Accurate prediction of ship underwater radiated noise (URN) during navigation is critical for evaluating acoustic stealth performance and analyzing detection risks. However, the labeled data available for the training of URN prediction model is limited. Semi-supervised learning (SSL) can improve the model performance by using unlabeled data in the case of a lack of labeled data. Therefore, this paper proposes an SSL method for URN prediction. First, an anti-perturbation regularization is constructed using unlabeled data to optimize the objective function of EL, which is then used in the Genetic algorithm to adaptively optimize base learner weights, to enhance pseudo-label quality. Second, a semi-supervised ensemble (ESS) framework integrating dynamic pseudo-label screening and uncertainty bias correction (UBC) is established, which can dynamically select pseudo-labels based on local prediction performance improvement and reduce the influence of pseudo-labels’ uncertainty on the model. Experimental results of the cabin model and sea trials of the ship demonstrate that the proposed method reduces prediction errors by up to 65.5% and 62.1% compared to baseline supervised and semi-supervised regression models, significantly improving prediction accuracy. This paper presents a 10 kW, 12-slot 10-pole surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) design with fractional-slot concentrated winding for a podded propulsion system. Its load is a propeller that is proportional to the square of the rotational speed and the fifth power of the propeller diameter. Taking this into account, three SPMSMs with rated rotational speeds of 600, 1200, and 1800 rpm with the same rated output power of 10 kW were analyzed. These were designed under the same conditions (i.e., torque per rotor volume, air-gap length, current density, power factor, fill-factor, and supply voltage). Based on the SPMSMs designed by electromagnetic analysis, the housing of a podded propulsor for each SPMSM was modeled for mechanical analysis, including such parameters as forced vibration, radiated noise, and modal acoustics analysis in air and water. From the modal acoustics analysis, it is confirmed that the natural frequencies of a structure in water are lower than those in air because of the added mass effect of water. Full article

Underwater radiated noise (URN) is greatly increasing due to an increase in commercial shipping, sonar activities, and climate change. As a result, marine life is having difficulty communicating, and marine ecosystem disturbances are occurring. The noise from the cavitation of propellers is affecting URN. Cavitation is a phenomenon in which rapid changes of pressure in a liquid lead to the formation of small vapor-filled cavities in places where the pressure is relatively low. This phenomenon results in poor efficiency of the propeller or turbine of a ship and noise, vibration, and erosion. For these reasons, this study examines the URN of sheet and cloud cavitation. A numerical analysis was done using a Delft Twist11 hydrofoil. The URN resulting from cloud cavitation and sheet cavitation was compared with the numerical results of previous studies. The results showed that URN normally increases due to pressure fluctuations when cavitation occurs. URN increased more significantly in conditions of cloud cavitation than in cavitation inception. It is also shown that a frequency begins to occur after the occurrence of the cloud cavitation, and the frequency grew as the cavitation fully developed. Full article

This study aims to demonstrate the merits of pressure-relieving holes at the tip region of propellers, which is introduced as “PressurePoresTM” technology as a retrofit on marine propellers to mitigate tip vortex cavitation noise for a quieter propeller. Shipping noise originates from various sources on board a vessel, amongst which the propeller cavitation is considered to dominate the overall radiated noise spectrum above the inception threshold. Thus, by strategically introducing pressure-relieving holes to modify the presence of cavitation, a reduction in the overall cavitation volume can be achieved. This mitigation technique could consequently result in a reduction of the radiated noise levels while maintaining the design efficiency as much as possible or with the least compromise. The strategic implementation of the holes was mainly aimed to reduce the tip vortex cavitation as this is one of the major contributors to the underwater noise emissions of a ship. In this paper, the details and results of a complementary numerical and experimental investigation is presented to further develop this mitigation concept for underwater radiated noise (URN) and to validate its effectiveness at model scale using a research vessel propeller. An overall finding from this study indicated that a significant reduction in cavitation noise could be achieved (up to 17 dB) at design speed with a favourable strategic arrangement of the pressure pores. Such a reduction was particularly evident in the frequency regions of utmost importance for marine fauna while the propeller lost only 2% of its efficiency. Full article
