Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

The review is very good wrote, and you have focused in the different field about de surface passivation, for example: Inorganic, Organic or MOFs. The examples and disscusion are clear and the recopilation show the vanguard advances in thsi topic.

My congrats for a very good job.

Author Response

Thanks for your nice and positive comments.

Reviewer 2 Report

In this review, Shi and co-authors systematically reviewed the characteristics, application mechanisms and examples of surface passivation engineering in PEC water splitting. They categorized the surface passivation structures into two types including inorganic passivation layers and metal-organic framework based passivation layers. On the basis, the design strategies and PEC properties of surface passivation materials were discussed in detail. Therefore, I recommend it to be published in Catalysts after addressing the following issues:

(1) The author should adjust the structure of part 3 to better match the application mechanisms and the corresponding references.

(2) In order to present the performance of the reported literatures more intuitive, a table of PEC water splitting performance need to be supplied in the revised review.

(3) The author should add more own insights in the summary and outlook part.
