In marine electric propulsion systems (MEPS) driven by variable-frequency drives, motor current signals often exhibit complex modulation components, ambiguous spectra, and severe noise interference, rendering it challenging to extract fault-related modulation components. To address this issue, we propose a zero-crossing tacholess order tracking method based on motor current signals. This method utilizes zero-crossing estimation of the instantaneous frequency to perform angular resampling of stator current signals and demodulates the envelope spectrum to extract fault characteristic spectra, enabling the diagnosis of mechanical faults in MEPS. Given the synchronization of the synchronous motor speed with the inverter fundamental frequency, this method estimates instantaneous frequencies in the time domain without requiring integration or time–frequency representation, which is simple and computationally efficient. Data validation on a small-scale marine electric propulsion test platform demonstrates that the proposed method exhibits good robustness under variable-speed conditions and effectively detects imbalance faults caused by propeller breakages and gear faults resulting from bevel gear tooth defects. Therefore, the proposed method can be applied to diagnose faults in downstream mechanical equipment driven by motors. Full article

Wind power is increasingly seen as a global, sustainable, and eco-friendly energy option. However, one significant obstacle to further wind energy investment is the high failure rate of wind turbines. The gearbox plays a pivotal role in turbine performance. In recent years, there has been a surge in the focus on gearbox fault diagnosis, reflecting its criticality and prevalence in the industry. Time synchronous averaging (TSA) is a primary technique to identify faults in wind turbine gearboxes using mechanical vibration signals. Generally, implementing TSA requires a device that is capable of recording the phase information of a rotary shaft. Nevertheless, there are situations in which the installation of such a device poses difficulties. For instance, gearboxes that are in use cannot be halted to allow for the installation of a device, and sealed gearboxes provide challenges while being inserted into the device. This research presents an innovative technical way to improve the TSA method without requiring a phase signal. The proposed method has the advantage of extracting the shaft rotation angle signal from the measured acceleration signal, even in non-stationary conditions where the rotational speed varies over time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through measured datasets from wind turbine gearboxes with actual faults and a dataset from a gear system with variable rotational speeds. Rotational speed measuring is important in order tracking under non-stational working conditions. However, sometimes, encoders or coded discs are not easy to mount due to the limited measurement environment. In this paper, a new in situ gravity acceleration decomposition method (GAD) is proposed for rotational speed estimation, and it is applied in the order tracking scene for fault diagnosis of a gearbox under non-stationary working conditions. In the proposed method, a MEMS accelerometer is locally embedded on the rotating shaft or disc in the tangential direction. The time-varying gravity acceleration component is sensed by the in situ accelerometer during the rotation of the shaft or disc. The GAD method is established to exploit the gravity acceleration component based on the linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) filter and complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) methods. Then, the phase signal of time-varying gravity acceleration is derived for rotational speed estimations. A motor–shaft–disc experimental setup is established to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison to a mounted encoder. The results show that both the estimated average and instantaneous rotational speed agree well with the mounted encoder. Furthermore, both the proposed GAD method and the traditional vibration-based tacholess speed estimation methods are applied in the context of order tracking for fault diagnosis of a gearbox. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in the detection of tooth spalling faults under non-stationary working conditions. Full article

In this article, we propose to determine the dynamic model of a squirrel-cage induction motor from a reduced amount of information. An adaptive observer is also built from this model in order to obtain a speed estimation and to perform rotor fault monitoring by Tacholess Order Tracking (TOT). We also propose a generalization of the notion of angular sampling in order to adapt to this type of defect. The procedure is validated in the laboratory on a test bench dedicated to the study of rotor bar defects. Full article

This article deals with the detection of mechanical faults in synchronous machines from single current measurement at variable speed. The proposed approach is based on an order tracking method in which the analysis signal is sampled as a function of the mechanical angle. In this case, the spectral components become independent of the speed and the frequency analysis can be exploited. Order tracking is generally implemented from a position measurement. In this work we present a method that allows us to estimate this position and the analysis signal from only one current measurement. The proposed approach allows an intuitive adjustment of the algorithm parameters. Secondly, a statistical method is used to finalize the diagnosis. At variable speed, this type of method is difficult to implement and we show that order tracking makes it possible to simplify the analysis. The procedure is tested in simulation and on a experimental test bench. Full article

Order tracking has been widely used to diagnose failures of variable speed rotating machines. The performance of the TOT (Time-Frequency Domain Tacholess Order Tracking) methods is based on the correct separation of the target component strictly related to the shaft rotation frequency. Currently, most of the methods have focused on obtaining the instantaneous frequency with accuracy. In this paper, a new TOT method has been proposed that combines the inverse short-time Fourier transform (ISTFT) with singular value decomposition (SVD). The target component closely related to the shaft rotation frequency is selected and filtered approximately in the time-frequency domain. Hence, the ISTFT is adopted to reverse the target component into the time domain. Next, SVD is used to refine the roughly filtered target component. Finally, the phase of the refined signal is extracted to resample the original signal. The performance of the method was tested using real vibration signals collected from a large-scale test rig of a high-speed train traction system. Full article

This article presents a mechanical fault diagnosis methodology in synchronous machines using only a single current measurement in variable speed conditions. The proposed methodology uses order tracking in order to sample the analysis signal as a function of the rotor angle. The spectrum of the signal is then independent of speed and it could be employed in frequency analysis. Order tracking is usually applied using rotor position measurement. In this work, the proposed method uses one current measurement to estimate the position as well as the analysis signal (rotation speed). Furthermore, a statistical approach is used to create a complete diagnosis protocol. At variable speed and with only one current measurement the diagnosis is challenging. However, order tracking will allow simpler analysis. The method is proved in simulations and experimental set-up. Full article

Vibration analysis is an effective tool for the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings. Conventional diagnostic methods are based on the stationary assumption, thus they are not applicable to the diagnosis of bearings working under varying speed. This constraint limits the bearing diagnosis to the industrial application significantly. In order to extend the conventional diagnostic methods to speed variation cases, a tacholess envelope order analysis technique is proposed in this paper. In the proposed technique, a tacholess order tracking (TLOT) method is first introduced to extract the tachometer information from the vibration signal itself. On this basis, an envelope order spectrum (EOS) is utilized to recover the bearing characteristic frequencies in the order domain. By combining the advantages of TLOT and EOS, the proposed technique is capable of detecting bearing faults under varying speeds, even without the use of a tachometer. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by both simulated signals and real vibration signals collected from locomotive roller bearings with faults on inner race, outer race and rollers, respectively. Analyzed results show that the proposed method could identify different bearing faults effectively and accurately under speed varying conditions. Full article
