Background: Brain health is a growing public health priority due to the high global burden of neurological and mental disorders. Promoting brain health across the lifespan supports individual and societal well-being, creativity, and productivity. Objective: To address the need for specialized education in this field, the University of Bern developed a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Brain Health. This article outlines the program’s rationale, structure, and goals. Program Description: The one-year, 15 ECTS-credit program is primarily online and consists of four modules: (1) Introduction to Brain Health, (2) Brain Disorders, (3) Risk Factors, Protective Factors and Interventions, and (4) Brain Health Implementation. It offers a multidisciplinary, interprofessional, life-course approach, integrating theory with practice through case studies and interactive sessions. Designed for healthcare and allied professionals, the CAS equips participants with skills to promote brain health in clinical, research, and public health contexts. Given the shortage of trained professionals in Europe and globally, the program seeks to build a new generation of brain health advocates. It aims to inspire action and initiatives that support the prevention, early detection, and management of brain disorders. Conclusions: The CAS in Brain Health is an innovative educational response to a pressing global need. By fostering interdisciplinary expertise and practical skills, it enhances professional development and supports improved brain health outcomes at individual and population levels. Full article

Comparative Analysis of the Long-Term Real-World Efficacy of Interleukin-17 Inhibitors in a Cohort of Patients with Moderate-to-Severe Psoriasis Treated in Poland

Background: Bimekizumab, secukinumab, and ixekizumab are IL-17-targeting biologics approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. While secukinumab and ixekizumab selectively inhibit IL-17A, bimekizumab targets both IL-17A and IL-17F, potentially providing greater anti-inflammatory efficacy. This study aimed to compare the real-world effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of these agents in a Polish dermatology center between 2019 and 2024. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 98 patients meeting at least one of the following criteria: PASI ≥ 10, BSA ≥ 10, DLQI ≥ 10, or involvement of special areas with inadequate response or contraindications to ≥2 systemic therapies. Patients with prior exposure only to IL-17 inhibitors were excluded. PASI, BSA, and DLQI scores were recorded at baseline, week 4, and week 12. Due to differences in dosing schedules, outcomes were aligned using standardized timepoints and exponential modeling of continuous response trajectories. Mixed-effects ANOVA was used to assess the influence of baseline factors (age, BMI, PsA status) on treatment outcomes. Adverse events were documented at each monthly follow-up visit. Results: Bimekizumab showed the greatest effect size for PASI reduction (Hedges’ g = 3.662), followed by secukinumab (2.813) and ixekizumab (1.986). Exponential modeling revealed a steeper response trajectory with bimekizumab (intercept = 0.289), suggesting a more rapid PASI improvement. The efficacy of bimekizumab was particularly notable in patients who were previously treated with IL-23 inhibitors. All three agents demonstrated favorable safety profiles, with no serious adverse events or discontinuations. The most frequent adverse events were mild and included upper respiratory tract infections and oral candidiasis. Conclusions: This real-world analysis confirmed that IL-17 inhibitors effectively improved PASI, BSA, and DLQI scores in moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Bimekizumab demonstrated the most rapid early improvements and a higher modeled likelihood of complete clearance, without significant differences at week 12. All agents were well tolerated, underscoring the need for further individualized, large-scale studies. Full article

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder in both pediatric and adult populations, characterized by substantial morbidity encompassing cardiovascular, neurocognitive, and metabolic impairments. Management strategies vary by age group and underlying etiology, with orthodontic and non-orthodontic interventions playing key roles. This narrative review synthesizes the current evidence on orthodontic and non-orthodontic therapies for OSA in pediatric and adult populations, emphasizing individualized, multidisciplinary care approaches and highlighting future research directions. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar to identify studies on diagnosis and management of OSA in children and adults from 2000 to 2025. Results: In pediatric patients, treatments such as rapid maxillary expansion (RME), mandibular advancement devices (MADs), and adenotonsillectomy have shown promising outcomes in improving airway dimensions and reducing apnea–hypopnea index (AHI). For adults, comprehensive management includes positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy, oral appliances, maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgery, and emerging modalities such as hypoglossal nerve stimulation. Special attention is given to long-term treatment outcomes, adherence challenges, and multidisciplinary approaches. Conclusions: The findings highlight the need for individualized therapy based on anatomical, functional, and compliance-related factors. As the understanding of OSA pathophysiology evolves, orthodontic and adjunctive therapies continue to expand their role in achieving durable and patient-centered outcomes in sleep apnea management. The sustainable management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) relies heavily on community participation in separating it at the source and delivering it to collection systems. These practices are crucial for reducing pollution, protecting ecosystems, and maximizing resource recovery. However, in the Global South context, with conditions of socioeconomic vulnerability, community participation in the sustainable management of MSW remains limited, highlighting the need to generate context-specific interventions. MSW includes items such as household appliances, batteries, and electronic devices, which require specialized handling due to their size, hazardous components, or material complexity. This study implemented a Community-Based Social Marketing approach during the research and design phases of an intervention focused on promoting source separation and management of hard-to-manage MSW in five municipalities within the administrative region of Norte de Santander (Colombia), which borders Venezuela. Using a mixed-methods approach, we collected data from 1775 individuals (63.83% women; M age = 33.48 years; SD = 17.25), employing social mapping, focus groups, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and a survey questionnaire. The results show that the source separation and delivery of hard-to-manage MSW to collection systems are limited by a set of psychosocial, structural, and institutional barriers that interact with each other, affecting communities’ willingness and capacity for action. Furthermore, a prediction model of willingness to engage in separation and delivery behaviors showed a good fit (R2 = 0.83). The strongest predictors were awareness of the negative consequences of non-participation and perceived environmental benefits, with subjective norms contributing to a lesser extent. Based on these results, we designed a context-specific intervention focused on reducing these barriers and promoting community engagement in the sustainable management of hard-to-manage MSW. This study explores the potential of craft-based activities in the context of special education, focusing on a papier mâché sculpting workshop implemented at the Special Kindergarten of Komotini, Greece, as part of the Horizon Europe Craeft project. The initiative aimed to assess how such creative activities could enhance the learning experience of children with intellectual and motor impairments, foster socialization, and develop fine motor skills. With reference to literature in art therapy, craft education, and inclusive pedagogy, the study applied a mixed-methods approach combining observation, visual analysis, and a survey. The findings indicate that, despite varied levels of participation based on individual needs, all students engaged meaningfully with the materials and activities. School professionals observed increased student engagement, emotional comfort, and communication, while also identifying the activity as well adapted and replicable in similar contexts. The results highlight the value of crafts in special education, not only as a sensory and cognitive stimulus but also as a means of fostering inclusion and self-expression. The study concludes with a call for further research into the role of tactile materials and hand gestures in relation to specific impairments. Full article

This article investigates the revolutionary potential of AI-powered virtual assistants in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) environments, concentrating primarily on their impact on special needs schooling. We investigate the complex characteristics of these virtual assistants, the influential elements affecting their development and implementation, and the joint efforts of educational institutions and technology developers, using a rigorous quantitative approach. Our research also looks at strategic initiatives aimed at effectively integrating AI into educational practices, addressing critical issues including infrastructure, teacher preparedness, equitable access, and ethical considerations. Our findings highlight the promise of AI technology, emphasizing the ability of AI-powered virtual assistants to provide individualized, immersive learning experiences adapted to the different needs of students with special needs. Furthermore, we find strong relationships between these virtual assistants’ features and deployment tactics and their subsequent impact on educational achievements. This study contributes to the increasing conversation on harnessing cutting-edge technology to improve educational results for all learners by synthesizing current research and employing a strong methodological framework. Our analysis not only highlights the promise of AI in increasing student engagement and comprehension but also emphasizes the importance of tackling ethical and infrastructure concerns to enable responsible and fair adoption. Background/Objectives: This study explores the perspectives of mental health professionals on tailoring the Mentis Plus intervention to enhance positive mental health (PMH) in individuals experiencing First-Episode Psychosis (FEP). Although the Mentis Plus Program has been previously implemented in other contexts, it has not yet been applied to FEP care. Therefore, this study aimed to adapt the intervention for future implementation through expert consultation. Methods: A qualitative exploratory-descriptive design was employed. Data were collected via three focus groups comprising multidisciplinary professionals experienced in FEP care. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine the data. Results: Participants viewed the tailored Mentis Plus intervention as a valuable, recovery-oriented tool. Key recommendations included a flexible, group-based format with eight weekly sessions. Suggested intervention components encompassed gratitude journaling, emotional regulation techniques, and collaborative problem-solving exercises. Group delivery was highlighted as essential for mitigating isolation and promoting peer support. Practical implementation strategies included phased session structures and routine emotional check-ins. Identified barriers to implementation included the need for specialized training, limited therapeutic spaces, and the heterogeneity of participant needs. Facilitators included a person-centered approach, institutional backing, and sufficient resources. Conclusions: The findings support the feasibility and clinical relevance of a tailored Mentis Plus FEP Program—Brief Version. Expert-informed insights provide a foundation for adapting mental health interventions to early-psychosis care and inform future research and implementation strategies. Full article

Hernia is a physiological condition that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. Surgical treatment for hernias often involves the use of specialized meshes to support the abdominal wall. While this method is highly effective, it frequently leads to complications such as pain, infections, inflammation, adhesions, and even the need for revision surgeries. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), hernia recurrence rates can reach up to 11%, surgical site infections occur in up to 21% of cases, and chronic pain incidence ranges from 0.3% to 68%. These statistics highlight the urgent need to improve mesh technologies to minimize such complications. The design and material composition of meshes are critical in reducing postoperative complications. Moreover, integrating drug-eluting properties into the meshes could address issues like infections and inflammation by enabling localized delivery of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents. Mesh design is equally important, with innovative structures like auxetic designs offering enhanced mechanical properties, flexibility, and tissue integration. These advanced designs can distribute stress more evenly, reduce fatigue, and improve performance in areas subjected to high pressures, such as during intense coughing, sneezing, or heavy lifting. Technological advancements, such as 3D printing, enable the precise fabrication of meshes with tailored designs and properties, providing new opportunities for innovation. By addressing these challenges, the development of next-generation mesh implants has the potential to reduce complications, improve patient outcomes, and significantly enhance quality of life for individuals undergoing hernia repair. Students with special needs often require more assistance and attention to meet their educational needs. However, schools frequently grapple with a critical shortage of special education teachers and support staff. This shortage of special education teachers can result in limited resources for general and subject teachers (e.g., math, science), making it challenging to provide individualized support to students with special needs. Specifically, subject teachers may struggle to design effective curricular content modifications and accommodations for such students without the guidance and suggestions of special education teachers. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies can provide some support for teachers and schools in meeting the needs of students with special needs. Also, AI may help reduce teachers’ workload. In this technology review, we assess the capabilities of Magic School AI (MSAI) in providing accommodations and modifications to assist teachers in streamlining their workload and fostering inclusivity in their classrooms. We examined five functions: text leveler, text scaffolders, assignment scaffolder, exemplar and non-examples, and sentence starters. Additionally, we discuss the limitations of MSAI and conclude by suggesting potential improvements for the system. Full article

The conservation and restoration of water-gilded wooden cultural heritage, such as polychrome sculptures, frames, panels, altarpieces, etc., requires the use of fillers that guarantee structural stability, physicochemical and mechanical compatibility with the original support, and the ability to adapt to dimensional movements induced by thermo-hygrometric variations. This study, conducted as part of the DorART Project, analyzed the behavior of nine formulations, both commercial and non-commercial, selected through a review of the state-of-the-art specialized literature, along with the use of participatory science, which focused on the practices and materials most commonly used by professionals in the field. The experimental design was based on three types of specimens: two with wooden supports, selected for evaluating their interaction with the original material and with the traditional water gilding technique, and a third type for analyzing the individual behavior of the tested materials. Analyses of adhesion, tensile strength, Shore C hardness, gloss, abrasion test results, wettability, pH changes, and chemical composition were performed using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The results showed significant differences depending on the type of curing used and the composition and aging behavior of the specimen. Some of the fillers demonstrated improved compatibility with water-based gilding, facilitating workability and providing structural strength. M3 and M9 demonstrated an optimal balance of workability and aging stability. The results of this study can help restorers select materials based on their specific needs, considering the requirements of mechanical adaptation to the substrate, compatibility, and durability. Localised cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) is a common neglected tropical disease in Ethiopia, which is mainly treated with intralesional (IL) pentavalent antimonial such as sodium stibogluconate (SSG) and/or cryotherapy. Both treatments are painful, and studies are lacking on the pain associated with these or affected individuals’ experiences of them. A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted at ALERT Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa/Ethiopia. The socio-demographic and clinical data of individuals affected by LCL receiving IL SSG and/or cryotherapy was gathered, and their treatment was observed. Participants quantified their treatment-associated pain using the Wong–Baker Pain Scale. Health-related quality of life was measured using the (Children’s) Dermatology Life Quality Index. Adverse effects, participant experiences with local therapies, and dermatologists’ experiences and opinions of local LCL treatment were assessed using structured questionnaires. Of the thirty-six individuals with LCL included (64% male, 14% children), 52% reported a treatment-associated pain score ≥ 8. Cryotherapy administered with a cotton bud was associated with lower pain scores ≤ 6 (odds ratio: 0.15, 95% confidence interval: 0.03–0.89) compared to a cryotherapy spray device. There was wide variation in treatment administration. Local LCL treatment is painful, and most individuals experience significant pain. This study highlights the need for less painful but effective treatments, structured training, and clear standard operating procedures. Full article

Pregnant individuals who receive a fetal anomaly diagnosis experience significantly elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and traumatic stress—up to four to six times higher than those for individuals with low-risk pregnancies. In low-risk pregnancies, perinatal mental health conditions are the leading cause of maternal mortality and are associated with adverse birth outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight. These risks are likely compounded in pregnancies involving fetal anomalies due to the intersecting psychological and social burdens that complicate maternal well-being and access to care. However, there is a critical gap in understanding how these mental health symptoms translate into diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes due to the absence of a validated screening tool tailored to this population’s unique psychosocial needs. This perspective article reviews evidence, highlights the urgent need for specialized screening, and introduces ongoing research aimed at developing and validating an instrument that integrates both mental health symptoms and broader psychosocial distress. By bridging this gap, structured psychosocial screening has the potential to improve care coordination, facilitate earlier intervention, and mitigate long-term distress for individuals navigating pregnancies affected by fetal anomalies. The aim of the study is to identify research on inclusive tourism and its links with related research directions. For this purpose, a review of the literature available in the Scopus database was carried out using the VOSviewer bibliometric tool. The analysis included titles and abstracts of a selected group of articles that were assessed directly by the researchers. This process enabled the identification and characterisation of thematic clusters reflecting the most frequently undertaken research issues, and also allowed for the indication of research gaps and changes occurring over time. The results of the analysis are presented in the form of graphs and tables. In the discussion and final conclusions, significant connections of inclusive tourism are indicated. Although inclusiveness is an important objective of sustainable development, these terms were clearly linked in scientific research only in 2002, and since 2020, there has been a noticeable increase in these connections. The vast majority of studies are focused on the needs of people with mobility disabilities and seniors, but it has been noted that research is beginning to increasingly pay attention to other groups of individuals with special needs as well as the inclusion of marginalised social groups in tourism planning. Traumatic Dental Injuries Among Individuals with Disabilities and Chronic Diseases Practicing Sports

Background/Objectives: Participation in sports activities is one of the risk factors for traumatic dental injuries. Nevertheless, little data are available in the literature on such problems in persons with disabilities. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and severity of traumatic dental injuries in athletes with intellectual disabilities and other coexisting chronic diseases, as well as the use of mouthguards and the level of treatment of injuries in this population. Methods: The research was carried out in seven special needs schools. Two calibrated dentists performed dental examinations in 100 subjects practicing sports, aged 8–30 years (study group), and in 128 individuals, aged 8–25 years, who do not perform systematic physical activity (control group). Statistica Software v.10 was used for statistical analysis, with the level of statistical significance at p ≤ 0.05. Results: The majority of individuals had one tooth affected by traumatic injury in the study and control individuals, with the results amounting to 14% and 5%, respectively; the difference between both groups was statistically significant (p = 0.02). Only one athlete used a mouthguard during training and competitions. Restorative treatment of traumatically damaged teeth was performed in six athletes (37%) out of the total sixteen subjects affected by dental injuries from the study group and in two (15%) out of thirteen participants from the controls. Conclusions: This study reveals that dentists should be professionally prepared to meet the special needs of the population with disabilities and chronic disorders to minimize the burden of dental trauma. There is an urgent need for preventive programs for special needs athletes, their parents/caregivers, and trainers concerning the use of mouthguards. Full article

This study aimed to investigate the use of a structured learning outcomes approach for fifth-grade mathematics instruction, with a focus on students with difficulties in learning mathematics, across two mainstream schools in Kuwait. Three special education teachers, across three classes, who worked with 30 focus students, participated in the study. Teachers implemented a structured approach to curriculum and pedagogy based on a focus on learning outcomes, simultaneously supported by a dedicated technology platform, with the aim of encouraging a focus on differentiation to meet individual learning needs. This study employed a mainly qualitative approach involving interviews to gauge teacher perceptions of the extent to which this approach supported them in thinking more effectively about individual learning needs. Links are made to the extant literature in this area, and recommendations are made for future research using this learning outcomes approach based on a wider sample of mainstream schools and classrooms.
