Warehouse 4.0 adopts automation, IoT, and big data technologies to establish an intelligent warehousing system for efficient, real-time management of storage, handling, and picking. Addressing challenges like unreasonable storage allocation and inefficient order fulfillment, this paper presents an integrated framework that utilizes swarm intelligence algorithms and collaborative scheduling strategies to optimize inbound/outbound operations. First, for inbound processes, an algorithm-driven storage allocation model is proposed to solve stacker crane scheduling problems. Then, for outbound operations, a “1+N+M” mathematical model is developed, optimized through a three-stage algorithm addressing order picking and distribution scheduling. Finally, a case study of an industrial warehouse validates the proposed methods. The improved mayfly algorithm demonstrates excellent performance, achieving 64.5–74.5% faster convergence and 20.1–24.7% lower fitness values compared to traditional algorithms. The three-stage approach reduces order fulfillment time by 12% and average processing time by 1.8% versus conventional methods. These results confirm the framework’s effectiveness in enhancing warehouse operational efficiency through intelligent automation and optimized resource scheduling. Full article

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), which offers two outstanding advantages, high-quality food and localized production, has come to the fore. In CSA, the output of picking scheduling is the input of delivery scheduling. Hence, only by scheduling the picking stage and distribution stage in a coordinated way can we achieve fresh agricultural products at minimum cost. However, due to asymmetric information in the picking and distribution stage, the integrated scheduling of picking and distribution may lead to an asymmetric optimization problem, which is suitable for solving with an iterative algorithm. Based on this, this work studies an integrated scheduling problem of the picking and distribution of fresh agricultural products with the consideration of minimizing picking and distribution costs as well as maximizing the freshness of orders. First, a nonlinear mixed-integer programming model for the problem under consideration is constructed. Second, a multi-objective multi-population genetic algorithm with local search (MOPGA-LS) is designed. Finally, the algorithm is compared with three multi-objective optimization algorithms in the literature: the non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-Ⅱ), the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D), and the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition that is combined with the bee algorithm (MOEA/D-BA). The comparison results show the excellent performance of the designed algorithm. Thus, the reported model and algorithm can assist managers and engineers in making well-informed decisions in managing the farm operation. Full article

Community retail is an important research issue in the field of fresh agriproduct e-commerce. This paper focuses on the problem of last-mile multi-temperature joint distribution (MTJD), which combines time coupling, order allocation, and vehicle scheduling. Firstly, according to the temperature of a refrigerated truck in multi-temperature zones, a split-order packing decision is proposed to integrate the different types of fresh agriproduct. Then, the order allocation strategy is incorporated into a comprehensive picking and distribution schedule, while taking into account the time-coupling of picking, distribution, and delivery time limit. To improve consumer satisfaction and reduce order fulfillment costs, an optimization model combining multi-item order allocation and vehicle scheduling is established, to determine the optimal order allocation scheme and distribution route. Finally, taking fresh agriproduct community retail in the Gulou District of Nanjing as an example, the effectiveness and feasibility of the model are illustrated. The numerical results of medium- to large-scale examples show that, compared with the variable neighborhood search algorithm (VNS) and genetic algorithm (GA), the mixed genetic algorithm (MGA) can save 29% of CPU time and 65% of iterations. This study considers the integrated optimization of multiple links, to provide scientific decision support for fresh agriproduct e-commerce enterprises. Full article

Utilizing local brick-and-mortar stores for same-day order fulfillment is becoming prominent in omni-channel retailing. Efficient in-store order picking is critical to providing timely value-added omni-channel delivery services. Despite numerous studies on order picking in traditional logistics warehouses and distribution centers, there is scant research focusing on in-store order fulfillment with the multi-skilled workforce in omni-channel retail stores. We studied the integrated Order Picking and Heterogeneous Picker Scheduling Problem (OPPSP-Het) in omni-channel retail stores. We characterized the OPPSP-Het in a mixed-integer linear optimization model with the objective of the minimization of total tardiness of all customer orders. A hybrid heuristic combining the genetic algorithm and variable neighborhood descent was designed to obtain effective solutions. Extensive experiments were conducted to validate the performance of the proposed approach relative to existing algorithms in recent literature. We further numerically showed the effects of order size and heterogeneous workforce on order fulfillment performance. We lastly emphasized the importance of workforce flexibility as a cost-effective approach to improving in-store order fulfillment performance. Full article

Randomized storage strategy is known as a best practice for storing books of an online bookstore, it simplifies the order picking strategy as to retrieve books in purchase orders from closest locations of the warehouse. However, to be more responsive to customers, many distribution centers have adopted a just-in-time strategy leading to various value-added activities such as kitting, labelling, product or order assembly, customized packaging, or palletization, all of which must be scheduled and integrated in the order-picking process, and this is known as wave planning. In this study, we present a wave planning mathematical model by simultaneously consider: (1) time window from master of schedule (MOS), (2) random storage stock-keeping units (SKUs), and (3) picker-to-order. A conceptual simulation, along with a simplified example for the proposed wave planning algorithm, has been examined to demonstrate the merits of the idea. The result shows the wave planning module can improve the waiting time for truck loading of packages significantly and can reduce the time that packages are heaping in buffer area. The main contribution of this research is to develop a mixed integer programming model that helps the bookseller to generate optimal wave picking lists for a given time window. Full article

Agriproducts have the characteristics of short lifespan and quality decay due to the maturity factor. With the development of e-commerce, high timelines and quality have become a new pursuit for agriproduct online retailing. To satisfy the new demands of customers, reducing the time from receiving orders to distribution and improving agriproduct quality are significantly needed advancements. In this study, we focus on the joint optimization of the fulfillment of online tomato orders that integrates picking and distribution simultaneously within the context of the farm-to-door model. A tomato maturity model with a firmness indicator is proposed firstly. Then, we incorporate the tomato maturity model function into the integrated picking and distribution schedule and formulate a multiple-vehicle routing problem with time windows. Next, to solve the model, an improved genetic algorithm (the sweep-adaptive genetic algorithm, S-AGA) is addressed. Finally, we prove the validity of the proposed model and the superiority of S-AGA with different numerical experiments. The results show that significant improvements are obtained in the overall tomato supply chain efficiency and quality. For instance, tomato quality and customer satisfaction increased by 5% when considering the joint optimization, and the order processing speed increased over 90% compared with traditional GA. This study could provide scientific tomato picking and distribution scheduling to satisfy the multiple requirements of consumers and improve agricultural and logistics sustainability. Full article
