Impact of Structural Empowerment, Thriving at Work, and Caregiver Reciprocity on the Psychological Empowerment of Home Care Workers in South Korea

Objective: Given the critical workforce challenges in home care settings and the limited understanding of empowerment mechanisms in isolated work environments, this study aimed to examine how structural empowerment influences psychological empowerment among home care workers in South Korea through the mediating pathways of thriving at work and caregiver reciprocity. Based on Kanter’s empowerment theory, we specifically investigated the serial mediation effects to understand the complex processes through which organizational support structures translate into enhanced worker empowerment. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 192 home care workers. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and serial multiple mediation analysis using SPSS Process Macro Model 6. Results: Structural empowerment demonstrated significant positive correlations with thriving at work (r = 0.445, p < 0.001), caregiver reciprocity (r = 0.490, p < 0.001), and psychological empowerment (r = 0.337, p < 0.001). Thriving at work significantly influenced both caregiver reciprocity (β = 0.3968, p < 0.001) and psychological empowerment (β = 0.1685, p < 0.001). The serial mediation analysis revealed that the indirect effect of structural empowerment on psychological empowerment through thriving at work and caregiver reciprocity was statistically significant (indirect effect = 0.1327, 95% CI [0.0713, 0.1929]), with the model explaining 58% of the variance in psychological empowerment. Conclusions: Structural empowerment significantly enhances psychological empowerment among home care workers through the sequential mediation of thriving at work and caregiver reciprocity. Healthcare organizations should prioritize strengthening structural empowerment through comprehensive support systems and conducive work environments to optimize care quality and worker well-being. Background: The mechanisms through which information and communication technology (ICT) use influences chronic disease self-management remain unclear. Method: This cross-sectional investigation examined the mediating effects of health literacy, social support, and self-efficacy on the association between ICT use and self-management behaviors among older adults (≥60 years) with comorbidities in China (n = 520). The participants were recruited from a tertiary hospital in Shanghai (July 2023–June 2024), and data on sociodemographics, self-management, health literacy, social support, self-efficacy, and ICT use were collected via structured questionnaires. Results: Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed a significant association between ICT use, health literacy, social support, self-efficacy, and chronic disease self-management (p < 0.001). Multiple mediation modeling revealed a direct positive effect of ICT use on self-management (b = 1.3314, 95% CI = 0.6629, 2.0002). Furthermore, significant indirect effects were observed, mediated independently by both health literacy and social support. Additional serial mediation pathways included health literacy → social support, health literacy → self-efficacy, social support → self-efficacy, and a comprehensive pathway from health literacy through social support to self-efficacy. Conclusions: These findings collectively indicate that ICT use directly enhances chronic disease self-management among older adults with comorbidities. Moreover, ICT use indirectly improves self-management by enhancing health literacy, augmenting social support, and bolstering self-efficacy. Full article

Background/Objectives: Self-compassion, characterized by treating oneself with kindness during challenges, has been shown to alleviate anxiety and fear of recurrence in cancer patients by mitigating negative emotions such as depression and fatigue. Psychological flexibility and coping strategies have emerged as potential mediators in the relationship between self-compassion and emotional well-being, suggesting that these factors play a critical role in managing distress in cancer patients. However, further research is needed to clarify the mechanisms through which self-compassion, psychological flexibility, and coping interact to influence fear of recurrence and anxiety in cancer populations. Methods: Two hundred and ninety-six women who had completed cancer treatment completed self-report assessments of self-compassion, psychological flexibility, coping, fear of recurrence, and generalized anxiety. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to test a multiple-mediation model, including serial and parallel pathways among the study variables. Results: Self-compassion was positively associated with psychological flexibility and coping strategies, and negatively associated with fear of recurrence and generalized anxiety. Path analysis identified significant serial and parallel mediation effects, where both positive and negative self-compassion were associated with lower fear of recurrence and generalized anxiety through pathways involving psychological flexibility and emotion- and meaning-focused coping. The findings highlight the protective role of self-compassion in reducing psychological distress, suggesting that enhancing self-compassion may improve emotional adjustment in cancer patients. Conclusions: Attitudes based on self-kindness and a nonjudgmental approach have significant potential in reducing fear of cancer recurrence and generalized anxiety in female cancer patients, emphasizing the mediating role of psychological flexibility and coping strategies. According to the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) model, these relationships highlight the important roles of personal resources and coping mechanisms in alleviating negative emotional states in women with cancer. Interventions focused on self-compassion and psychological flexibility could provide valuable support in coping with the emotional suffering associated with cancer. Full article

Objective: The present investigation sought to examine the interrelationships between early-life adverse experiences, dissociative symptoms, suicidal ideation, and depressive manifestations among metropolitan firefighters screened with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to elucidate the potential mediating effects of these psychological variables on both the presence and severity of PTSD symptomatology in this high-risk occupational cohort. Methods: A cross-sectional investigation was performed to assess psychological conditions among 760 metropolitan male firefighters, employing conditional process analysis with multiple mediation modeling (PROCESS macro Model 6). The investigative protocol employed validated psychometric instruments including the PTSD Checklist (PCL-5); the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-33); the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES); the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire (SBQ-4); and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Bootstrap resampling (n = 5000) generated bias-corrected 95% confidence intervals, enabling interrogation of complex trauma response mechanisms. Results: Conditional process analysis demonstrated that childhood trauma functions as a significant mediator (indirect effect = 0.142, 95% CI [0.086, 0.198]), with emotional abuse pathways revealing significant mediational effects (β = 0.285, p < 0.001). Stratifying participants using a PCL-5 ≥ 33 threshold (non-PTSD: n = 543, 71.5%, median PCL-5: 22; PTSD: n = 217, 28.5%, median PCL-5: 39), the investigation elucidated serial mediation mechanisms, particularly through childhood trauma to dissociative experiences (serial indirect effect = 0.168, 95% CI [0.092, 0.244]), collectively explaining nearly half of PTSD variance through complex psychological interaction pathways. Conclusions: Conditional process analysis revealed childhood trauma as a pivotal mediator, with emotional abuse pathways demonstrating significant mediational effects, while dissociative experiences emerged as a significant secondary mechanism, collectively explaining a substantial portion of PTSD variance through interactions between occupational trauma exposure and intrinsic psychological vulnerabilities. Background/Objectives: Research on eating disorders (EDs) in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) is limited. In ED populations, neuroticism has been linked to ED symptoms through lower self-esteem and greater body dissatisfaction, but these relationships remain unexplored in MS. This study aimed to examine whether self-esteem and body dissatisfaction mediate the link between neuroticism and ED symptoms in individuals with MS. Methods: The current sample consisted of 275 participants who reported a neurologist-confirmed diagnosis of MS (Mage = 43.0, SD = 12.9) with the majority being female (218/275; 79.3%). Participants completed an online questionnaire measuring neuroticism (Big Five Inventory), self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale), body dissatisfaction (Body Shape Questionnaire), and ED symptoms (Eating Attitudes Test-26). Results: A serial mediation analysis controlling for age, sex, and level of ambulation revealed that the association between neuroticism and ED symptoms is respectively and serially explained by self-esteem and body dissatisfaction in individuals with MS. The total model accounted for 43% of the variance in ED symptoms. Conclusions: Findings suggest that self-esteem and body dissatisfaction are important in understanding the relationship between neuroticism and ED symptoms. Neuroticism, self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction may be important targets for assessing and treating EDs in individuals with MS. Future longitudinal research is needed to examine causal relationships. Full article

As career success increasingly prioritizes personal satisfaction over traditional metrics, authentic leadership has emerged as a key driver of subjective career success. This study examines the mediating roles of psychological safety and mindfulness in this relationship within a sustainable work environment. Drawing on self-determination theory, emotional contagion theory, and conservation of resource theory, a mediation model is proposed. In this model, authentic leadership enhances psychological safety, which fosters mindfulness and ultimately leads to subjective career success. A rival mediation model further positions mindfulness as a predictor of psychological safety, offering a novel perspective on their interplay. A cross-sectional survey of 287 employees from diverse industries tested these models using correlation, multiple regression, and serial mediation analyses. The results confirm that authentic leadership significantly predicts subjective career success through psychological safety and mindfulness. The rival model suggests a bidirectional relationship, where mindfulness also contributes to psychological safety. These findings highlight the importance of fostering psychological safety and mindfulness to promote a sustainable work environment. This study contributes to both theoretical understanding and practical applications of authentic leadership in human resource management. Organizations aiming to enhance employee well-being and career satisfaction should implement leadership development and mindfulness training programs. Aligning these initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth) can strengthen sustainable business practices. Future research should explore the long-term impact of authentic leadership and mindfulness on career success through longitudinal studies. Full article

Service quality forms the foundation of customer experience value and is a key competitive edge for service-oriented organizations. In response to increasingly diverse service demands, proactive customer service performance (PCSP), which can improve service experience, has captured the attention of researchers and managers. While research on factors influencing PCSP is plentiful, there is a noticeable gap in discussions around organizational-level factors, especially concerning a high-commitment human resource system (HCHRS) designed to enhance positive relationships between organizations and employees. This study collected data from frontline service employees in China and their managers through a questionnaire survey grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), conservation of resources theory (COR), and social exchange theory (SET) and used hierarchical multiple regression and a mediation effect test to investigate the impact mechanism of the HCHRS on PCSP. This study reveals that the HCHRS directly influences PCSP and positively impacts it by bolstering mission valence (MV) and work meaning (WM). Furthermore, MV and WM serve as serial mediators of the process through which HCHRS affects PCSP. This study enriches research on the antecedent mechanisms of PCSP and offers valuable insights for management practices. Full article

This study examined the sequential mediating roles of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the effect of school bullying victimization on suicidal ideation. This study utilized a convenience sample of college students across South Korea, and an online survey was conducted. This quantitative research analyzed data collected from 1037 participants. The sample consisted of an equal gender distribution, with a mean age of 23.65 years (range: 18–30). Additionally, 30% of participants reported a household income of four million won or less (approximately USD $3076). More than half of the participants’ parents had attained a college education or higher. Also, multiple mediation analyses were conducted to examine whether anxiety and depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between school bullying victimization and suicidal ideation. In the results, multiple mediation analyses showed that school bullying victimization does not have a direct effect on suicidal ideation. On the other hand, school bullying victimization has an indirect effect on suicidal ideation through anxiety and depressive symptoms, controlling for covariates. Based on these research results, implications for school bullying prevention and intervention were discussed. Full article

Background: The intersection of occupational burnout and digital leisure activities has garnered increasing scholarly attention in recent years. However, limited research has examined how Chinese healthcare workers engage with short-form video apps as a stress management tool. Objectives: This study employs a serial multiple mediation model to explore the impact of occupational burnout on the use of short-form video apps and its subsequent effects on a sense of community, intrinsic rewards, and life satisfaction among Chinese healthcare workers aged 18–34. Methods: Data were collected through an online survey, with 362 valid responses, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, hierarchical regression, and mediation analyses, including serial mediation via SPSS 25.0. Results: The results demonstrate a positive direct association between occupational burnout and the use of short-form video apps. Furthermore, the relationship between the use of short-form video apps and life satisfaction was mediated through two distinct pathways, namely, a sense of community and intrinsic rewards. Conclusions: These findings contribute to the expanding body of literature on the role of digital media in stress management and well-being among healthcare workers, as well as highlighting evidence-based digital interventions to support healthcare workers’ well-being in high-stress settings. Background/Objectives: The nutritional knowledge and behavior of athletes are considerably influenced by the dietary recommendations of their coaches, which, in turn, affect their health and performance. In the context of social cognitive theory, this study examines the impact of general and sports nutrition knowledge (GeSNK), nutrition self-efficacy (NSE), and nutrition counseling self-efficacy (NCSE) on the dietary recommendations (DRs) provided by coach candidates and coaches (CC&Cs). Additionally, it explores variations in GeSNK, NSE, and NCSE among CC&Cs based on their sports positions, genders, and types of sports. Methods: This study included 70 coach candidates and 102 coaches, with data collected via validated scales for GeSNK, NSE, and NCSE. Using the PROCESS macro, the serial multiple mediator model was applied, and group comparisons were conducted via the Mann–Whitney U test. Results: The results revealed that 36% of participants achieved adequate GeSNK scores, but only 6.4% abstained from providing DRs. Participants engaged in individual sports exhibited higher NSE and NCSE scores than those involved in team sports. Additionally, 22.7% of CC&Cs identified their former coaches as a primary source of nutrition information. The study findings revealed that GeSNK, NSE, and NCSE significantly influenced DRs, collectively accounting for 23% of the variance in DRs. The direct effect of NCSE on DRs was statistically significant, whereas the direct effects of GeSNK and NSE were not significant. GeSNK and NSE jointly explained only 41% of the variance in NCSE, suggesting that additional factors influencing NCSE and DRs remain unexplored. Conclusions: To address the issue of inadequate dietary recommendations stemming from insufficient information, it is crucial to identify and understand these additional factors affecting NCSE and DRs. Diversifying nutrition education programs to enhance the nutrition knowledge of CC&Cs is essential. Furthermore, fostering collaboration between CC&Cs and nutritionists can ensure that athletes receive accurate and comprehensive nutritional guidance. Full article

Background/objectives: recent studies have suggested that components typical of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) are associated with depression and anxiety prevention. In this sense, the main objective of this study was to analyse the associations between adherence to the MedDiet and depression and anxiety symptoms and to examine whether this relationship is mediated by lean mass and the muscle strength index (MSI). Methods: a cross-sectional study (based on data obtained from the Nuts4Brain-Z study) was conducted from 2023–2024, involving 428 university students, aged 18–30 years, from a Spanish public university. Depression was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), and anxiety was assessed via the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) tool. Adherence to the MedDiet was assessed using the MEDAS questionnaire. Lean mass was assessed via bioimpedance, and MSI was measured via a dynamometer. ANCOVA models were used to test the mean differences in depression and anxiety scores using MEDAS categories (low adherence < 9 points vs high adherence ≥ 9 points). Serial multiple mediation models, adjusted for the main confounders, were used to explore the role of lean mass and MSI in the relationships between adherence to the MedDiet and depression and anxiety symptoms. Results: university students with high adherence to the MedDiet exhibited lower scores for depression and anxiety symptoms (p < 0.05) than did students with low adherence to the MedDiet. The mediation analysis preliminarily revealed that both lean mass and MSI acted as mediators of the relationships between adherence to the MedDiet and depression and anxiety. Conclusion:adherence to the MedDiet in university students per se does not appear to have a direct effect on depression and anxiety symptoms because these associations are partially (for depression) or entirely (for anxiety) explained by lean mass and MSI. Higher levels of school connectedness are associated with better study habits, but their relationship with academic burnout and the underlying mechanisms have not been revealed. We used a questionnaire to investigate the relationship between school connectedness and academic burnout and the mediating mechanisms of burnout in a sample of 394 Chinese middle school students, controlling for class, gender, and grade level. The results revealed that (1) school connectedness, autonomous motivation to learn, and core self-evaluations were significantly negatively related to academic burnout; and that (2) academic self-handicapping, core self-evaluations, and autonomous motivation to learn individually mediated the effects of school connectedness on academic burnout and mediated the effects of multiple factors. Therefore, educators should pay attention to the emotional needs of junior high school students, increase the level of school connectedness, consciously help students cultivate positive psychological factors such as autonomous motivation and core self-evaluations, reduce academic self-handicapping, increase their learning pleasure, and alleviate junior high school students’ academic burnout. This study empirically examines how employee compassion relates to job performance. Specifically, this study is a constructive replication and expansion of a previous study on the relationship between compassion and job performance using multiple sources of measurement. It investigates unexplored pathways within the public art sector in South Korea. Focusing on the mediating roles of positive work-related identity (PWRI) and positive psychological capital, we collected data from public art institutions in Korea, including galleries and museums, using a survey method. We tested the hypotheses using structural equation modeling and the PROCESS bootstrapping method. Our findings demonstrate a positive association between compassion and job performance, serially mediated by PWRI and positive psychological capital. Theoretically, by constructively replicating and expanding the previous findings, our study contributes to a robust understanding of how compassion could enhance employee performance. Practically, this study reinforces the value of fostering compassion and positive psychological resources to improve job performance, particularly within the public art sector. Full article

Understanding the current challenges addressed in the goals of the 2030 United Nations Agenda can influence career choices, encouraging individuals to pursue careers that contribute positively to addressing them. This study examines the association between the propensity to consider the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in relation to future educational and career paths, courage, proactive career behaviors and life satisfaction, and the mediating role of courage and proactive career behaviors on the association between the propensity to consider the SDGs in relation to future educational and career paths and life satisfaction. The study sample consisted of 314 Italian university students. The serial multiple mediation model was used to examine the direct, indirect, and total effects. The results showed that the propensity to consider SDGs in relation to future educational and career paths, through courage and proactive career behaviors, has a positive impact on life satisfaction. The findings of this study have led to several actionable policy recommendations. These advocate for the integration of activities related to modules on the SDGs into their curricula. In addition, practical implications for career guidance interventions are proposed to consider the role of the SDGs in future career planning. Full article

In the quantum era, the rapid development of enterprises cannot be separated from the efforts of employees, and the improvement of employee performance is also closely related to the behavior and attitude of organizational leaders. Quantum leadership, as a new leadership paradigm, differs from traditional Newtonian classical mechanics in that it emphasizes wholeness and interconnectedness, considers new ideas as the key to success, and values complex changes in the organizational environment, thus helping the organization provide sustainable development in the future. In addition, quantum leadership is able to manage in chaotic and potentially uncertain environments, encouraging employees to explore new ideas for solving problems, stimulating enthusiasm and motivation for innovation, and thus improving the level of employee performance. In particular, as the importance of innovation performance has been emphasized, it has been considered as a key variable in driving and promoting sustainable organizational development. Moreover, this study is different from previous studies that validate traditional leadership. We focus on an emerging type of leadership that distinguishes itself from traditional leadership—quantum leadership—which is a leadership model that is currently receiving a lot of attention. In the uncertain future environment, quantum leadership is gradually becoming a key factor for business growth and plays an important role in the survival and development of organizations in the future environment. Based on this research background, this study argues that quantum leadership is closely related to employee innovation performance. This study examines whether quantum leadership improves employee innovation performance and the sequential multiple mediating effects of organizational intelligence and knowledge sharing. Most of the previous studies focused only on the mediating or moderating role of the model. This study expands this area of research by incorporating the moderating role of innovative culture and validating its effects. This finding explores the development of quantum leadership and provides a theoretical foundation for related research. In addition, this study collected data from 345 employees of Chinese SMEs in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. These results suggest that quantum leadership positively affects innovation performance. Organizational intelligence and knowledge sharing have multiple serial mediating effects on quantum leadership and innovation performance. Moreover, the interaction between innovative culture and knowledge sharing improves employees’ innovation performance. Therefore, this study clarifies the causal relationship between quantum leadership and innovation performance through theoretical and validated research models. It lays the foundation for the sustainable development of organizations in the future. Full article
