Background/Objectives: To avoid becoming mired in prolonged deep dementia, some people seek to hasten death by advance instructions rejecting life-sustaining medical intervention (LSMI) at a point of cognitive decline they define in advance as unacceptable. When the time comes to implement such advance instructions and to allow the person in advanced dementia to die, many clinicians experience moral and ethical qualms. The decision makers face a clash between people’s legally recognized self-determination prerogative to control their post-competence medical fate and the decision makers’ conviction that humane treatment dictates sustaining the well-being, i.e., the physical “best interests,” of the patient who no longer recalls prior instructions grounded in concerns about personal dignity. The authors’ objective here is to provide guidance in resolving this anguishing dilemma confronting medical decision makers. Methods: The authors construct and analyze a case scenario involving a patient in a state of advanced dementia with a clear advance instruction rejecting LSMI at the current point of debilitation, but who is not ostensibly suffering, is experiencing a modicum of life satisfaction, and is making life-affirming utterances. The two lead authors present contrasting views on whether legal and moral factors impel the implementation of the advance directive rejecting treatment or rather dictate life-sustaining medical intervention. Results: At this early stage of jurisprudence involving persons in advanced dementia, there can be no definitive resolution of the difficult legal/moral clash confronting decision makers. Some sources would conclude that persons are legally entitled to define precipitous mental decline and complete dependence on others as intolerably undignified and inconsistent with their self-defined life narrative. Other sources would be guided by humane respect for the contemporary well-being of a non-suffering patient, especially one making life-affirming utterances. Conclusion: Through the lens of this illuminating case and contrasting analyses, readers should better understand how clinicians should weigh advance directives against shifting care preferences subsequently articulated by persons with advanced dementia. Background: Caregivers in urban settings often face unique challenges in providing nurturing care. This qualitative study explores the complex realities of caregiving among mothers and grandmothers in urban poor neighbourhoods of Bangalore, South India. Grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, this is the first study in urban India that examines how caregivers’ perceptions, along with individual and systemic factors, shape caregiving practices in this setting. Methods: In-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted with 22 mothers and grandmothers of 4–6-year-old children from the urban MAASTHI cohort in Bangalore, South India. Topic guides were developed, pre-tested, and piloted. IDIs were conducted in local languages (Kannada and Hindi). Transcripts were coded using NVivo 12 plus and analyzed via a thematic analysis approach using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems framework to organize themes. Findings: At the microsystem level, caregivers engaged with children through storytelling and play, though competing demands like household chores often constrained these interactions. Disciplining techniques varied, and the absence of fathers placed additional burdens on mothers. The mesosystem revealed the critical role of extended family in providing support. At the exosystem level, unsafe neighbourhoods limited children’s opportunities for outdoor play. The macrosystem highlighted how religious values provided moral frameworks for parenting and the presence of stigma against single mothers. The chronosystem explored declining social support over time and challenges. Conclusions: These findings emphasize that caregiving inequities are not isolated but structurally embedded, demanding interventions that address sociocultural, economic, and spatial barriers to equitable support for caregivers, particularly those in disadvantaged settings. It calls for context-sensitive interventions, including community-based parenting programmes including maternal well-being, strengthening community and public support systems, improving safe play spaces, and longitudinal research. By amplifying marginalized caregivers’ voices, this research highlights the need for policies that support nurturing care in low-resource settings to break intergenerational cycles of disadvantage. Although there are studies on digital competence in higher education, there are very few studies on digital safety competence. This study aims to explore the impact of digital safety competence on students’ higher-order thinking and AI-related outcomes. Using a cross-sectional design, 159 university students completed an online questionnaire to measure cognitive competence, Al self-efficacy, AI ethics, and moral competence. Results showed that digital safety competence was positively and significantly related to cognitive competence, AI self-efficacy, AI ethics, and moral competence (p < 0.05). Our study extends the literature by highlighting the role of digital safety competence. Educators and university policy makers may consider incorporating digital competence, especially in the area of safety, into their teaching and learning strategies. Full article

Metaphor has evolved from being considered a merely linguistic resource to a basic mechanism in human cognition that links cognition and action. In this sense, in addition to being a way of thinking, it constitutes an educational tool that allows us to understand complex phenomena in terms of something simpler and more accessible, even at the perceptual or motor level. Thus, it has allowed us to work on curricular concepts in the classroom and on competencies such as socio-emotional and inclusive skills. Although there are studies that analyze the role of metaphors that conceive guilt as dirt or moral indignation as disgust, they have always been projected toward oneself. This work, through an experiment, analyzes the role of the metaphor of guilt as dirt, but projected toward others. Two experimental conditions are compared in which one protagonist helps another or takes advantage of them. The results indicate that when other people consider the behavior of that protagonist, they rate gifts related to cleanliness as more desirable when that protagonist has taken advantage of the other person. The social and educational implications of this metaphor are discussed for promoting more inclusive classroom environments and for teacher training in socio-emotional and inclusive skills. Cyberbullying is a violent phenomenon that threatens health and development in adolescence. Some studies suggest that minority groups or those who deviate from socially desirable characteristics are at a greater risk of cyberbullying. However, there have been few studies on social stigma-based cyberbullying (SSB). This study aims to carry out the following: to know the prevalence of roles of involvement in cyberbullying and SSB cyberbullying; to understand the possible relationships between SSB cybervictimization and SSB cyberaggression and the different dimensions of moral disengagement, moral emotions and social and emotional competencies; and to know the possible statistical associations between roles and the variables described above. A total of 601 secondary school students took part in this study, aged 12–19 (M = 14.22, SD = 1.355). A self-report battery of scales was employed to measure the constructs under investigation, and various statistical analyses were conducted. The results show that 22.29% are recognized as cybervictims, 7.82% as cyberaggressors and 35.11% as cybervictims/cyberaggressors in general cyberbullying. In SSB cyberbullying, the percentages were 20.30%, 3% and 8.32%, respectively. Moreover, it was revealed that SSB cyberaggression was related to moral disengagement and SSB cybervictimization was related to moral emotions. Social competence and emotional competence were positively related to social stigma-based cybervictimization. The results are discussed and new lines of research and interventions focused on social competences and moral emotions are proposed. Full article

Introduction: The life experience of patients with advanced cancer and limited life expectancy is unique and profoundly complex, often leading to moral discrepancies among the various individuals involved in decision making. There are no data in the literature on the prevalence of ethical issues in the end-of-life care of patients with advanced cancer. Objectives: The primary objective of this study is to identify the overall and specific prevalence of ethical issues in the end-of-life care process for patients with advanced cancer. Method: We performed a secondary analysis using pooled data from the prospective development and validation cohorts of the PALCOM scale, focusing on the complexity of palliative care needs. This was performed to determine the overall and specific prevalence of ethical issues, describe their evolution over a 6-month follow-up period, and analyze their association with the level of palliative care complexity. Results: A total of 607 patients with advanced cancer and a life expectancy of 6 months or less were included. The consistency in clinical data and the frequencies of the PALCOM scale domains between the development and validation cohorts, conducted in various settings and times, confirmed the reliability of the pooled data sample. Systematic application of the PALCOM scale identified 126 patients (20.7%) who experienced at least one ethical issue. A total of 204 ethical issues (1.6 per patient) were recorded, related to the following: the proportionality of healthcare intervention (15.6%); information (13.0%); research (2.9%); the desire to hasten death (1.8%); and palliative sedation (0.15%). The monthly probability of presenting an ethical issue was significantly higher at the baseline visit (24.0%) compared to the rest of the 6-month follow-up period (14–17%) (p < 0.001). The prevalence of ethical issues was notably higher in patients with greater palliative care complexity as measured by the PALCOM scale: 4.5% in low complexity, 19.5% in medium complexity, and 30.8% in high complexity (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of ethical issues in patients with advanced cancer is high. Most of these issues are directly or indirectly related to the preservation of patient autonomy in the decision-making process. The presence of ethical issues is significantly associated with the greater complexity of palliative care needs. In this context, it is crucial for healthcare professionals to strengthen both communication skills and basic competencies to effectively identify, assess, and manage these ethical issues. This systematic literature review studies student entrepreneurial competence and its impact on sustainable development in the context of higher education in China. The objectives of this study are to identify the key factors affecting student entrepreneurial competence, recent research trends, and the role of student entrepreneurial competence in sustainable development. Using the PRISMA model, relevant literature from 2016 to 2025 was screened from databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect, and a total of 11 empirical studies from peer-reviewed journals were analyzed. The results show that entrepreneurial competitions, entrepreneurship education, experiential learning, interdisciplinarity, entrepreneurship policies, teachers, entrepreneurial curricula, the entrepreneurial environment, and morals all influence student entrepreneurial competence. In addition, this study reveals the role of student entrepreneurial competence in promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically in promoting innovation, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing college students’ sense of social responsibility. This study systematically identifies the core factors that affect student entrepreneurial competence in Chinese universities and provides practical suggestions for optimizing entrepreneurial education policies, improving student entrepreneurial competence, and promoting sustainable entrepreneurship. This study provides a theoretical basis for policymakers and university administrators and proposes strategies for optimizing entrepreneurial education that can be used as a reference, providing the Chinese experience for other emerging Asian economies to learn from, thereby expanding the global academic discussion on sustainable entrepreneurial education. The Critical Pedagogies Research Team (PEDACRI-ULL) participates in the Program for the Inclusion of Migrants at Risk of Social Exclusion (PIPE) 2023-1-ES01-KA220-ADU-000160578, funded by the European Union. This project aims to design, implement and promote a transnational cooperation network to enhance the skills and competencies of migrants. Its purpose is to provide an educational response aligned with the European Commission’s Pact on Migration and Asylum.. Among its objectives, the program develops tools for professionals and institutions working with migrants, fostering collaborative learning to envision a culture of peace. In this essay, we explore the Pedagogy of Hospitality through critical pedagogies and the dialogue of knowledge. We propose a model of migrant citizenship based on an interlinguistic didactic relationship that promotes intercultural coexistence, grounded in an ethic of miscegenation. Furthermore, we advocate language teaching as a universal right and argue that hospitality should not be seen as an act of generosity but as a moral duty. This perspective supports an inclusive and just education, where language serves as a bridge for integration and mutual recognition. Full article

The objective of this paper is to ascertain the manner in which the Qurʾān teaching activities are conducted in Jaʿfarī communities that are part of the multicultural structure of Türkiye. The methodological approach of this study is a case study design. This study’s sample consists of nine instructors who voluntarily work in Qurʾān teaching centres for Jaʿfarī communities. Criterion sampling and maximum diversity were employed in the selection of the participants. The data were collected using a semi-structured interview form. The collected data were subjected to a descriptive analysis. This study’s findings are as follows: firstly, the importance of early childhood education in the transmission of the Qurʾān among the Jaʿfarīs is evident. Secondly, the basis of this teaching is the Alif-Baa Juz education. Thirdly, mosques, association centres and neighbourhood houses play an important role in this teaching activity. Finally, according to Qurʾān instructors, traditionally the mosques were the primary centres for Qurʾān education; however, this has been lost especially after the pandemic. In addition to having the knowledge and competency of the recitation of the Qurʾān, the instructors who are supposed to work in these places are required to behave in accordance with Islamic morality. Over the recent times, families have started to prioritise their children’s academic success over religious education. Lastly, Jaʿfarīs do not have any safety concerns pertaining to the state while carrying out religious education activities. The findings, in general, reveal that Jaʿfarīs have similarities with the traditional teaching of Qurʾān in terms of method, content, materials and to some extent instructor competence, etc. The results of this paper are significant in terms of providing a concrete indicator of the pluralistic understanding that Türkiye advocates in religious education policies and in understanding the religious education practices of Jaʿfarī communities. Moses’s great command, known to us as the Shema, taught the Jewish people that the great goal of one’s entire being must be love of God but that this outcome can be easily obscured in the face of distractions and competing pleasures. The task he describes may be understood as an exhortation to live and teach moral virtues, informed by faith in God: self-management of impulses and conditionings so that we can think clearly about the goals we pursue and love wisely. This study offers an analysis of the Shema through the lens of neurobiology. This approach supports a literal interpretation of the Shema to the extent that it provides a neurobiological explanation for the role of memory, positive emotion, and curated attention in establishing positive convictions and holding to them in the face of contrary stimuli. In doing so, it demonstrates that such applications of neurobiology can enrich our understanding of human behaviour because they offer insights into the internal dynamics at work in human choices and motivations, and into the need for coherence between our emotional responses and our convictions. This study investigates the impact of professional competencies (moral, knowledge, and skill) on the occupational identity of government-supported preschool teacher trainees and examines the moderating role of support from significant others, including family, peers, and mentors. A quantitative research methodology was employed, involving a cross-sectional survey of 193 publicly funded teacher trainees. Validated scales were used to measure professional competencies, occupational identity, and perceived support. The results revealed a strong positive correlation between professional competencies and occupational identity (r = 0.61, p < 0.01), supporting the hypothesis that higher competency levels enhance trainees’ professional identity. Furthermore, support from significant others moderated this relationship, with a higher level of support amplifying the positive association (β = 1.412, p < 0.01). These findings highlight the interconnected nature of professional competencies and social support in shaping occupational identity. Based on these results, it is recommended that teacher training programs integrate targeted competency-building strategies alongside structured support systems to enhance professional identity formation. These initiatives are critical for fostering sustainable professional development and improving the quality and stability of preschool education. Full article

Background: Ethics is one of the essential concepts associated with professional nursing practice, and can play a part in the development of compassion. Although a number of instruments have been developed for the measurement of ethics, most are context-specific or excessively lengthy. The Santa Clara Ethics Scale (SCES) overcomes these problems. The goal is to translate, adapt, and validate the Spanish version of the Santa Clara Ethics Scale and to study the role of ethics, as a moral resource, in the prediction of the levels of compassion of nursing students. Methods: This study is a translation, adaptation, and validation study, with a cross-sectional design. A total of 924 Spanish nursing students participated in this study. Ethics and compassion for others were measured. Analyses included a confirmatory factor analysis, reliability estimates, and a structural equation model in which ethics explained the five correlated dimensions of compassion for others. Results: The confirmatory factor analysis had an adequate fit: χ2(35) = 173.56 (p < 0.01), CFI = 0.94, TLI = 0.92, RMSEA = 0.07 [90% CI = 0.06, 0.08], and SRMR = 0.05. Internal consistency was adequate (α = 0.74; ω = 0.83). The predictive model pointed to positive and statistically significant relationships between ethics and all dimensions of compassion for others. Conclusions: The SCES can be considered a suitable instrument for the assessment of ethics in the Spanish nursing population and, thus, can be used as a tool for the measurement of key ethical competencies during the nursing degree. Moreover, the development of ethics is likely to improve the compassion levels of students. Ethics is, then, a key internal resource for both nursing students’ compassionate care skills and, consequently, must be taken into account when redefining nursing students’ curricula. Full article

Popular religion in China has been very active ever since the late 1970s, with the restoration of temples and statues, a rising numbers of believers, and people’s increasing enthusiasm for religious activities. Folklore, rituals and legends are also ‘borrowed’ to reinvent tradition to fit in the strand of intangible cultural heritage. Therefore, seemingly reviving religions are also going through the process of de-religionization. Based on my ethnographic work in a Chinese county, I attempted to understand religion’s role in constructing local knowledge and how religious practices are affected by urbanization as well as globalization. The revival of institutional religions like Buddhism and Protestantism comes at the cost of popular religion or popular religious practices. Local deities lost the battle of competing with regional deities, which led to the simplification of local religious knowledge, a decrease in the diversity of deities and the tendency of convergence in terms of deities’ functions and believers’ appeals. A once complicated celestial hierarchy mirroring the imperial dynasty has been replaced by a more universal understanding of either bodhi in Buddhism or salvation in Protestantism. Local knowledge is reinterpreted by these religious teachings in the name of a higher cause of morality. Full article

In this review, we explore the scientific landscape regarding Business Angels (BAs), a person who decides to offer their skills to improve the community where they live, distinguishing the different ways in which it is possible to contribute. This systematic review starts with a precise definition of what a BA is in terms of goals, strategies, and intervention area, which could be in social, environmental, technological, or educational areas, differentiating a BA from other kinds of stakeholders, revealing some precise influences due to different cultures or entrepreneurial ecosystems. We are talking about a person who is authoritative not only in terms of competence, knowledge, and skills but who is also noteworthy in terms of moral stature and accountability. We used three databases, SCOPUS, WOS, and EBSCO, using VosViewer to create cluster mapping to differentiate the various areas of research on this topic. We revealed three clusters, namely Business Angel, entrepreneurship, and venture capital, that clarify different facets of the construct. BA activities are very different from conventional strategies and protocols. BAs can operate in innovative areas, bring their own technologies to improve capabilities, handle projects related to sustainability and innovation, and even address social functions and social cohesion. Development and Application of an Employee Moral Quotient (MQ) Evaluation Index System for Chinese Petroleum Enterprises

Recognizing the critical role of oil and gas resources as strategic assets and acknowledging the increasing emphasis on green development and social responsibility driven by international energy agreements and the “dual carbon” strategy, this study addresses the urgent need for a robust employee evaluation framework within China’s petroleum sector. While existing systems often prioritize competence-based indicators, they frequently overlook the crucial aspect of employee Moral Quotient (MQ). This research focuses on developing and validating a holistic, scientifically grounded, multi-dimensional, and dynamic MQ evaluation index system tailored specifically for Chinese petroleum enterprises. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating a comprehensive literature review, semi-structured interviews with industry experts, and robust quantitative techniques, including the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the entropy weight method. A two-round Delphi study, involving 18 experts from six provinces across China, ensured broad representation and facilitated the construction of the evaluation index system and the determination of indicator weights. The Delphi process achieved a high degree of expert consensus, evidenced by a 100% questionnaire response rate in both rounds, expert authority coefficients of 0.851 and 0.879, respectively, and Kendall’s coefficient of concordance of 0.243 and 0.247 (p < 0.01), respectively, demonstrating strong reliability and scientific validity. The resulting MQ evaluation index system comprises eight first-level indicators and thirty-three s-level indicators, encompassing key dimensions of employee morality relevant to the petroleum industry. This comprehensive system provides a robust and objective tool for employee selection, training, performance evaluation, and career development within Chinese petroleum enterprises, supporting informed decision-making in human resource management and fostering a culture of ethical conduct and sustainable development. Furthermore, the developed framework offers valuable insights and serves as a potential model for petroleum enterprises and other resource-intensive industries globally seeking to integrate MQ assessment into their human capital management strategies.
