Interplay between Selected Chemical and Biochemical Soil Properties in the Humus Horizons of Grassland Soils with Low Water Table Depth
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The paper deals with the soil based on chemical and biochemical approaches. The paper gives important data related to global warming. The figures in the paper should be modified because it is hard to understand why conclusions are obtained from the figures.
1. Unit on Axis 1 and Axis 2 are not found. What are the parameters of the axes?
2. What are the horizontal and vertical axes?
These questions are clearly and easily understood from the figures.
3. Why is P9 included in Group I? P9 seems to be Group III from Fig. 4.

This paper investigates the interaction between chemical and biochemical properties of grassland soils with low water table depth. By processing and analyzing samples located in the Koyo Basin in central Poland, the conclusion that the biochemical indicators of the soil are mainly determined by the organic matter components are proposed. The experimental conditions are fully optimized and the experimental data are meticulously processed. However, there are too many background introductions in the abstract, so it is suggested to introduce the research content and research methods in more detail.

3.2. Microbial community and enzymatic activity: “In contrast, fungi numbers was largest in Group I soils, lower in Group II soils, and lowest in Group III soils.” There is a typo. “…. fungi numbers were largest…”
Please provide more details in text about Fig.4.
3.3. Linkages between chemical and biochemical soil properties: “Our PCA analysis showed that, in general, the first ordination axis explained ca. 67% of the most important factors, and the second axis explained ca 20%.” I do not understand. Please explain.
Please provide more details in text about Fig.5.
5.Conclusions: “Based on our results, it can be concluded that it is necessary to raise the groundwater table and improve grassland management to slow down organic matter mineralization.” Please explain.
5.Conclusions: “Good practice and prudent grassland management is essential to minimize the negative effects of climate change manifested in the form of prolonged droughts.” Please provide more details in text.
