The Triggering Effect of Gaps on Seedling Germination of the Soil Seed Bank in Tropical Rain Forests, Hainan Island, South China
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The article is very interesting and opens a big door for continuing this kind of research, which is needed due to the deforestation of most of the tropical rain forest of the world.
Only minor comments and corrections:
1) All scientific names include the Authority the first time they appeared in the text or may be included in a Table. A suggest to also include the Family in the Table.
2) The cite "Figure 1" is not mentioned in the text. It should be mention in the "Overview of the study site" section.
3) Check Table 1, wider the line for the Melastomataceae family, the last "e" is in next line.
4) Lines:
Lines 176-174, explain why you used a different number of seeds for each treatment.
Lines 330, Full scientific name when it is the first word of a paragraph.
Line 410, the year of the cite: Dows et al.
From line 156, check the margin of the paragraphs; it is moved to the right.

Major Comments
Comment 1: in the data analysis part. There is a need also to analyse the Mean germination index (GI) which is a good indicator on the effect of the light, temperature etc.of the studied species. They only use final germination percentage and mean germination time. So I recommend revising your analysis and including also the GI results. The formula is as follows
Germination Index (GI) was calculated using the formula :
Where N= number of new germinated seed,
T= time from the beginning of the experiment
Comment 2: One-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were used in the analysis. The ANOVA results in the results section was presented in a text form and there are no graphs or tables which show the ANOVA result. It is good to include the graphical/ table presentation of your analysis result so that we can see it the comparative results clearly
Comment three: include the statistical significance differences you used to separate the means is it 95% or 99%, (0.01 or 0.05).
Minor Comment
Revise the statistical result presentation like p=0 (line 271). Some numbers has to follow and present the full result. This could be example 0.00001, so write the full number.
