Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Lubis et al., in their manuscript “Sociodemographic and structural risk factors for dengue in a rapidly developing Indonesian district”, present a case-control study evaluating risk factors for dengue in a rapidly developing urban district in Indonesia.

Most similar published studies focus on very densely populated urbanised areas, and a study like this in a transitioning urban setting helps determine the key factors in that context.

The manuscript is well written and easy to follow, with a good flow. However, I feel the sample size is too small to determine the factors with confidence, and it would be better overall if the authors considered additional factors, such as health awareness and literacy regarding Dengue / other vector-borne diseases. The manuscript also fits within the Journal’s scope.

Major Comments:

  1. As I mentioned above, the Introduction and overall flow of the manuscript are well written and easy to follow, but the image quality in Figure 1 is poor. Could you please replace it with a higher DPI image? The text on the figure is hard to read and could be a size or two bigger.
  2. The study is based on data collected during July-September 2024, which is slightly dated and covers a short period. I am wondering how seasonal influences and vegetation around the semi-urban areas during these months affect the incidence of dengue cases. If the authors have any related data, they should consider adding it.
  3. Also, why was this specific period chosen? Was it associated with a high prevalence of dengue cases?
  4. It’s been almost two years since the data collection. How has the rapid development of the semi-urban setting affected the incidence? What are the current dengue cases, and have there been any changes to the socio-demographic status of the people compared to before?
  5. The authors should also attach the research questions or the questionnaire as a supplementary file. I also wonder whether any alternative formats of the questionnaire were intended to be provided to people who were not interested in answering via WhatsApp? This could boost participation.

Minor Comments:

  1. Page 2 / Line 59, italicise “Aedes aegypti” & Page 7 / Lines 215-216, italicise “Aedes aegypti” and “Aedes albopictus”.
  2. Page 8 – intentionally left Blank?
