Procedural physician-scientists have made significant contributions to medicine and science, with twelve proceduralists receiving a Nobel Prize. Unfortunately, several systemic challenges have jeopardized the existence, let alone the flourishing, of procedural physician-scientists: the widening gap in the National Institutes of Health salary cap, decreasing funding from nonfederal public and private agencies, and shifting priorities among U.S. hospitals, payers, and policymakers toward relative value unit productivity-based compensation and fee-for-service models. Additional pressures include prolonged training pathways and the need to maintain clinical continuity. Adopting a team science approach may offer a powerful strategy to mitigate these competing demands, support rigorous scientific inquiry, and address the growing complexity of biomedical research. Concerted efforts by the federal government, policymakers, corporations, institutions, and procedural departments will also be crucial to restoring the vitality of this diminishing workforce. Soccer’s global popularity as the world’s favorite sport is driven by many factors, with high player salaries being one of the key reasons behind its appeal. These salaries not only reflect on-field performance, but also capture a broader evaluation of player value. Despite the increasing use of performance data in sports analytics, a critical gap remains in establishing fair compensation models that comprehensively account for both quantifiable and intangible contributions. To address these challenges, this study adopts machine learning (ML) techniques that model player salaries based on a combination of performance metrics and contextual features. This research focuses on reducing bias and improving transparency in salary decisions through a systematic, data-driven approach. Utilizing a dataset spanning the 2016–2022 seasons, we apply both traditional and automated ML frameworks to uncover the most influential factors in salary determination. The results indicate a nearly 17% improvement in R2 and about a 30% reduction in MAE after incorporating the newly constructed features and methods, demonstrating a significant enhancement in model performance. Gradient Boosting demonstrates superior effectiveness, revealing a group of significantly underestimated and overestimated players, and showcasing the model’s proficiency in detecting valuation discrepancies. Background: While the well-being and working conditions of healthcare professionals are increasingly scrutinized, there remains a critical research gap regarding the quality of life and job satisfaction of plastic surgeons in Switzerland. No prior national study has systematically examined these aspects within this specialty. Objective: This study aims to address this gap by evaluating workload, career satisfaction, and quality of life among Swiss plastic surgeons and trainees, thereby providing evidence to inform systemic improvements in the profession. Methods: A national, multilingual online survey was distributed to all members of the Swiss Society for Plastic Surgery and the Association of Young Plastic Surgeons. A total of 102 plastic surgeons responded (response rate: 22.7%). The survey assessed contractual versus actual working hours, work performed during personal time, mental health indicators (e.g., burnout), and career satisfaction. Descriptive and correlational analyses were conducted. Results: The respondents reported an average of 58 actual versus 49 contractual working hours per week, with an additional 8.1 h spent working during leisure time. Burnout symptoms were present in 29%, and 63% experienced work-related stress during their free time. While 42% wished to reduce their workload, 88.7% would still choose the profession again. Career satisfaction averaged 3.66/5, although 35% rated their salary as inadequate. Notably, 79.8% reported work negatively affecting private relationships, despite 82.65% feeling supported by their environment. Conclusion: This first nationwide assessment highlights the high workload and psychological strain faced by Swiss plastic surgeons. Key priorities include targeted burnout prevention, structural workload reduction, enhanced support for work–life integration (especially among women and younger surgeons), and improved compensation. These measures are essential to sustain the well-being of practitioners and ensure long-term quality in surgical care. Full article

Amid urbanization, many forest farmers have migrated for work, leading to a shortage of young labor in forestry. Socialized prevention and control (SPC) measures have emerged as a new forestry model. By integrating forestland property rights theory, SPC economic principles, and collaborative disaster governance, this study compares the econometrics methods of seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) and structural equation models (SEMs) to address correlation and endogeneity issues. It aims to understand forest farmers’ willingness to pay for SPC services, purchase forest insurance, and join as forest rangers. The findings offer theoretical and practical insights that address current challenges and rationalize SPC promotion costs, filling gaps in the existing literature. The results indicate that high-quality foresters with more home-planted forests are more inclined to hire SPC companies, while better-educated farmers are less likely to purchase forest insurance. Western forest farmers, highly reliant on forests, show greater willingness to become rangers under village committee organization. Farmers organized by committees or with prevention experience suggest SPC costs around USD $65/ha and forest premiums at USD $5/ha, with high-quality farmers proposing a ranger salary of USD $190/month. Recommendations include collecting SPC funds from farmers and supplementing through local finances; enhancing the forest insurance system; monitoring SPC companies; and recruiting young, skilled rangers. Personal Branding (PB) has gained significant attention in recent years, especially in career advancement and business success. This study addresses the research gap in Personal Brand Equity (PBE) measurement by developing and validating a standardized framework. Using mixed-methods research combining interviews with 10 professionals and surveys of 396 individuals across diverse professional categories, the study identifies and validates three dimensions of PBE: Brand Appeal, Brand Differentiation, and Brand Recognition. Factor analysis revealed six critical attributes influencing PBE (visibility, credibility, differentiation, online presence, professional network, and reputation) and distinguished between external- and self-Personal Brand Equity components. Data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA), with reliability assessed through Cronbach’s alpha (>0.7). Findings demonstrate significant correlations between high PBE scores and positive career outcomes including job satisfaction, salary progression, and advancement opportunities. The resulting Personal Brand Equity Scale (PBES) provides both a measurement tool for professionals seeking to enhance their personal brands and a validated framework for future academic research on personal branding effectiveness. Graduate salaries are a significant concern for graduates, employers, and policymakers, as various factors influence them. This study investigates determinants of graduate salaries in the UK, utilising survey data from HESA (Higher Education Statistical Agency) and integrating advanced machine learning (ML) explanatory techniques with statistical analytical methodologies. By employing multi-stage analyses alongside machine learning models such as decision trees, random forests and the explainability with SHAP stands for (Shapley Additive exPanations), this study investigates the influence of 21 socioeconomic and demographic variables on graduate salary outcomes. Key variables, including institutional reputation, age at graduation, socioeconomic classification, job qualification requirements, and domicile, emerged as critical determinants, with institutional reputation proving the most significant. Among ML methods, the decision tree achieved a standout with the highest accuracy through rigorous optimisation techniques, including oversampling and undersampling. SHAP highlighted the top 12 influential variables, providing actionable insights into the interplay between individual and systemic factors. Furthermore, the statistical analysis using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) validated the significance of these variables, revealing intricate interactions that shape graduate salary dynamics. Additionally, domain experts’ opinions are also analysed to authenticate the findings. This research makes a unique contribution by combining qualitative contextual analysis with quantitative methodologies, machine learning explainability and domain experts’ views on addressing gaps in the existing identification of graduate salary predicting components. Additionally, the findings inform policy and educational interventions to reduce wage inequalities and promote equitable career opportunities. Despite limitations, such as the UK-specific dataset and the focus on socioeconomic and demographic variables, this study lays a robust foundation for future research in predictive modelling and graduate outcomes. In this study, we analyze the relationship between economic variables influencing wages in the Dutch economy during the period 1995–2023 using the ARIMAX method. The analysis reveals that lagged wages and salaries for male workers have a strong and significant effect on current wages, while lagged wages and salaries for female workers exhibit a strong negative influence, indicating a potential gender wage gap. The current level of foreign direct investment (FDI) has a negative impact on wages, suggesting that foreign capital may not contribute to wage growth, and we noted that lagged FDI does not significantly affect current wages. These findings highlight the crucial role of past wages in shaping current wage levels and accentuate that gender disparities remain a significant factor in wage determination. Policymakers should consider addressing these gender wage differences and reassess the role of FDIs in wage growth. Full article

The digital economy is reshaping the employment landscape, playing a crucial role in promoting employment stability and fostering sustainable economic growth. Research has focused mainly on the impact of the digital economy on the employment structure, such as China’s changing employment structure under the influence of the digital economy and the relationships among the digital economy, employment structure and labor share. However, comprehensive research exploring how the digital economy affects employment quality and spatial dynamic evolution is lacking. This study aims to fill this gap. First, we construct a set of digital economy indicator systems containing multiple dimensions and use the entropy-weighted Topsis method to measure the weight of each indicator of the digital economy. Second, using 2013–2022 Chinese interprovincial panel data, we introduce a two-way fixed effects model to verify the hypotheses and cite multiple models to verify the robustness of the results. Additionally, we carry out spatial heterogeneity and dynamic evolution analysis and explore the spatial differences and dynamic evolution process of the impact of the digital economy on employment quality. This study revealed that the digital economy positively influences employment quality. Mechanistic analysis reveals this impact is achieved mainly through improving human capital and increasing salaries. Additionally, the effect of the digital economy on employment quality is regionally differentiated, with the eastern regions having a more developed digital economy and higher employment quality. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of the digital economy and employment quality, offering empirical insights and policy recommendations for fostering digital economy development and improving employment quality. The literature associating the spread of SARS-CoV-2 with the healthcare-related, geographical, and demographic characteristics of the territory is inconclusive and contrasting. We studied these relationships during winter 2021/2022 in South Tyrol, a multicultural Italian alpine province, performing an ecological study based on the 20 districts of the area. Data about incidence, hospitalization, and death between November 2021 and February 2022 were collected and associated to territorial variables via bivariate analyses and multivariate regressions. Both exposure variables and outcomes varied widely among districts. Incidence was found to be mainly predicted by vaccination coverage (negative correlation). Mortality and ICU admission rates partially followed this distribution, while the case fatality rate was inversely correlated to average salary, and hospital admission rates increased where hospitals capacity was higher, and from the southern to the northern border of the province. These findings, besides confirming the efficacy of vaccination in preventing both new and severe SARS-CoV-2 cases, highlight that several geographical and socio-demographic variables can be related to disease epidemiology. Remote areas with wage gaps and lower access to care suffered most from the pandemic. Our findings, therefore, underly the existence of health inequity issues that need to be targeted by implementing specifically tailored public health interventions. Full article

Introduction: Urological conditions significantly impact global health, with increasing demand for urologists in both developed and developing countries. Disparities in access to surgical care between high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are evident. Despite advancements in urology, LMIC training programs often follow outdated curricula and traditional methods. Methodology: A comprehensive search strategy identified urology training programs in LMICs using the EduRank website, Google searches, and PubMed. Data were collected from the literature, official documents, and online resources, focusing on variables such as program duration, research requirements, and resident salaries. Results: The analysis revealed significant variability in program structures and requirements across LMICs. Residency training durations ranged from 4 to 6 years, with inconsistent research obligations and resident salaries averaging USD 12,857 annually, with a range from USD 5412 to USD 18,174. Fellowship opportunities were limited, with only a small number of programs achieving international accreditation. Conclusions: This study reveals disparities among urology training programs in LMICs, emphasizing the challenges faced by LMICs in providing comprehensive education. Outdated curricula, limited faculty, and insufficient resources contribute to the variability in training quality within LMICs. To bridge these gaps, there is a pressing need for standardized and locally tailored educational frameworks. Future research should focus on direct comparisons with programs in HICs to develop strategies that improve training opportunities and ensure equitable access to advanced urological education and care worldwide. This entry provides a review of economic models of professional sports leagues with and without revenue sharing. These include models that assume profit-maximizing and win-maximizing (sportsmen) club owners. Both approaches predict that revenue sharing will reduce the demand for player talent, depress player salaries, and transfer revenue from large-market to small-market clubs, but they differ on league parity effects. Empirical work has been sparse due to financial data limitations and has not yielded definitive results on the parity issue. Despite the growing awareness of sports economics in the sports industry, the lack of consensus from theoretical models has resulted in sports leagues searching for an optimal revenue sharing policy. The difficulty in providing consistent policy prescriptions in models that incorporate revenue sharing, salary caps, and other league policies has made economic modeling of sports leagues very difficult and complex. While revenue sharing remains an interesting theoretical modeling issue, it has not bridged the gap to real-world league policies. Full article

Attrition intentions continue to impact workers within the architectural profession, despite a significant dedication of time and effort towards higher education, skill development and professional licensure. Moreover, it is a significant disruptor to sustainable business planning. This paper investigates factors impacting career wellbeing and longevity, registration status and attrition intentions across a group of architecture graduates to provide preliminary findings into the exit destinations of those having left or intending to leave the profession. Using a conceptual framework established through the literature, qualitative and quantitative data were collected through an investigative online survey across 32 architects and architecture graduates from [Name withheld] University’s architecture program in Australia. Results reaffirm that no singular factor is responsible for attrition, although several themes are specific to architecture, as follows: salary versus expected hours worked, architectural registration difficulties and a discontent or lack of wellbeing within the role or work environment. The data suggest that common exit destinations for architecture graduates include roles similarly aligned within the built environment, such as landscape architecture, construction, real estate and urban planning. This paper contributes to a gap in understanding where exactly architecture graduates and professionals go when they leave and the motivating or demotivating factors that drive such alternative pursuits. It underscores the importance and value of addressing the wellbeing and career longevity of a skilled and valuable workforce in order to address and combat high attrition. Full article

The number of engineers who are transitioning into environmental sustainability careers is growing, though a gap still exists between the supply and demand. This presents an opportunity for undergraduate engineering students to fulfill the demand as environmental sustainability professionals. This qualitative exploratory study investigated environmental sustainability learning experiences and future career interests in environmental sustainability. The social cognitive theory (SCCT) was utilized as a theoretical lens, exploring undergraduate students’ environmental sustainability interests, related learning experiences and their interest in pursuing a future career in environmental sustainability. Twenty-five undergraduate engineering students in various engineering disciplines were interviewed for this study. Data were analyzed to (1) identify the students’ interest in pursuing a career in environmental sustainability, (2) determine if the students’ interests have changed since they began their undergraduate studies, and (3) explore how learning experiences have impacted the students’ future career choices. The findings posit that exposure to environmental sustainability learning experiences is impactful and plays an important role, impacting the students’ interests in pursuing careers in sustainability. The results reveal that elements such as personal beliefs and salary considerations inspire career choices. This research contributes to addressing the demand for additional working professionals who are prepared to tackle environmental sustainability issues, highlighting the role of learning experiences in shaping students’ career interests. Emerald Growth is an overarching sustainable development framework for transitional waters situated between rivers and open sea. The emphasis on connectivity and ecosystem-based management as the underlying principles differentiates Emerald Growth from conventional approaches to managing transitional waters. The study’s primary objective was to conjoin the Emerald Growth concept with the Coastal Circles of Sustainability methodology, an analytical framework to assess indicators of critical processes determining the sustainability of the coastal zone. We hypothesized that applying the CCS is an apt approach to categorizing the Emerald Growth’s aspects using Lake Liepāja, a fresh-to-brackish water lagoon on Latvia’s Baltic Sea coast, as a case study. Based on the document scoping findings on Lake Liepāja’s hydrology, ecology, biodiversity, nature conservation, and management, we addressed the knowledge gaps through the field survey, 4 workshops, and 18 in-depth semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders. The research results show that the challenging socio-economic situation is a crucial obstacle to Emerald Growth in the Lake Liepāja area. Subsistence salary and Housing affordability (Economic Welfare aspect), Population growth and Aging population (Demographic aspect), and Traditional practices (Identity aspect) received the lowest sustainability score (Bad). The results imply that considering the Emerald Growth conditions and drivers for transitional waters worldwide, finding a ‘one-fits-all’ recipe to ensure their sustainability is impossible. The decision-makers, stakeholders, and external experts agreed that for Lake Liepāja, the priority was to bring back to nature part of the polder system, clean the bottom sediments from Soviet-era pollutants, and enhance the transboundary cooperation with Lithuania. These measures would set the right conditions for future Emerald Growth in the area. Full article

The purpose of this systematic review was to explore factors affecting nurses’ job satisfaction in Saudi Arabian hospitals by utilizing the social determinants of a health model. We conducted a systematic review using three databases (PubMed, PsychINFO, and CINAHL) following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. A total of 235 studies were screened. Of these studies, nine met the inclusion criteria. The studies were appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist tool. The majority of studies reported that salary, years of experience, nationality, and marital status were factors affecting nurses’ job satisfaction. Gender and educational level did not impact job satisfaction for male and female nurses. Overall, the review highlighted some knowledge gaps in the assessment of the impact of social determinants of health regarding gender and educational level on nurses’ job satisfaction. Further research is needed to address this knowledge gap. Full article
