonts are inconsistent with previous texts.

-Make sure all the captions are justified, instead of centered.

2.     The quality of Figure 5 should be improved to make it more legible.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

I appreciate the efforts made by the authors to revise the manuscript and the quality is better in this version. However, I'm still concerned about the quality of Figure 5&7. Please re-plot the data in Origin or Excel, which I believe should help.
