As an important green infrastructure, urban greenways can provide a range of socio-ecological benefits and play an important role in improving the urban ecological environment and enhancing the quality of living. Currently, the relationship between service quality and the actual benefits of greenways has not been sufficiently explored in urban greenway research. This study introduces the concept of “efficiency”, determines service efficiency and service effectiveness as the evaluation dimensions, selects 4 first-level indicators and 12 second-level indicators to evaluate the service efficiency of greenways, and constructs an evaluation model using a combination of subjective and objective assignments. This study uses the overall service effectiveness index and the efficiency–effectiveness balance index to measure the overall performance of the greenway space in the hope of revealing the key factors and reasons that affect the service effectiveness of the greenway and providing a theoretical basis for optimizing the planning and management of the greenway. Using ArcGIS network analysis technology, image semantic segmentation technology, a questionnaire survey, network text analysis, and other methods to quantify the indicators, this paper conducts an empirical study on four municipal greenways in Nanjing. This research shows that the factors affecting the service effectiveness of greenways mainly include the landscape environment, greenway functions, transportation conditions, and supporting facility factors. The contradiction between the single-function positioning and the variety of user needs is the main reason for the imbalance between the efficiency and effectiveness of urban greenways. This study provides a new path to quantify greenway service effectiveness and enriches the greenway evaluation theory. Full article

Built environment professionals are instrumental in envisioning, implementing and managing the urban realm to ensure that it is health supportive and sustainable. Central to their education is developing a deep understanding and appreciation of this responsibility and opportunity. Despite some progress in the classroom, challenges continue given the long history of siloed and separated disciplines and curricula. The climate emergency, ongoing chronic health conditions, and more recently the global pandemic demand a continued reframing of education away from the tradition of sequential, separated and unlinked faculty and school-based subjects to be transdisciplinary, experiential and authentic. Such principles are embraced by the Planetary Health Educational Framework and One Health. Against this theoretical context, we present our long-term educational practice using the GreenWay in Sydney, Australia, as an outdoor classroom for school and tertiary students. This multi-purpose, complex and nature-based green corridor in the urban heart of an international city facilitates experiential and transdisciplinary learning from a planetary health perspective. Based on the successes and challenges of our teaching, we reflect on the implications for environmental educators to deliver authentic and experiential outdoor education that inspires and empowers the next generation to create health-supportive and sustainable environments. Green spaces in waterfront residential blocks, where the water landscape and green space intersect, have a special carbon sequestration effect due to the distinct ecological interaction between water bodies and green spaces. Studying the carbon sequestration efficiency of green space patterns is crucial for enhancing urban ecological quality. Herein, 100 residential blocks adjacent to water bodies in Shanghai were selected as case areas, and green space pattern classification, random forest algorithm and spatial configuration quantitative analysis were used to analyse the impact of spatial morphology factors, surrounding building environment and water–green coupling environment on the CS efficiency of the green space in residential blocks. The results showed that the importance of the green space morphology index influencing CS is significantly greater than that of the building environment index. Among the indices, the fraction vegetation coverage, coverage ratio of evergreen broadleaved trees and canopy coverage of the green space have a more significant effect. Moreover, the different types and compositions of tree species in residential green spaces have different impacts on CS. Residential blocks with higher levels of water surface ratio (Wr) have a slightly higher CS of the internal green space. In residential blocks 500 m from water bodies, Wr has a significant impact on the CS capacity of the green space. The blocks with an external greenway pattern and external greenway–green grid pattern provide an advantageous environment for CS. This study provides a reasonable basis for the development of riverfront green spaces to increase carbon sequestrations. Full article

Walking has been studied extensively in recent years. However, one is still hard pressed to find research examining what makes urban settings of different sizes across the Atlantic Ocean conducive to walking, especially in the presence of greenways and green open spaces. Streets and urban greenways both enable flows. Streets are mostly utilized to enable the flow of motorized traffic and people while greenways aim to guarantee the flow of water, nature, biodiversity, and people. Streets are designed to artificially separate motorized traffic from pedestrians, greenways are designed to create the natural conditions for a harmonious co-existence of people with nature. How would street users benefit from streetscape and urban design improvements aimed at promoting the peaceful, silent, and harmonious co-existence of nature, people, and vehicles? Distinct sets of codes and norms dictate how individuals ought to utilize urban public spaces and greenways. We argue that said codes ought to also be aimed at increasing the quality of public spaces and not only their flow capacities. This paper examines streets and greenways in Ballyclare, Leiria, and Scottsdale. We utilize Ballyclare’s High Street and Six Mile Water greenway, Leiria’s city centre and Lis River greenway, as well as Scottsdale Road and the Indian Bend Wash greenbelt and a segment of the Arizona Canal to analyse the positive characteristics and shortcomings of successful streets and greenway systems in three distinct geographic contexts: U.K., Southern European, and North American. The findings comprise the distillation of new results in the analysis of spaces of flows and permanence across the Atlantic Ocean. Full article

Urban green space can effectively optimize the urban landscape and environment and provide residents with space for daily leisure and recreational activities. In order to realize the green development of Macau, this paper takes the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) as an example, uses the green open space occupancy rate (GOSOR) to measure the level of green open space in Macau, and researches the planning positioning of Macau City’s green development, the layout mode of urban public open space, and the integration and optimization of the space in Largo of high-density neighborhoods, so as to explore the planning paradigm of Macau’s green development. In addition, the research data show that the per capita green area of Macau Peninsula is on the low side and extremely unbalanced, and there is a disconnection between some of the large-scale green patches on Macau Outlying Island; therefore, this paper proposes that the planning layout mode of “green veins connecting green patches” is suitable for Macau Peninsula and that the planning layout mode of “greenways embedded in jade” is suitable for Macau Outlying Island. On the other hand, in order to improve the problem of poor living conditions in the high-density city of Macau, the study proposes to make use of the unutilized Macau Largo space and carry out the optimization and transformation of the Largo space from “gray to green”, so as to release a large amount of green open space and enhance the GOSOR value of the high-density street area of Macau Peninsula. In many conurbations, the pressure on the quality of living increases and affects the most vulnerable human and non-human populations the most. This article describes a proposal for the mapping and design investigation of how a green metropolis can be developed. The approach distinguishes between the landscape producing pain, the ways of healing, and the opportunities to create environments that people can love. This approach reveals concrete and widespread pain in the metropolis, such as impacts on natural landscapes (rivers and mountains), air pollution, ecological degradation, and hydrological disconnections. The strategy to remediate this pain is to uncover hidden and altered creeks and rivers, creating an abundant zone of ecological space around them before human activities and urbanization change the land uses. In addition to this, specific design principles have been developed for hydro-ecological corridors, water retention, green islands, and greenways. Designs for these places can be replicated to support a healing strategy in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (MMA). Each place creates an environment that the urban residents will appreciate and preserve. The approach to analyzing landscape pain, designing healing strategies, and promoting local places of love can be applied to enhance the quality of life for many urban residents and non-human ecologies in metropolitan areas around the globe. Travelers’ attention to high-quality human habitats is increasing, and the role of urban greenways in improving the quality of travelling spaces has also been appreciated. This research aims at making the weight calculation of suitability more scientific and reasonable, clustering the shared bicycle travelling OD points according to suitability, and analyzing the distribution of OD points. Taking Xiamen as an example, multiscale geographically weighted regression and entropy weight methods were used to calculate the weights of variables using multi-source big data. The clustering of origin-destination (OD) points for shared bicycle travel are identified using the DBSCAN clustering algorithm, which can provide accurate support for greenway planning and shared bicycle placement. The results show that the density of tourist attractions, POI entropy index, road density, and intermediate are four important factors affecting the suitability of greenways. The clustering results of the shared bicycle OD points show that the high-aggregation areas of origin and destination points are located in the northeast and southwest directions as well as west and east directions. This study provides a theoretical and modelling analysis reference for greenway planning and design. Full article

Urban inland rivers are closely related to urban development, but high-density urbanisation has reduced the natural function of streams and the riverbanks are hardened into two parts, embankment walls and berms, which give rise to a variety of riparian landscapes. However, the difference in the height of riparian walkways affects the degree of their greening and landscape effects. In this paper, we studied single- and double-decker urban greenways, constructed quantitative indicators of spatial elements based on deep learning algorithms using an image semantic segmentation (ISS) model that simulates human visual perception, used random forests and multivariate linear regression models to study the impact of the height difference of the linear riverfront greenway on visual perception, clarified the impact of the visual landscape differences caused by different types of space on landscape aesthetic preferences (LP) and confirmed the impact of the specific extent to which landscape components influence preferences. The results of the study showed that there were significant differences in landscape perception scores between the single and double layers. (1) The influence of WED (negative correlation) and NI (positive correlation) is large in the single-layer greenway. The colour, material and structure of the guardrail can be beautified and diversified and the quality of the greenery can be taken into account to maintain the visibility of the greenery in order to improve the score of the single-layer greenway. (2) The significant influence of BVI in the double-layered greenway is positive. Water-friendly or water-viewing spaces can be added appropriately to improve the landscape score of double-layered greenways. This study is applicable to the regional landscape feature identification of single- and double-decker greenways on large-scale urban hard barge bank images, which realises the whole-region feature identification of a large-scale human perspective and is an effective expansion of analysis techniques for sustainable landscape planning and the design of riparian greenways. Urban greenways, as vital green infrastructures, offer a range of societal, environmental, and ecological benefits to city dwellers. However, planning their routes remains a complex task for urban planners. While most studies emphasize either maximizing the number of residents served or enhancing the environmental benefits along these greenways, the role of urban greenways in linking existing facilities like tourist attractions, urban parks, public transport stations, and other greenways has received less attention. This paper introduces an innovative spatial optimization model for the planning of connective urban greenway routes. The model aims to link these facilities while also maximizing the population’s access to the greenway. We developed a set of models applicable to different objectives of connecting existing facilities, such as maximizing the number of facilities to be covered, covering all facilities, and minimizing the distance between facilities and planned greenways. Bi-objective scenarios, including weighted and lexicographical models, are also presented. We delineated the MILP formulation of the proposed models. The paper includes simulation tests with empirical data from Lhasa, China, validating the model’s practicality and computational efficiency. Full article

Urban greenways are pivotal in enriching urban quality and fostering socio-ecological sustainability. Previous studies on urban greenway networks have often overlooked user-based experience efficiency, leading to the underutilization and insufficient translation of cultural services into human well-being. In this study, we introduce a user behavior-driven assessment framework for planning multifunctional urban greenways that connect parks with high green space exposure and maximize recreational mobility. Beijing’s built-up urban areas (BBUA) were selected as the case study area. Firstly, we evaluated the green space exposure of 331 parks in BBUA using an integrated “Availability–Accessibility–Adaptability” assessment framework as potential carriers. Then, through spatially explicit workflows and the least-cost path methodology, we leveraged a vast dataset of 70 million public transportation swipe records to optimize the alignment of multifunctional greenways, prioritizing the criterion of maximizing recreational footfalls. The results showed that the potential greenways network spans 1566.36 km in BBUA, encompassing 93.88% of parks and offering six diverse functions. It can serve 34.39–35.92% of bus recreation passengers, with this ratio tending to be higher on weekends. However, we identified obstacle points (non-greenway sections) in the networks based on residents’ view perceptions and panoramic street images, primarily located in densely built-up central areas and along southern trunk roads. By addressing these disconnections, the integrity and connectivity of urban greenway networks in BBUA will be improved. Overall, the framework we present can be used to construct greenway networks that maximize the perceived accessibility for bus-based visitors, with valuable implications for sustainable urban planning and regeneration initiatives. Background: Identifying the correlates of exercise behavior is essential to combating physical inactivity as a public health concern. The purpose of this study is to identify the correlates of physical activity among urban Chinese adults under the social-ecological theoretical model in order to facilitate targeted interventions to promote physical activity. Methods: Using the socio-ecological model, we conducted a questionnaire survey among 1459 urban residents in Zhejiang and Shaanxi provinces of China, collecting data on individual demographic factors, sociological factors, environmental perception, and exercise behavior. Binary logistic regression models were employed to analyze the relationships between exercise behavior and socio-ecological factors. Results: Male gender (p < 0.01), advanced age (p < 0.001), higher education level (p < 0.05), living independently from parents (p < 0.05), absence of childcare responsibilities (p < 0.01), residence in a county/prefecture-level city (p < 0.001), favorable neighborhood esthetics (p < 0.001), available greenways/parks (p < 0.001), and family support for exercise participation (p < 0.05) were significantly correlated with an increased likelihood of participating in physical activity. Male gender (p < 0.001), advanced age (p < 0.001), absence of childcare responsibilities (p < 0.05), good neighborhood vegetation (p < 0.01), availability of free neighborhood exercise facilities (p < 0.05), and support from friends for exercise participation (p < 0.01) were significantly correlated with an increased likelihood of engaging in physical activity for more than 150 min per week. BMI, community air quality, traffic safety, public safety, and level of social development were not major correlates. Conclusions: To promote exercise behavior, more attention should be paid to individuals who are female, young, have lower levels of education, bear childcare responsibilities, or reside in provincial capitals in China. Improving the habitat environment and providing convenient and affordable facilities should also be considered. Furthermore, support from family and friends can positively reinforce exercise behavior. Full article

Greenways are important natural environment places in cities, which have a great restorative effect on human physiological and mental health. The restoration effect of urban greenways on the physical and mental health of urban residents is affected by the type of greenway space. In order to reveal the restorative effects of different types of urban waterfront greenway spaces on the human body and explore restorative environmental factors, this paper firstly used the expert survey method to construct an AHP (analytic hierarchy process) model, which yielded three types of criterion-level indicators and eight types of sub-indicators. Second, taking Nanxun Avenue Greenway in Wenjiang District, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, China, as an example, it was divided into three types of greenway spaces—waterfront space, underwood space, and lawn space—on the basis of field surveys. A total of 30 subjects participated in this outdoor experience and collected their physiological and psychological data. The results of the experiment showed that all three types of spaces in the Nanxun Avenue Greenway had a restorative effect on human physical and mental health, and all of them were effective in lowering blood pressure and heart rate, as well as eliminating negative emotions and increasing positive emotions for most of the participants. The waterfront space had the best restorative effect, followed by the underwood space and the lawn space. The main restorative environmental factors differed among each of the three types of spaces. This paper provides insights and examples for exploring the restorative benefits of urban greenways. Full article

Greenways are an important component of urban green infrastructure. User experiences and visual preferences are highly related to human well-being. The influencing factors of user experience and the relationship between environmental attributes with visual preference were explored by using the analytic hierarchy process method and questionnaire experiments. In this study, the analytic hierarchy process was conducted to construct the users’ experience evaluation system, and three methods were used to reveal the influencing factors of the users’ experience in the Mulan River greenway, China. The connection between visual perception and environmental attributes was also identified. The results show that the site leveling, plant landscape aesthetics, and air quality are the main factors affecting user experience. The most significant factor influencing visual preference is the green view index. The green view index can promote visual preference within 60%. Various environmental features contribute to visual preference, providing quantitative support for enhancing landscape quality. This research reveals the factors of visual preference that contribute to forming scientific recommendations for the management and quality improvement of the Mulan River greenway. Full article

Research on capturing human mobility patterns for efficient and sustainable urban planning has been widely conducted. However, studies that unveil spatial context beyond macro-level mobility patterns are relatively scarce. This study aims to analyze the spatiotemporal human meta-mobility patterns with rich context using POI data in Seoul from comprehensive perspectives. As a result, the floating population of Seoul exhibits regular and irregular cyclical mobility patterns on weekdays and weekends, respectively, stemming from the periodicity of the dominant POIs. Additionally, graph construction based on mobility similarity and their regional clustering show clusters vary by POIs but are generally divided into peripheral and central regions of Seoul. This indicates that socioeconomic factors cannot be ignored when understanding human mobility patterns. This helps to provide scientific evidence to support policy recommendations towards greenways and sustainable urban mobility systems, such as quantitative disparity of greenways, qualitative issues of greenways in the central areas, and inequality in cultural consumption. Addressing key considerations through targeted policies could significantly improve the overall quality of life for urban residents. We expect this study to lay the groundwork for future research that aims to understand realistic human mobility patterns with a rich context. Full article

Understanding the spatial heterogeneity of bird community distribution within urban greenways is crucial for optimizing ecological functions and supporting urban biodiversity. While ecological corridors enhance connectivity and biodiversity, specific mechanisms by which landscape composition and configuration influence bird diversity remain unclear. This study examines bird community distribution along the Qingshan Lake Greenway in Hangzhou during autumn and winter, using 17 observation points across wetlands, forests, and mixed habitats. The key findings indicate that wetlands have significantly higher species richness compared to forests and mixed habitats, underscoring wetlands’ critical role in supporting diverse bird communities. Greenways primarily facilitate short-distance bird movement with limited permeability between habitats. Additionally, greenway effectiveness in enhancing bird diversity depends heavily on design and structural characteristics. This research highlights the necessity of incorporating microhabitat design and diverse habitat configurations in greenway planning to enhance ecological connectivity and biodiversity. It provides essential insights for urban planners and ecologists, emphasizing detailed landscape composition and configuration analyses. Future research should include year-round studies and advanced ecological monitoring technologies to validate and expand these findings, ultimately contributing to more effective urban biodiversity conservation and sustainable development strategies.
