Topic Information

Dear Colleagues,

Metamaterials are artificial composites or structures exhibiting extraordinary properties and functionalities which are rare in Nature. As ancient arts of paper folding and cutting, origami and kirigami have recently received a great deal of attention and inspired designs of mechanical and acoustic metamaterials. Many unusual mechanical/acoustic properties, such as bistability/multistability, auxetic effect, waveguide, and high reconfigurability, have been achieved through the complicated folding deformation. Utilizing the folding process, mechanical/acoustic properties and corresponding wave interaction can be tailored, and thus origami metamaterials are essentially tunable metamaterials. Similar to origami, kirigami is a paper folding technique that involves both cutting and folding processes, and can also form planar sheets into three-dimensional structures with on-demand functionalities. With new developments in both passive and active origami and kirigami metamaterials, many new exciting studies will emerge and promote the design and application of multi-functional metamaterials.
