Sexual health constitutes a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, with direct implications for individual development and the broader social and economic progress of communities. Promoting environments that ensure sexual experiences free from coercion, discrimination, and violence is a key public health priority. Sexuality, in this regard, should be understood as an inherent dimension of human experience, shaped by biological, cultural, cognitive, and ideological factors. Accordingly, sexual health education requires a holistic and multidimensional approach that integrates sociocultural, biographical, and professional perspectives. This study aims to examine the level of knowledge and training in sexual health among nursing students and healthcare professionals, as well as to assess the extent to which sexual health content is incorporated into nursing curricula at Spanish universities. A scoping review was conducted using the Dialectical Structural Model of Care (DSMC) as the theoretical framework. The findings indicate a significant lack of knowledge regarding sexual health among both nursing students and healthcare professionals, largely due to educational and structural limitations. Furthermore, sexual health education remains underrepresented in nursing curricula and is frequently addressed from a narrow, fragmented biomedical perspective. These results highlight the urgent need for the comprehensive integration of sexual health content into nursing education. Strengthening curricular inclusion is essential to ensure the preparation of competent professionals capable of delivering holistic, inclusive, and empowering care in this critical area of health. This study examines how Ontario’s Health and Physical Education curriculum addresses the needs of young adults with disabilities. A total of 54 individuals aged 18–35 years old with developmental, learning, or physical disabilities who had completed secondary school in Ontario participated in a cross-sectional mixed-methods survey. Participants were recruited through disability-focused community networks and a university psychology participant pool. They completed the Sex Education subscale of the Sexual Knowledge, Experience, Feelings and Needs Scale, a 35-item sexual knowledge questionnaire, and open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests; qualitative responses were examined using thematic analysis. Participants reported limited factual knowledge, minimal classroom representation, and heavy reliance on independent learning. Barriers included inaccessible materials, teacher discomfort, and the absence of disability narratives in sexuality units. Findings point to three priorities: revising curriculum content, expanding educator training, and creating disability-affirming resources. These measures will help ensure comprehensive and rights-based sexuality education that supports the autonomy and well-being of students with disabilities. Full article

Introduction: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs), especially those from underserved communities, often face barriers to sexual and reproductive health (SRH). This pilot study evaluated the implementation of mobile health technologies to promote SRH care, including the integration of the Rapid Adolescent Prevention ScreeningTM (RAAPS) and the Health-E You/Salud iTuTM (Health-E You) app at a School-Based Health Center (SBHC) in Los Angeles using the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) framework. Methods: This multi-method pilot study included the implementation of an integrated tool with two components, the RAAPS electronic health screening tool and the Health-E You app, which delivers tailored SRH education and contraceptive decision support to patients (who were sex-assigned as female at birth) and provides an electronic summary to clinicians to better prepare them for the visit with their patient. Quantitative data on tool usage were collected directly from the back-end data storage for the apps, and qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and in-clinic observations. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify implementation barriers and facilitators. Results: Between April 2024 and June 2024, 60 unique patients (14–19 years of age) had a healthcare visit. Of these, 35.00% used the integrated RAAPS/Health-E You app, and 88.33% completed the Health-E You app only. All five clinic staff were interviewed and expressed that they valued the tools for their educational impact, noting that they enhanced SRH discussions and helped uncover sensitive information that students might not disclose face-to-face. However, the tools affected clinic workflows and caused rooming delays due to the time-intensive setup process and lack of integration with the clinic’s primary electronic medical record system. In addition, they also reported that the time to complete the screener and app within the context of a 30-min appointment limited the time available for direct patient care. Additionally, staff reported that some students struggled with the two-step process and did not complete all components of the tool. Despite these challenges, clinic staff strongly supported renewing the RAAPS license and continued use of the Health-E You app, emphasizing the platform’s potential for improving SRH care and its educational value. Conclusions: The integrated RAAPS and Health-E You app platform demonstrated educational value and improved SRH care but faced operational and technical barriers in implementing the tool. These findings emphasize the potential of such tools to address SRH disparities among vulnerable AYAs while providing a framework for future implementations in SBHCs. Full article

Gender harassment is the most common variant of sexual harassment and is often seen in male-dominated workplaces. Importantly, persistent gender harassment produces pronounced impairment in psychological and occupational domains. The current study aimed to examine the degree to which male dominated academic degree programs are associated with higher rates of sexual harassment compared to female dominated programs. Four academic fields were chosen for their gender disparity—business, engineering, health sciences, and education. Consistent with hypotheses, cisgender women students in the college of engineering were most likely to experience gender harassment by peers and faculty. This article presents a structured review of literature published between 2015 and 2025 on the experiences of rural LGBTQIA+ youth. Using targeted search terms—including “LGBT*,” “rural,” “country,” “young people,” “sexual and gender minority (SGM),” “small town,” “youth,” and “students”—a research team identified 26 peer-reviewed articles that met inclusion criteria. Through team-based thematic analysis, six core themes emerged: (1) gaps in intersectional analysis, (2) mental health outcomes, (3) culturally responsive services and resources, (4) community climate and context, (5) experiences of victimization, and (6) policy. Across these themes, the review highlights the resilience, agency, and strength of LGBTQIA+ youth navigating rural environments. The literature consistently demonstrates how experiences of victimization are closely linked to mental health outcomes, while access to social support—particularly from affirming adults in systems (such as schools)—can mitigate harm and foster well-being. Implications for social work research, practice, and policy are discussed, with an emphasis on supporting LGBTQIA+ youth in U.S. Southern rural settings. Full article

Background: Suicidal ideation among adolescents remains a major public health challenge. Exposure to neighborhood violence is associated with increased risk of mental health distress and school-related vulnerabilities. This study investigates the predictors of suicidal ideation among U.S. adolescents who have witnessed neighborhood violence. Methods: Data were drawn from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), a nationally representative survey of high school students in the United States. A subsample of 3495 adolescents who reported witnessing neighborhood violence was analyzed. Key variables included sociodemographic characteristics, mental health symptoms, perceived school safety, and experiences of victimization. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with suicidal ideation, defined as seriously considering suicide in the past year. Analyses were conducted using Jamovi (version 2.6), with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: The prevalence of suicidal ideation in the sample was 34.2%. Bisexual adolescents had significantly higher odds of suicidal ideation compared to heterosexual peers (OR = 2.34, p < 0.001). Depressive symptoms were the strongest predictor (OR = 7.51, p < 0.001). Both perceived lack of safety at school and differences in ethnic and population backgrounds were significant. Black and Hispanic/Latino adolescents had lower odds compared to White peers. Conclusions: Findings highlight sexual identity, depressive symptoms, school safety concerns, and ethnic and population background differences as key correlates of suicidal ideation. Culturally responsive, trauma-informed interventions are urgently needed for youth exposed to community violence. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted higher education worldwide, imposing strict isolation measures, transitioning learning online, and exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities. This literature review examines the pandemic’s impact on the mental health of college students, with a focus on those belonging to minority groups, including racial, ethnic, migrant, gender, sexuality-based, and low-income populations. While elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness were observed across all students, findings indicate that LGBTQ+ and low-income students faced the highest levels of psychological distress, due to compounded stressors such as family rejection, unsafe home environments, and financial insecurity. Racial and ethnic minority students reported increased experiences of discrimination and reduced access to culturally competent mental healthcare. International and migrant students were disproportionately affected by travel restrictions, legal uncertainties, and social disconnection. These disparities underscore the need for higher education institutions to implement targeted, inclusive mental health policies that account for the unique needs of at-risk student populations during health crises. Background/Objectives: Sexual attitudes, particularly those on the erotophilia (positive openness) to erotophobia (negative fear) scales, play a critical role in shaping behaviors and health decisions. While associations between sexual behavior and substance use have been documented, limited research has explored how sexual attitudes relate to mental health and substance use among Latin American university populations. This study aimed to examine the associations among erotophilic attitudes, mental health symptoms (anxiety and depression), substance use risk, and sexual behaviors in Mexican university students. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between 2019 and 2023 with 1475 undergraduate students aged 17–25 years. Participants completed the Revised Sexual Opinion Survey (R-SOS) to assess sexual attitudes, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) for mental health evaluation, and adapted items from the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) to measure substance use risk. Erotophilic attitudes were defined as R-SOS scores ≥ 70. Statistical tests included the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for normality, t-tests or Mann–Whitney U tests for group comparisons, Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables, and Spearman’s correlations. Multivariate binary logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (AdORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Erotophilic students were more likely to be male, older, initiate sexual activity earlier, and report a greater number of sexual partners. Erotophilia was positively associated with anxiety and tobacco, alcohol and marijuana use, and negatively associated with depressive symptoms. Multivariate analysis indicated that erotophilia was independently associated with male sex, age ≥ 20, higher anxiety, lower depression, low socioeconomic status, and increased risk of tobacco and marijuana use. Lower rates of consistent condom use were also reported among erotophilic individuals. Conclusions: Erotophilia may serve as a behavioral risk marker linked to anxiety symptoms and increased substance use, but not to depression. These findings highlight the need for integrated interventions addressing sexual health, substance use, and mental well-being in university populations. Full article

University students from diverse sexual orientations encounter specific mental health challenges due to academic demands, minority stress, and societal stigma; however, research focusing on these issues is still scarce in Southeast Asia. This research aimed to examine the mental health outcomes of heterosexual and sexuality-diverse students in Thailand, concentrating on both negative aspects—such as depression, anxiety, and perceived stress—and positive aspects—like resilience, inner strength, and perceived social support. A cross-sectional survey was performed with 442 university students aged between 20 and 30, employing validated self-report instruments. Statistical methods, including t-tests and multiple regression analyses, were used to evaluate differences and relationships between sexual orientation and mental health outcomes while controlling for confounding variables. The findings revealed that sexuality-diverse students showed notably higher levels of depression (B = 0.115, p < 0.05) and lower perceived social support (B = −0.10, p < 0.05) when compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences found in anxiety, perceived stress, resilience, or inner strength. Perceived social support proved to be a crucial protective factor, with greater levels linked to reduced depression, anxiety, and perceived stress (p < 0.01). These results underscore the necessity for inclusive university policies, specific mental health interventions, and peer and family support initiatives to enhance the well-being of sexuality-diverse students in Thailand. Coverage of HPV Vaccination and Influencing Factors Among Female College Students in Northern China

Background: Despite the significant global disease burden associated with HPV infection, the vaccination coverage among female college students in China remains suboptimal. This study aimed to examine HPV vaccination coverage, knowledge levels, and determinants influencing vaccination behavior among female college students in northern China, utilizing the Health Belief Model (HBM) as a theoretical framework. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from December 2024 to January 2025, involving 4076 female students from six universities in Jinan, China. The participants were categorized into three groups: vaccinated (VG), willing-to-vaccinate (WTG), and unwilling-to-vaccinate (UTG). Data on sociodemographic characteristics, HPV knowledge, health beliefs, and vaccination behavior were analyzed using ANOVA, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multivariate logistic regression. Results: The vaccination rate was 18.11%, with 40.19% expressing willingness to vaccinate and 41.71% expressing unwillingness. Vaccinated students demonstrated higher levels of HPV knowledge (6.66 ± 2.67 compared to 4.76 ± 3.10 in the UTG, p < 0.001) and were predominantly from urban areas (OR = 0.64, p < 0.001). The key determinants of vaccination uptake included perceived benefits (OR = 1.54, p < 0.001), perceived barriers (OR = 3.34, p < 0.001), self-decision-making ability (OR = 1.80, p < 0.001), and social motivation (OR = 0.21, p < 0.001). Notably, increased knowledge was associated with vaccine hesitancy in the WTG group (OR = 0.45, p < 0.001), indicating that information overload may adversely affect decision-making processes. Structural barriers, such as cost (42.63%), safety concerns (46.59%), and misconceptions (e.g., 57.76% cited “no sexual activity” as a reason for refusal), significantly impeded vaccine uptake. Conclusions: The low coverage of HPV vaccination is indicative of deficiencies in knowledge, socioeconomic disparities, and cultural perceptions. Tailored interventions should focus on educational efforts to correct misconceptions, provide subsidized access to vaccines, and implement empowerment strategies that enhance self-efficacy and informed decision-making. Policymakers should incorporate these findings into national cervical cancer prevention programs to address the gap between vaccination intention and behavior among young women in China. Full article

Introduction: Sexual and reproductive health is a critical aspect of medical education, yet significant knowledge gaps persist even among future healthcare professionals. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes of Romanian medical students regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and contraceptive practices. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 510 undergraduate medical students, using a validated 30-item online questionnaire assessing socio-demographic data, sexual behaviors, STI knowledge, and attitudes towards sexual health. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and Spearman correlation tests were used to analyze the data. Results: Participants demonstrated a good understanding of common STI pathogens and transmission routes, with 99.02% identifying unprotected vaginal intercourse as a risk factor. However, only 58.82% correctly identified Chlamydia trachomatis, and awareness of less common pathogens remained low. Long-term complications such as infertility (85.29%) and cervical cancer (87.25%) were well recognized, although misconceptions about STI severity persisted, with over 40% believing that STIs are not dangerous because they are treatable. Male students reported earlier sexual debut and more frequent high-risk behaviors, while females were more likely to consult specialist doctors and receive HPV vaccination. The level of knowledge correlated positively with parental education and faculty program. Conclusions: Despite generally high awareness of STI-related topics, considerable gaps and misconceptions persist among Romanian medical students. These findings highlight the need for comprehensive, structured sexual health education integrated into medical curricula to ensure future healthcare providers are well-equipped to promote public health. Background/Objectives: Care-oriented perspectives in the LGBTIQ+ community are essential to ensure adequate and comprehensive health care. This population faces multiple barriers imposed by society, including discrimination in access to healthcare services. This research aims to analyse the perspective of nursing students in relation to the provision of care for people with sexual and gender diversity. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological research-action study was conducted. Data were collected using a semi-structured face-to-face interview consisting of 23 questions. The interviews were transcribed, read thoroughly and analysed. Results: Forty students were interviewed, and four main themes emerged: (1) personal perspective, (2) professional and disciplinary training, (3) nursing education and (4) health implications. The results show that students have mixed perspectives and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ populations, although they are interested in receiving more LGBTQ-focused training. Furthermore, respondents reported that the training received in the degree course and the preparation of lecturers in relation to caring for LGBTQ+ people are lacking. Finally, it emerged that inequalities in access to health services can still be observed and that there is a need for the development of manuals that are at the forefront of comprehensive health in this population. Conclusions: Based on the results, the implementation of Madeleine Leininger’s Sunrise model is suggested. Acceptance of sexual and gender diversity is essential to ensure the elimination of inequalities and make care a transformative process. Finally, education on these aspects needs to be implemented by including activities such as practical training scenarios, workshops and conferences to highlight the specific needs of the LGBTIQ+ population. Adolescents’ health risk behavior may have a longstanding impact on their later adult life and health. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to report on health risk behaviors and sexual attitudes in a sample of Mongolian adolescents (N = 312) in light of their levels of social support and well-being. Measurements were derived from the Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC), including substance use and sexual behavior, whereas social support from parents and peers was measured with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Student well-being was evaluated using the WHO Well-Being Questionnaire (WBI-5). The frequency of current smokers was 13.1% (boys: 18.9%, girls: 10.2%; χ2 = 4.61, Phi = −0.12, p = 0.032). The prevalence rate of current alcohol consumption was 11.2% (boys: 14.2%, girls: 9.7%; χ2 = 1.38, Phi = −0.07, p > 0.05), similar to the nationwide results. The percentage of students who have ever had sexual intercourse was 6.4 (12.4% of boys and 3.4% of girls, χ2 = 9.33, Phi = 0.17, p = 0.006), similar to Central Asian countries included in the HBSC survey. Boys were more likely to associate sexual activity with self-esteem, intimacy with a partner, and positive perceptions among peers. Conversely, girls expressed greater concern about the negative consequences of sexual activity, such as STDs and pregnancy. Social support from the family played a protective role in frequencies of smoking and drinking. However, levels of the social support subscales did not differ by the students’ relationship status or previous sexual intercourse. These results suggest that there is a need for a complex prevention program to avoid increases in Mongolian adolescents’ smoking and drinking and promote their healthy sexual attitudes and behavior. Risk Factors and Prevalence of Suicide in Chilean University Students

Mental health among higher education students is a growing public health concern in Chile, where 58 universities host a diverse student population facing significant academic and emotional challenges. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of suicidal risk, ideation, and attempts, as well as associated risk factors in Chilean university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1511 participants (72.3% women, 27.7% men; mean age = 25.7 ± 7.82 years), using a digital self-administered questionnaire that included the Okasha’s Suicidality Scale (OSS), Depression, the Anxiety, and Stress Scale—21 items (DASS-21), the Emotional Exhaustion Scale (ECE), and sociodemographic variables. Logistic regression identified key factors associated with suicide attempts, such as being female (OR = 1.418, 95% CI [1.037, 1.939]), belonging to sexual minorities (OR = 2.539, 95% CI [1.899, 3.396]), being aged 26–30 (OR = 1.952, 95% CI [1.344, 2.836]), and being in the third year of university (OR = 1.483, 95% CI [1.097, 2.005]). Depression (OR = 7.065, 95% CI [5.307, 9.407]) and anxiety (OR = 1.895, 95% CI [1.400, 2.565]) were the strongest predictors, while substance use, including marijuana (OR = 2.107, 95% CI [1.620, 2.740]), cocaine (OR = 1.575, 95% CI [1.193, 2.078]), and non-prescribed antidepressants (OR = 6.383, 95% CI [1.524, 26.733]), significantly increased risk. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted mental health interventions and policy actions in Chilean higher education to address post-pandemic increases in suicide-related behaviors. The Impact of a Structured Contraceptive Counseling Program on Reproductive Health Knowledge, Sexual Autonomy, and Mental Well-Being Among Romanian College Women

Background and Objectives: Contraceptive education may influence reproductive health outcomes, foster greater sexual autonomy, and improve mental well-being. The current study investigated the efficacy of a structured contraceptive counseling program on reproductive health knowledge, sexual autonomy, anxiety, and depressive symptoms among Romanian college women. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted during the 2021–2024 academic years, enrolling 240 female students aged 18–26 from the “Victor Babes” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timisoara. The participants were divided into two arms: (1) Intervention Group (IG, n = 115), which was provided counseling materials, and (2) Control Group (CG, n = 116), which received no additional counseling. Baseline and post-intervention data were collected using a contraceptive knowledge quiz (CKQ), a sexual autonomy scale (SAS), the WHOQOL-BREF, GAD-7, and PHQ-9. Results: After the 12-week intervention, the IG demonstrated significant improvements in contraceptive knowledge (mean CKQ score: 25.5 ± 3.1 vs. 20.1 ± 4.3 in CG, p < 0.001), sexual autonomy (SAS: 82.6 ± 9.2 vs. 75.7 ± 10.1, p < 0.001), and psychological well-being indicators: lower anxiety (GAD-7: 3.1 ± 2.0 vs. 5.2 ± 2.3, p < 0.001) and depression scores (PHQ-9: 4.8 ± 2.0 vs. 7.1 ± 2.2, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that membership in the IG was the most significant predictor of improved post-intervention contraceptive knowledge and reduced mental distress, even after adjusting for confounders such as age, socioeconomic status, and relationship status. Conclusions: A structured contraceptive counseling program can significantly enhance reproductive health knowledge, strengthen sexual autonomy, and reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms among Romanian college women. The findings emphasize the importance of developing systematic, multi-faceted interventions for improving students’ reproductive well-being and mental health outcomes within university settings.
