The paper shows results about insulator breakage detection based on improved YOLOv5. The authors propose algorithm for insulator breakage detection, which is based on YOLOv5. The effectiveness of mentioned YOLOv5 algorithm was verified in the aerial image dataset. Obtained the results show that the mean Average Precision (m-AP) of the improved algorithm is more than 90%, and the detection speed FPS (Frames Per Second) can reach about 50 frames/s, which meets accuracy requirements of engineering applications.

Dear authors. Thank you very much for your interesting paper about high voltage overhead insulators. I am waiting for next one. I have some comments and suggestions, what should be considered in presented to review paper.

Comments and suggestions:

  1. I think, the introduction chapter should consist of some information about typical defects which may occur in overhead high voltage insulators. I did not find the information. please complete if it is possible.
  2. There is almost no information what defects can be detected by the use of studied methods. Only breakage defect is mentioned. Maybe there are some other defects, which can be detected by studied method, what would increase the area of application of the method. Please complete if possible.
  3. Please review editorial aspect in the paper, especially some indentation in the text.
  4. I think, the properties from formulas should have some units when they are described. If there are in SI system, it is not necessary.
  5. There is no number of text lines, what make the review more difficult.
  6. Fig. 13 – please describe the axis with the units. There is no information about the axis, what they mean.
  7. Fig. 16 – thermal pictures. Please say what value of infrared radiation emission coefficient was used in IR camera during the observation.
