Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Thank you for the given possibility to review this work. The manuscript is very interesting , but some issues should be corrected before considering publication.

Summary of the research:

The main research question coming from the text of the manuscript is the formulation of the methodology to calculate an emission based on the COPERT software for the motorway section in Italy. The introduction should be more detailed and there should be more comparisons to previous works, besides having the literature review section. The  scientific gap coming from the literature should be clear in the introduction. The research shows some novelty but should be better explained according to the suggestions below. The list of references should be extended, since the article contains swome information without shwoing the source. The work should be published but after improving according to the comments. Good luck.

Some detailed comments and issues regarding the text of the manuscript:

- in the introduction there are a lot of information without reference, so please indicate some, some suggestions: (Vehicle Emission Models and Traffic Simulators: A Review.)

- please make a short review of previous works in the introduction to make clear scientific gap to fill in, right now, there is very little information about the current purpose of the work,

-please underline more the novelty of the research,

-please at the beggining of the section methodology prepare the workflow and describe it to have a clear view of the purpose of the research,

-please put more references to the previous works (examples: Investigation of Vehicular Pollutant Emissions at 4-Arm Intersections for the Improvement of Integrated Actions in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs); The Role of Intersection Geometry in Urban Air Pollution Management.),

- in the line 202 there is an error with the reference,

- please inficate in what way the trajectories from the motorawy were recorded, was it the recording from the sensors in the road, cameras or the gps system?

- line 283 -  [Line described model calibrated]  ??

- the name of the subchapter 2.1 should be changed in my opinion,

- line 386=387 - "the 50 most 386 representative vehicle types in the Italian vehicle fleet were identified" please add those vehicles as an appedix to the research,

- Figure 12 - the name of the graphs, emission for vehicle - EC - please change the name emission is not energy consumption,

- please specify the limitations of the work in the conclusion section.

Reviewer 2 Report

1-      The article includes lots of interesting (numerical results) while the abstract is very general and simple. It is suggested to re-write the abstract to reflect better on the results as it focuses mainly on the methods in its current form.

2-      As readers can be from outside the EU, it is preferred to add a table with the main characteristics of each fuel type used in this study/model, i.e. Euro 3, 4, and 6d.

3-      Why only the above three fuel types were considered?

4-      Line 266, what is the justification for using 15 sec time interval in the modeling?

5-      Line 272, 273, what is the justification for using different equivalence factors for each vehicle type?

6-      Several references are missing, such as in line 202, as well as in each equation/factor/ reference value adopted from other sources.

The language is clear and well written.
