The widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) has driven major advancements in wireless communication, especially in rural and suburban areas where low population density and limited infrastructure pose significant challenges. Accurate Path Loss (PL) prediction is critical for the effective deployment and operation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in such environments. This study explores the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for PL modeling, utilizing a comprehensive dataset collected in a smart campus setting that captures the influence of terrain and environmental variations. Several CNN architectures were evaluated based on different combinations of input features—such as distance, elevation, clutter height, and altitude—to assess their predictive accuracy. The findings reveal that CNN-based models outperform traditional propagation models (Free Space Path Loss (FSPL), Okumura–Hata, COST 231, Log-Distance), achieving lower error rates and more precise PL estimations. The best performing CNN configuration, using only distance and elevation, highlights the value of terrain-aware modeling. These results underscore the potential of deep learning techniques to enhance IoT connectivity in sparsely connected regions and support the development of more resilient communication infrastructures. Hearing loss (HL) is a major global health concern, with drug-induced ototoxicity contributing significantly, particularly in patients undergoing treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). In South Africa, where both TB and HIV are prevalent, the risk of treatment-related auditory damage is especially high. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of hearing impairment among DR-TB patients in rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 438 DR-TB patients treated between 2018 and 2020, using pure tone audiometry (PTA) to assess hearing status post-treatment. Demographic, clinical, and lifestyle data were extracted from patient records and analyzed using logistic regression. The overall prevalence of hearing loss was 37.2%. Risk was significantly associated with an older age, a male gender, DR-TB classification (MDR, pre-XDR, and XDR), unsuccessful treatment outcomes, and substance use. Prevalence of HL increased notably in patients aged 70 and older. Lifestyle factors, particularly combined use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, were linked to higher odds of HL. These findings underscore the need for routine audiometric screening and personalized treatment monitoring in DR-TB care, especially for high-risk populations. Early identification of ototoxicity risk factors can inform safer treatment regimens and improve patient outcomes in resource-limited settings. Full article

Cassava is an essential staple crop in developing nations, ensuring food security and generating income for smallholder farmers. The lack of modern drying technology in rural regions requires effective strategies to reduce post-harvest losses and improve product quality. This study introduces a biomass-powered cabinet dryer designed to produce high-quality cassava flour (HQCF), featuring a heat exchanger, blower, and drying chamber constructed from locally sourced materials. The drying chamber contains two racks, each equipped with 10 trays, accommodating 40 to 80 kg of wet cassava mash per batch. The dryer, operating at temperatures between 50 and 115 °C for a duration of 10–120 min, decreased moisture content from 38.21% to around 11%. Drying efficiencies varied from 59.22% to 88.24%, whereas biomass efficiencies ranged from 3.0% to 4.0%. The results demonstrate the dryer’s efficiency in drying, while the study emphasizes the necessity of customized technical solutions to assist rural populations in cassava-producing areas. Amidst the backdrop of rural population decline and the inefficient expansion of construction land, traditional land management models are confronted with the dual challenges of supply–demand mismatch and low efficiency. This paper constructs a three-dimensional analytical framework based on decoupling types, development potential, and driving mechanisms. Initially, using Tapio’s decoupling theory, the study identifies the population–land decoupling types among 224 villages in Yanggao County, Shanxi Province, Northern China. It then evaluates the development potential of rural construction land using a comprehensive index system, and a linkage analysis between the two is conducted. Finally, the study employs the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) method to conduct an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms driving changes in rural construction land. The results indicate the following: (1) Between 2010 and 2020, the study area exhibited a reverse evolution characterized by rural population loss and the expansion of construction land, with a significant “population–land decoupling” phenomenon. (2) The development potential for rural construction land shows a pattern of being high in the north and south, low in the middle, high in mountainous and hilly areas, low in plains, and high in peripheral areas but low in town centers. (3) Villages in Yanggao County are predominantly of the resource reserve type (49.11%), indicating relatively abundant land resource reserves. (4) In different population migration patterns, the reduction in land-use efficiency represents similar proportions (38% and 36%), with villages experiencing net population inflow performing better in improving land-use efficiency compared to those with net population outflow. Drawing on international governance experiences, the study proposes classification and phased implementation pathways. By revealing the dynamic patterns of rural population–land relationships—construction land potential and change mechanisms—the logic of regulatory path adaptation, the article provides a methodological paradigm for constructing a precise and differentiated land resource allocation system, promoting the transition of rural spatial governance from expansion in scale to an improvement in quality. Urban free-roaming cats present challenges like noise, urination, defecation, property damage, public health risks, and wildlife predation. Traditional enforcement methods, such as containment laws and impounding, are ineffective, especially in low-income areas, where many free-roaming cats live. These cats are often cared for by “semi-owners”, who feed them without formal ownership. Financial barriers to sterilization for owned and semi-owned cats in these areas result in unplanned litters, sustaining the free-roaming population and burdening local authorities and animal welfare organizations. Cats causing complaints are frequently impounded and euthanized, affecting the mental health of veterinary, shelter, and council staff. This paper critiques punitive, compliance-driven strategies and highlights the success of assistive Community Cat Programs offering free sterilization, microchipping, and registration. In Banyule, Victoria, such a program reduced cat impoundments by 66%, euthanasia by 82%, and complaints by 36% between 2013 and 2021. Two other programs in large cities and rural towns in NSW and a rural town in Queensland have now reported similar results. Based on the One Welfare framework, these programs address the interconnectedness of animal welfare, human well-being, and environmental health. By removing financial barriers, they build trust between authorities and caregivers, improving compliance and welfare for cats, communities, and wildlife. However, following the loss of key program staff and the reintroduction of financial barriers in Banyule, cat intake rose by 140% between 2022 and 2024, demonstrating the detrimental impact of financial barriers and punitive approaches. This underscores the importance of sustained, community-based solutions and legislative reforms that prioritize humane, barrier-free strategies. Understanding the critical success factors for Community Cat Programs is essential for effective cat management. Full article

Background: Sarcopenic obesity, defined as the concurrent loss of muscle mass and adipose tissue accumulation, is associated with reduced physical function and poor health status in older adults. Although oral function can impact the overall health of older adults, its role in the development of sarcopenic obesity remains unclear. Herein, we aimed to examine the association between oral function and the incidence of sarcopenic obesity. Methods: This longitudinal cohort study included 597 independent older adults (aged ≥65 years) from Tamba-Sasayama, a rural region of Japan, who participated in academic studies between June 2016 and December 2023. Participants underwent surveys at least twice, with a minimum two-year interval. The participants were divided into four groups (robust, obese, sarcopenic, and sarcopenic obese) according to their health condition. Sarcopenic obesity was diagnosed based on the guidelines of the Japanese Working Group on Sarcopenic Obesity. The oral function was evaluated by assessing the number of remaining teeth, tongue pressure, occlusal force, masticatory performance, and oral diadochokinesis. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis evaluated the association between oral function and the incidence of sarcopenic obesity after adjusting for relevant confounders. Results: The sarcopenic obesity group was older, had lower skeletal muscle mass, and inferior physical function. This cohort also had the highest prevalence of hypertension and significantly fewer remaining teeth. The proportion of individuals with sarcopenic obesity was 1.7% of the total population, with 2.8% in the obesity group at baseline, and 8.0% of those were diagnosed with sarcopenia progressing to sarcopenic obesity. The Cox regression model revealed that reduced tongue pressure was significantly associated with an increased risk of sarcopenic obesity, with a hazard ratio of 0.906 (95% confidence interval: 0.829–0.990; p = 0.028), independent of other variables related to sarcopenia and obesity. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that oral function is associated with the incidence of sarcopenic obesity but not with that of sarcopenia or obesity alone. Full article

Honeybees provide a variety of services and products that are beneficial to humans, including pollination, honey, propolis, and other harvested products. In South Africa, it is believed that honey harvesting from wild (unmanaged) honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies is widely practiced. However, there is limited knowledge regarding this practice. Using structured questionnaire surveys and site visits for validation, we aimed to (1) confirm the practice of honey harvesting and ascertain the extent to which it is practiced; and (2) quantify the economic benefits of this practice to communities’ livelihoods. We found that honey and other products (i.e., brood and pollen) harvesting from wild honeybee colonies is still a common practice among the rural communities of selected areas within the Vhembe District, which was confirmed by 44% of the respondents. These products are either consumed by the harvesters or sold, helping to generate total household incomes ranging from R500.00 ($26USD) to R2000.00 ($112USD) South African Rands (ZAR), which contribute towards offsetting various household costs. Although the overall population and health status of the wild honeybees in the area is unknown, the survey respondents (29%) indicated that they are generally healthy. From these findings, we were able to establish a good level of dependence on wild honeybee colonies by rural communities for income generation, albeit at a small scale. Given the wide array of pressures on insect pollinators, particularly honeybees, from factors such as habitat loss, climate change, pests, pathogens, and pesticides, our findings serve as a strong basis for considering protection and preservation mechanisms for these populations. These could be accommodated under various local and provincial conservation efforts, especially those preventing habitat loss. Full article

Food security remains a critical challenge for older adults in rural Indigenous communities, particularly among the Mapuche people. This study presents an analysis of public policies that address the food security of Mapuche older adults in rural Chile. Using an interpretative qualitative approach, we explore the alignment between government programs and the lived experiences of this population. Findings indicate that existing policies lack cultural pertinence, focusing primarily on market-driven agricultural production rather than self-sufficiency and traditional food systems. Participants highlight the loss of community farming practices, environmental degradation, and the imposition of external production models as key factors exacerbating food insecurity. In addition, health and education policies do not integrate Indigenous knowledge and food habits, which further limits their effectiveness. This study highlights the need for culturally inclusive public policies that support local food sovereignty, sustainable agricultural practices, and the empowerment of Indigenous communities. The transition of agriculture towards sustainability faces significant obstacles, such as increased demand for food, food insecurity, climate variability, biodiversity loss, and food waste, among others. Moreover, agricultural activities must address ethical practices within sustainable development. The literature frequently mentions two approaches to meet these challenges: agroecology and sustainable agriculture. This study aims to delineate the conceptual boundaries of agroecology and sustainable agriculture while elucidating their interconnection. It seeks to clarify the scope and limitations inherent in these agricultural practices, which is critical given the centrality of sustainable agriculture in agrarian studies. By establishing these boundaries, the research outlines the methodologies to identify the relevant variables and indicators required for effective stakeholder engagement within agricultural systems. A systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA method. The databases searched were Science Direct, Scopus, Nature, and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria were (i) written in English or Spanish, (ii) published in a peer-reviewed academic journal, and (iii) related to the conceptualization of agroecology and sustainable agriculture. Publications were selected following the method’s identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion guidelines. The main distinctions between the concepts are the scale and the scope. Agroecology reveals limitations to achieving impacts on food security and agriculture’s challenges in a large-scale system better suited for rural communities and small farms seeking locally adapted solutions. On the other hand, the literature reveals that it is crucial to adopt a multi-scale systems approach to meet the growing food demands of the global population, for which sustainable agriculture may be more effective. Coal is a major source of fuel in many countries, but its mining and use increase the impacts on human and environmental health. Given the wide variation in coal use by nation, we focused on one—the United States. Specifically, we examined the public health, community, and demographic characteristics of 130 U.S. counties with underground and/or surface coal mines that exemplify a land use that leads to a combination of natural and anthropogenic risks. We compared these 130 to other U.S. counties, finding that the coal counties had poorer health outcomes and behaviors, fewer community assets, lower socioeconomic status, and higher population losses compared to the remaining counties in their host states and other U.S. counties. Next, we looked for differences within the 130 coal counties. Counties with the most coal mines and production had the worst outcomes, especially when located in rural areas. We then examined federal programs to assist these coal communities, observing that the largest federal government programs appear to be sending more resources to the most distressed coal counties compared to the less distressed ones. The daunting challenge for the most heavily coal-dependent counties, their state governments, and federal government supporters is to jointly develop plans that are realistic and affordable, take advantage of local natural and human resources, and offer a path to sustainable existence. If the efforts do not succeed, these places run the risk of becoming politically invisible and their populations are likely to empty out. Full article

The large-scale conversion of forests to agriculture has caused biodiversity loss, climate change, and disrupted dietary fatty acid balances, with adverse public health effects. Wild edibles like pine nuts, especially Pinus cembroides, provide sustainable solutions by supporting ecosystems and offering economic value. However, variability in seed quality limits market potential, and lipidomic studies on P. cembroides remain sparse. This paper underscores the ecological, social, and nutritional value of P. cembroides while advocating for advanced research to enhance its use as a non-timber forest resource in Mexico’s communal areas. It explores various analytical techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonances (NMR), chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS, GC-MS) and GC coupled with flame ionization detector (GC-FID), highlighting extraction methods like derivatization, purification, and thin-layer chromatography. Likewise, some considerations are addressed for the treatment of data obtained in the detection of fatty acids from bioformatics and the evaluation of the data through statistical methods and artificial intelligence and deep learning. These approaches aim to improve fatty acid profiling and seed quality assessments, fostering the species economic viability and supporting sustainable livelihoods in rural communities, encouraging researchers across the country to explore the fatty acid composition of different P. cembroides populations can drive valuable insights into its nutritional and ecological significance. Such efforts can enhance understanding of regional variations, promote sustainable use, and elevate the specie’s economic and scientific value. Full article

How Does Rural Resilience Affect Return Migration: Evidence from Frontier Regions in China

An important way to realize urban–rural integration and regional coordinated development is to attract labor forces back to rural areas. Most of the existing studies consider the impact of individual factors on population migration, they lack a systematic framework to analyze the combined impact of different factors on rural return migration. Furthermore, in practice, the interaction within the rural social ecosystem as an important driver of return migration is always ignored. Using data from 131 villages in 14 cities in Guangxi, China, combined with the Coupled Infrastructure System framework and the sustainable livelihoods framework, this paper analyzes the comprehensive impact of internal components of the rural social ecosystem on return migration. Qualitative comparative analysis is used to identify four condition combinations that can effectively promote return migration and five condition combinations that make return migration vulnerable. The main conclusions are as follows. First, high-level public infrastructure providers are an important driving factor for labor return to rural areas, and a substitution effect exists between them and livelihood capitals. Second, sufficient human capital and social capital are crucial for return migration, highlighting the importance of the structure of rural members and the collective atmosphere. Third, natural capital and economic capital emphasized by previous research are not key conditions for forming a high level of return migration. Fourth, the vulnerability of return migration is mainly caused by the decline of social capital, the loss of public infrastructure providers, and excessive dependence on economic or physical capital input. To attract return migration, rural areas need to pay attention to the integration and synergy of multi-dimensional capital and public infrastructure providers, and special emphasis should be placed on the cultivation of public leadership to promote the enhancement of human capital and social capital. This paper provides a more comprehensive and instrumental analytical perspective for understanding and promoting rural return migration. While deepening the understanding of the dynamic relationship between rural social ecosystem and labor mobility, it also offers policy insights for developing countries to achieve integrated urban–rural development. Background: The reported data on African universal neonatal hearing screening (UNHS) practices tend to be quite scarce, despite the developments in hearing screening the last two decades. The objective of this systematic review was (a) to identify the most recent (in a 20-year span) literature information about NHS/UNHS programs in Africa and (b) to provide data on the procedures used to assess the population, the intervention policies, and on the estimated prevalence of congenital hearing loss with an emphasis on bilateral hearing loss cases. Methods: Queries were conducted via the PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for the time window of 2004–2024. The mesh terms used were “OAE”, “universal neonatal hearing screening”, “congenital hearing loss”, “well babies”, and “Africa”. Only research articles and review papers were considered as good candidates. The standard English language filter was not used, to identify information from non-English-speaking scientific communities and groups. Results: Data from 15 papers were considered, reflecting the neonatal hearing practices of nine African states. No country-wide NHS programs were reported. The various screening realities are implemented within big urban centers, leaving the residents of rural areas unassisted. For the latter, proposals based on tele-medicine protocols have been suggested. The data on HL prevalence are also incomplete, but the available data refer to rates from 3 to 360 subjects per 1000. These data cannot be taken at face value but within the small sample size context in which they were acquired. Regarding the causes of HL, very few data have been reported; consanguinity is the most attributed factor, at least in the Sub-Saharan African states. For the majority of the programs, no data were reported on hearing loss prevalence/incidence or on any strategies to restore hearing. Conclusions: The information on the African neonatal hearing screening are quite scarce, and it is an urgent need to convince audiologists from the African localized programs to publish their hearing screening data. Population Shrinkage and Spatio-Temporal Changes in Cultivated Land Use Efficiency in China’s Agro-Pastoral Ecotone

Revealing the level of cultivated land use efficiency and its influencing factors in the northern agro-pastoral ecotone from the perspective of population contraction can provide a decision-making reference for ensuring national food security and promoting the implementation of rural revitalization strategies. In this paper, using the stochastic frontier production function and a Tobit regression model, we reveal the current situation of rural population shrinkage in the agro-pastoral ecotone in northern China and the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of cultivated land use efficiency, and identify influencing factors based on the perspective of “human–land”. The results show the following: (1) The rural population in all provinces and counties in the agro-pastoral ecotone in northern China showed a continuous loss trend. The southwest was a hot spot area for rural population reduction, and the northeast was a cold spot area for rural population reduction. (2) During 2000–2020, the cultivated land use efficiency in the agro-pastoral ecotone in northern China showed a fluctuating upward trend, rising from 0.595 in 2000 to 0.754 in 2020. Spatially, the cultivated land use efficiency in the agro-pastoral ecotone in northern China showed the characteristic of being higher in the northeast and lower in the southwest, and the cultivated land use efficiency in some counties in the central and southwestern parts showed a downward trend. (3) The cultivated land use efficiency in the agro-pastoral ecotone in northern China is comprehensively affected by multiple factors. The following factors were determined, presented in descending order of the absolute value of influence degree: proportion of the population over 65 years old > multiple cropping index > proportion of cultivated land area > proportion of rural population > average years of education > population change rate. Based on these results, this paper puts forward measures to improve cultivated land use efficiency in the agro-pastoral ecotone in northern China from the perspective of population shrinkage, so as to provide references for ensuring national food security and promoting rural revitalization. Background/Objectives: Rural communities in the United States experience increased disparity of care for both general healthcare services and access to routine vaccines. Previous research has indicated a 40% lower vaccination rate in rural communities, as compared to urban counterparts. Having a better understanding regarding factors influencing lower vaccination rates in rural areas could help public health officials prepare for future vaccination efforts. This research sought to gather and evaluate the opinions of people who live and work in rural areas regarding barriers to COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Methods: A semi-structured qualitative key informant interview design was utilized by researchers to gather opinions from university Extension staff in Washington State. Interview transcripts were analyzed using the Theory of Planned Behavior (ToPB) framework to evaluate COVID-19 vaccination-related intentions and motivational factors that the Extension staff observed among rural populations in their communities. Results: Twenty-one participants representing 34 out of the 40 Extension offices responded and were interviewed during fall 2023. Using the ToPB constructs, nine barriers were identified. Attitude-related barriers included the following: inherent social distancing in rural location negating vaccine necessity; lack of early vaccine availability in rural locales; concerns regarding ineffectiveness of the vaccine; and inadequate dissemination of vaccine information to non-English language speakers and those with limited access to technology. Subjective norm barriers included the following: perception of exclusion of rural populations’ unique needs during design and implementation of vaccine mandates; exertion of social pressures on rural individuals’ vaccine uptake decision; and highly visible breakdown in standard trust in core community institutions and leadership. Barriers related to loss of perceived behavioral control included vaccine mandates impacting self-perceived loss of autonomy and limitations in vaccine technology information impacting perception of vaccine safety. Conclusions: By identifying barriers to vaccination in rural communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, future outreach efforts can be designed to improve intention and lead to stronger vaccination uptake.
