Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This manuscript describes a detailed study on alternative ways to simulate tree interactions in a mangrove forests. The mansucript is well written and the methods correctly applied. However, I don´t hink it fits into the journal´s aim and scope, as there is no "Remote Sensing" into this manuscript. Other than that, the main things to be fixed are a too lenghty mansucript (about 1000 lines and multitude of multi-paneled figures). In addition, the conclusions section is far too extensive. It is a regular discussion section, not conclusions, which should be concise and to the point. Also, the first paragraph in the introduction is not neccesary. If the Editor considers the manuscript can fit with the journal, then I suggest accepting after minor changes.

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear authors, The manuscript is an interesting read and an in-depth simulated narrative is presented well which increases our understanding of inter-state specific crown plasticity. However, I have the following observations which need to be addressed by the authors.

Introduction

Please clearly define the IBMs? mean filed models? SORTIE? I think it's an abbreviation used directly. Furthermore, authors are required to stay consistent with terms used for different simulation models.

1.1. Theories of plant competition

N/P-co-limitation?. Hopefully, the expert in this domain understands the meaning, from a remote sensing perspective, a large audience might not understand abbreviations directly used (presumably).

2. Another suggestions what if a general workflow diagram is included in the Materials and method sections to guide the readers with the flow of the designed research.

The third observation is it possible to simplify the equations used and explained this research.

Results

Please improve the quality of all figures in the manuscript, for instance, Figure 2 is pixelating, My suggestion is to extract numeric data from model results and plot the results with some standard plotting software, e.g. R, Python, Excel, etc. Also, change the font size and type of the Figures to match with the text. Furthermore, keep the same font and text size for all Figures. Also, Table 2 requires proper design in Microsoft word or excel.
