This article presents a study that applies Laban’s Effort theory to detect a musician’s expressive intentions during performance. Laban Effort theory was chosen for its capacity to support the observation, description, and interpretation of expressive movement. The aim was to develop interactive musical systems that learn from the embodied expressivity musicians cultivate through practice. The study adopts a multidisciplinary approach, combining Laban Motion Analysis with interactive machine learning. Gesture data, audio, and video were recorded during a performance of Brahms’s Clarinet Sonata Op. 120 No. 2. The video was then analysed by an expert annotator observing Laban Efforts. The annotated video was then reviewed in collaboration with the performer to incorporate Effort Phrasing that reflects changes in intensity within Efforts. The annotations were then used as training data, together with motion data recorded during the performance, to train a regression model. The model was evaluated against expert annotations and through qualitative video analysis. Unlike the very linear notation of a Laban analyst, the model reflects the dynamism of human motion by capturing the almost humanly unobservable nuances in Effort variations. This points to the possibility of using machine learning models to reflect a performer’s expressive intentions in real-time. Full article

Security measures are essential in the automotive industry to detect intrusions in-vehicle networks. However, developing a one-size-fits-all intrusion detection system (IDS) is challenging because each vehicle has a unique data profile. This is due to the complex and dynamic nature of the data generated by vehicles regarding their model, driving style, test environment, and firmware update. To address this issue, a universal IDS has been developed that can be applied to all types of vehicles without the need for customization. Unlike conventional IDSs, the universal IDS can adapt to data distribution shifts caused by changes in driving style, vehicle platform, or firmware updates. In this study, a new hybrid approach has been developed, combining Pearson correlation with deep learning techniques. This approach has been tested using data obtained from four distinct mechanical and electronic vehicles, including Tesla, Sonata, and two Kia models. The data has been combined into two frequency datasets, and wavelet transformation has been employed to convert them into the frequency domain, enhancing generalizability. Additionally, a statistical method based on independent rule-based systems using Pearson correlation has been utilized to improve system performance. The system has been compared with eight different IDSs, three of which utilize the universal approach, while the remaining five are based on conventional techniques. The accuracy of each system has been evaluated through benchmarking, and the results demonstrate that the hybrid system effectively detects intrusions in various vehicle models. Full article

Background: Transcervical radiofrequency ablation (TRFA), particularly using the SONATA® System, is a minimally invasive and uterus-preserving treatment for uterine fibroids. While effective, its reliance on intrauterine ultrasound (IUS) with limited 2D visualization can present challenges, especially for trainees who must mentally reconstruct 3D anatomy in real-time from traditional radiology reports. Objective: This study explores the benefits of using 3D Smart MRI technology in improving procedural accuracy and user experience during simulated TRFA procedures performed by OB/GYN residents. Methods: In a randomized human subject study, 14 OB/GYN residents performed mock TRFA procedures on silicone uterine phantom models embedded with fibroids. The control group received standard written MRI reports, while the intervention group used the Smart MRI 3D visualization tool. We assessed quantitative outcomes including procedure time and fibroid miss rate. Additionally, participants completed post-procedure user experience questionnaires to assess the perceived utility and ease of use of the 3D tool. Results: While procedure time did not differ significantly between groups, there was a notable reduction in the miss rate for one of the fibroids (17% vs. 75%). Residents using Smart MRI reported higher confidence in identifying and treating all fibroids (83% vs. 43%) and rated their spatial understanding significantly higher on Likert-scale assessments (4.6 vs. 3.25). The technology also received high scores for its impact on clinical decision-making (4.8) and intraoperative efficiency (4.5). Conclusions: Overall, this study indicated that the use of 3D Smart MRI was well-received by residents, who reported enhanced intraoperative performance, including greater confidence, more informed decision-making, and improved procedural efficiency. Moreover, the notably lower miss rate observed in the Smart MRI group points to the tool’s potential in improving the detection and treatment of fibroids that may be missed otherwise. Full article

Background: Uterine fibroids are benign monoclonal neoplasms of the myometrium, representing the most common female pelvic neoplasms globally. Treatments may be invasive, such as hysterectomy and myomectomy, non-invasive, such as medical therapy or focused ultrasound, or minimally invasive, such as transcervical radiofrequency ablation (TFA). To date, more than 12,000 women have been treated worldwide using TFA with the Sonata® System. Case Presentation: We present the first case report of TFA on a presumptive fibroid that was initially reclassified as a STUMP (smooth muscle tumor of uncertain malignant potential) and, after additional surgical treatment, leiomyosarcoma. Conclusion: This case highlights that, while uterine sarcoma is rare, inadvertent treatment may still result due to a lack of reliable diagnostic modalities. Nonetheless, TFA with the Sonata System represents a minimally invasive option that might not alter the prognosis of an undiagnosed uterine sarcoma as this treatment is not intraperitoneal and does not resect/morcellate tissue. Transcervical Fibroid Ablation (TFA): Update on Pregnancy Outcomes

Background/Objectives: Transcervical fibroid ablation (TFA) is an incisionless method to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids. While safety regarding future pregnancy remains to be established, TFA does not preclude the possibility of pregnancy, and a previous 36-patient case series of post-TFA pregnancies reported normal outcomes. That prior series did not include postmarket cases in the United States, as the Sonata® System was initially cleared and used in Europe. This is a substantive update of known pregnancies with the Sonata System since June 2011, and includes pregnancies in Europe, Mexico, and the US. Methods: TFA was carried out under both clinical trial and postmarket use to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids. All post-TFA pregnancies reported by physicians with their patient’s consent were included. Results: 89 pregnancies and 55 deliveries have occurred among 72 women treated with the Sonata System. This includes 8 women who conceived more than once after TFA. Completed pregnancies (n = 62 women) include 19 vaginal deliveries, 35 Cesarean sections, 5 therapeutic abortions, 1 ectopic pregnancy, and 1 delivery by an unknown route. Ten pregnancies are ongoing. Mean birthweight was 3276.7 ± 587.3 g. Ten women experienced 18 first-trimester spontaneous abortions (SAbs), with 10 of the 18 SAbs (55.6%) occurring between two patients with a history of recurrent abortion. The SAb rate was 22.8%, inclusive of these two patients, and 10.1% if they were excluded as outliers. There were no instances of uterine rupture, placenta accreta spectrum, or stillbirth. Conclusions: This case series, the largest to date for any hyperthermic ablation modality, suggests that TFA with the Sonata System could be a feasible, safe treatment option regarding eventual pregnancy in women with symptomatic uterine fibroids. The Bioactivities and Chemical Profile of Turnip-Rooted Parsley Germplasm

In the present study, the chemical profile and bioactive properties of the roots of turnip-rooted parsley (Petroselinum crispum spp. tuberosum) germplasm were evaluated. For this purpose, plants from seventeen parsley cultivars were grown in 6 L pots, and the obtained roots were analyzed in terms of nutritional value, chemical composition (tocopherols, sugars and organic and fatty acids) and bioactive content (antioxidant activity, phenolic compound composition and antimicrobial properties). Our results showed great variability in terms of the chemical composition and bioactive properties of root parsley germplasm. A higher fresh root yield was recorded for the common “Root parsley” common variety (164 g/pot), followed by the varieties “Osborne” (109 g/pot), “Sonata” (104 g/pot), “Kaśka” (104 g/pot) and “Halblange Berlinska” (103 g/pot), whereas the lowest yield was recorded for the “Hanacka” variety (69 g/pot). A significant variation was also observed in the nutritional value parameters: the roots of the “Sonata” genotype showed the highest fat content; “Arat”, “Osborne” and “Olomuńcka” had the highest ash content; the “Alba” cultivar contained significantly higher amounts of carbohydrates; and the “Vistula” cultivar showed the highest energetic value. The only detected isoforms of vitamin E were α- and δ-tocopherols; content varied depending on the cultivar, although α-tocopherol was the most abundant compound in most cultivars, especially in the “Arat” cultivar. Sucrose was the most abundant free sugar detected, especially in the “Sonata” cultivar (16.96 g/100 g dw), followed by apiose (2.93–5.55 g/100 g dw), glucose (1.3–3.47 g/100 g dw) and fructose (1.37–3.03 g/100 g dw). Moreover, malic acid was the most abundant organic acid in most of the tested cultivars. Twenty-one individual fatty acids were identified in all the studied cultivars, with linoleic (47.9–57.1%) and palmitic acid (20.66–20.5%) being the most abundant. Nineteen individual phenolic compounds were tentatively identified, including three phenolic acids, fourteen flavonoids and two hydrolyzable tannins, while apigenin-O-pentoside-O-hexoside was the most abundant. The antioxidant activity differed between the tested assays (TBARS and OxHLIA), and the most effective cultivars for the TBARS assay (“Root parsley (common variety)” and “Berlinski Halblange Springer”) were those with the lowest antioxidant activity for the OxHLIA assay after 120 min. Finally, in most cases, the root extracts were more efficient or similarly effective compared to the positive controls against the tested bacteria and fungi. In conclusion, our results provide information regarding the chemical characterization and the bioactivities of the roots of turnip-rooted parsley germplasm that could be further exploited in sustainable and diversified agro-ecosystems through the introduction of this species as a novel/complementary crop in the traditional farming systems of the Mediterranean basin.
