Audiovisual Gun Detection with Automated Lockdown and PA Announcing IoT System for Schools

Gun violence in U.S. schools not only causes loss of life and physical injury but also leaves enduring psychological trauma, damages property, and results in significant economic losses. One way to reduce this loss is to detect the gun early, notify the police as soon as possible, and implement lockdown procedures immediately. In this project, a novel gun detector Internet of Things (IoT) system is developed that automatically detects the presence of a gun either from images or from gunshot sounds, and sends notifications with exact location information to the first responder’s smartphones using the Internet within a second. The device also sends wireless commands using Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol to close the smart door locks in classrooms and announce to act using public address (PA) system automatically. The proposed system will remove the burden of manually calling the police and implementing the lockdown procedure during such traumatic situations. Police will arrive sooner, and thus it will help to stop the shooter early, the injured people can be taken to the hospital quickly, and more lives can be saved. Two custom deep learning AI models are used: (a) to detect guns from image data having an accuracy of 94.6%, and (b) the gunshot sounds from audio data having an accuracy of 99%. No single gun detector device is available in the literature that can detect guns from both image and audio data, implement lockdown and make PA announcement automatically. A prototype of the proposed gunshot detector IoT system, and a smartphone app is developed, and tested with gun replicas and blank guns in real-time. Full article

Although the U.S. makes up only 5% of the global population, it accounts for approximately 31% of public mass shootings. Gun violence and mass shootings not only result in loss of life and injury but also inflict lasting psychological trauma, cause property damage, and lead to significant economic losses. We recently developed and published an embedded system prototype for detecting gunshots in an indoor environment. The proposed device can be attached to the walls or ceilings of schools, offices, clubs, places of worship, etc., similar to smoke detectors or night lights, and they can notify the first responders as soon as a gunshot is fired. The proposed system will help to stop the shooter early and the injured people can be taken to the hospital quickly, thus more lives can be saved. In this project, a new custom dataset of blank gunshot sounds is recorded, and a deep learning model using both time and frequency domain features is trained to classify gunshot and non-gunshot sounds with 99% accuracy. The previously developed system suffered from several security and privacy vulnerabilities. In this research, those vulnerabilities are addressed by implementing secure Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) communication protocols for IoT systems, better authentication methods, Wi-Fi provisioning without Bluetooth, and over-the-air (OTA) firmware update features. The prototype is implemented in a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W embedded system platform and successfully tested with blank gunshots and possible false alarms. Full article

Active shooter events involving an armed perpetrator(s) on campus are one of the main risks facing K-12 schools. Defined as planning for and responding to emergency situations, emergency or crisis management allows for an ‘acceptable’ level of risk to be achieved. This paper will go through the four principles of emergency management, detailing what each stage involves and how it can reduce risk. The first of these is mitigation, which prevents crises occurring in the first place. Effective risk and threat assessment are pertinent to this stage. Secondly, there is preparedness, which enhances the capacity of an organization to respond to various incidents. This involves drafting emergency management plans and practicing these to ensure readiness to respond. The next principle is responding to a crisis, denoting the actions taken during and immediately after a crisis, should one transpire. The final facet of emergency management planning is recovery, referring to the short-to-long-term phase of restoring a community following an incident. This paper will share insights obtained from a recent event, The Briefings, held by the I Love U Guys foundation, one of the leading school safety organizations in the United States. Specifically, the paper will focus on a possible training approach to active shooter events and other emergencies, the organization’s emergency management framework called the ‘Standard Response Protocol’. Additionally, this paper will incorporate relevant scholarly readings in order to provide an introduction to the topic of emergency management. Full article

Gun violence and mass shootings kill and injure people, create psychological trauma, damage properties, and cause economic loss. The loss from gun violence can be reduced if we can detect the gunshot early and notify the police as soon as possible. In this project, a novel gunshot detector device is developed that automatically detects indoor gunshot sound and sends the gunshot location to the nearby police station in real time using the Internet. The users of the device and the emergency responders also receive smartphone notifications whenever the shooting happens. This will help the emergency responders to quickly arrive at the crime scene, thus the shooter can be caught, injured people can be taken to the hospital quickly, and lives can be saved. The gunshot detector is an electronic device that can be placed in schools, shopping malls, offices, etc. The device also records the gunshot sounds for post-crime scene analysis. A deep learning model, based on a convolutional neural network (CNN), is trained to classify the gunshot sound from other sounds with 98% accuracy. A prototype of the gunshot detector device, the central server for the emergency responder’s station, and smartphone apps have been developed and tested successfully. Full article

High-profile school shootings in recent years have fueled fear and uncertainty among stakeholders (e.g., parents, teachers, and students) and the public debate on gun control legislation nationwide. These fears are reflected in the public discourse and the academic community, which focuses their investigation on rampage school shootings. To address this gap in the empirical literature, the current study’s goal is twofold: (1) to contribute to the descriptive understanding of school shooting characteristics; and (2) address the gaps in the extant literature through examining the perpetrators relationship with the school on the total number of victims during a school shooting incident. Secondary data analysis was performed on the K-12 School Shooting database (K-12 SSDB). A negative binomial and descriptive analysis were conducted on the K-12 School Shooting database, established by the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS) in 2018, which has been recently updated to reflect recent incidents. The findings and policy implications of the findings are discussed in detail in the manuscript. Full article

Research on radicalization became relevant to the study of terrorism and violent extremism just two decades ago. The accumulated empirical data on terrorism have led researchers and experts to understand that radicalization is a predictor of violent actions by terrorists, violent extremists, and lone actors. Violent incidents committed by school shooters are not terrorist crimes, but there is good reasons for inclusion as terrorist crimes since they have similar mechanisms. The article aims to create a conceptual model of school-shooter radicalization and determine the distinguishing features of the process. The paper presents a theoretical and methodological base of content analysis concepts, political models, and terrorist radicalization on the different levels of study. Based on the content analysis results, we identify the significant gaps in the research field, consider the radicalization phenomenon in detail, substantiated the qualitative aspects of the school shooters radicalization, and propose a conceptual scheme. Psychological, behavioral, cognitive aspects of the school shooters radicalization reflect a holistic picture of the relationship between the process phases and changes in the parameters of the object’s state. The aspects of radicalization and this phenomenon’s qualitative properties are interpreted as the determinants of the conceptual model. The model includes five stages, each of which is considered to be one of the components for the formation and acceptance of the idea of a violent way to solve a problem, but certainly do not act individually as the only component that leads to the actual implementation of the incident of a school shooting. An in-depth study of online social connections and warning signs, mobilization factors, behavioral trajectories, and imitation mechanisms can help scientists understand why school shooters are increasingly motivated to use violent means to achieve personal goals. We have outlined the possibilities and prospects of the model’s application and directions for future research. Full article
