Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article is a comprehensive literature review on Design for Sustainable Behaviour (DfSB). The Authors proposed new framework that connects three dimensions: empowerment, information, and motivation. But this manuscript concerns only the theoretical understanding how these dimensions are interdependent to each other.

The Authors did not present an impact of the proposed model (including three dimensions of DfSB) on the problem of carbon reduction (reduction of energy consumption). In the manuscript there is no analysis (no examples), proposed by the Authors, for an impact of empowerment, information, and motivation on the environmental behaviours. The manuscript requires the practical implications of the presented model to show designers, policymakers etc. how to use, and test (measure) this model and how to analyze the obtained results.

Article requires a short description of an impact of the proposed model on the problem of carbon reduction (reduction of energy consumption).

We have included a short discussions on how the framework can be useful in the context of energy consumption.

Please see Chapter 5.

2

Please explain an impact of empowerment, information, and motivation on the behaviors toward sustainable development (such as recycling, limiting energy consumption, pro-environmental activity, etc.). How the three dimensions will improve the sustainable behaviors? Please give some examples.

Addition to chapters explaining the impact of each dimension, we have revised and added a new section (Chapter 5 – Practical Implication) which elaborates on its practical impact towards practices for sustainable development.

The key to the integration of three dimension is their interconnectivity for bringing a longer-term effect on behavioural change – the Internalisation. Examples are added to elaborate its utilisation on behaviour change study such as instigating healthy behaviour and energy consumption.

Please see Chapter 5.

3

Please give (find) some tools that make possible testing and measurement of the proposed model (e.g. questionnaires, etc.). How results obtained from the model will be analyzed?

A typology is visualised to promote its use as a ‘tool’ in designing such strategy and for evaluating its effectiveness. Example of analysis case is described and cited.

Please see Chapter 5.

Reviewer 2 Report

An interesting paper discussing on the challenges of modern life and a smooth transition to a low carbon economy.

A short extension on the methodological part (except literature) and a more in depth discussion on the reflections paragraph would make the paper much stronger. Key findings or recommendations will make the paper much more impactfull to the reader.

The introduction to a three dimensions framework is being made, however a short  explanation on how this framework could be beneficial would made the introduction even stronger.

A short explanation is now added and revised at the end section of introduction.

Please see line 52-56

2

Line 121-122 If behavioural change is not a conscious decision then what is the influence to this?

An additional sentence is added to elaborate its influence. However, subsequent chapter does provide more detail on the influence of this ‘no conscious’ aspect.

Please see Line 125-127

3

Line 132, Perhaps it should also be discussed the fact that behavioural change does not always relate to materials, but to a broader concept of environmental good, community spirit etc. In other terms, is behavioural change only happening because of new innovative products or can be times where design and a vision for a sustainable future can empower people’s views and perceptions?

Word ‘materialised’ has been replaced with ‘designed’ so it covers more broad notion of intervention that is beyond product.

See line 137

Line 174 remove second ‘that’

The methods of the paper are less explained. A short paragraph as to how the concept of the three dimensions has been developed and what were the main stages of the analysis would support the document further.

We have revised the chapter 5 to correspond to the reviewer’s suggestion. We would like to make a note that selection of these three key dimensions are thoroughly selected and informed by the literature review.

Please see Chapter 5.

Discussion and Reflections. The Reflections are interesting and highlight the fact of a new framework needed, however the conclusion could be stronger presenting some of the key findings or suggesting concrete steps for the future. What will the DfSB do

for future generations? How could this be beneficial and why is the new framework so important?

We have added Chapter 7 (conclusion) to revised the manuscript as requested. It highlights the key findings and revisits the suggestions made for future study, and a wider application for future applications of DfSB.

Please see Chapter 7.
