This study explores the dynamics of the collective agency among gig workers in the digital platform economy, focusing on three key research questions. First, it examines power dynamics, worker autonomy, and the role of social networks in mitigating power imbalances imposed by digital platforms. Second, it investigates how algorithmic management affects gig workers’ agency and their capacity for collective action. Lastly, it proposes directions for future research to address power imbalances and enhance worker empowerment. Using a systematic literature review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis of 59 scholarly articles, this study reveals that gig workers, despite the control exerted by opaque algorithms, leverage social networks to enhance their autonomy and bargaining power. These networks enable information sharing, negotiation strategies, and collective actions that challenge platform-driven power asymmetries. The study proposes a comprehensive framework illustrating the interplay of economic, technological, social, and regulatory forces affecting gig workers. These insights offer practical implications for policymakers and platform developers aiming to foster a more equitable gig economy. Future research should explore the long-term impacts on worker well-being and assess the effectiveness of regulatory interventions in addressing power imbalances. Full article

Algorithmic technological progress presents both opportunities and challenges for organizational management. The success of online labor platforms hinges on algorithmic control, making it imperative to explore how this control affects gig workers’ prosocial service behaviors. Drawing from affective event theory, our study delves into the factors influencing gig workers’ prosocial service behaviors in the online labor platform setting. We utilize the challenge–hindrance appraisal framework to highlight the pivotal role of algorithmic control. To rigorously test our hypotheses, we gathered empirical data from an online questionnaire survey of 660 gig workers. Our results indicate that challenge appraisals and hindrance appraisals in regard to platform algorithm control have a nuanced dual impact on gig workers’ prosocial service behaviors. This relationship is clarified by the mediating function of work engagement. A challenge appraisal of platform algorithmic control can positively influence gig workers’ prosocial service behaviors. However, hindrance appraisal of platform algorithmic control can negatively influence gig workers’ prosocial service behaviors. Interestingly, workplace interpersonal capitalization boosts the effect of challenge appraisal on employees’ prosocial service behaviors. However, it does not mitigate the adverse effects of hindrance appraisal on such behaviors. This study has multiple theoretical implications, and it also provides valuable practical insights into organizational management. Full article

Loopholes involve misalignments between rules about what should be done and what is actually done in practice. The focus of this paper is loopholes in interactions between human organizations’ implementations of task-specific artificial intelligence and individual people. The importance of identifying and addressing loopholes is recognized in safety science and in applications of AI. Here, an examination is provided of loophole sources in interactions between human organizations and individual people. Then, it is explained how the introduction of task-specific AI applications can introduce new sources of loopholes. Next, an analytical framework, which is well-established in safety science, is applied to analyses of loopholes in interactions between human organizations, artificial intelligence, and individual people. The example used in the analysis is human–artificial intelligence systems in gig economy delivery driving work. Full article

The goal of the present investigation is to assess the applicability of the Gig Economy Framework (GEF) to the nursing workforce in Saudi Arabia. In order to learn more about the viability of the gig economy paradigm for the nursing profession, this study employed a cross-sectional survey technique. The survey asked questions specific to the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia and the GEF, while also taking into account other relevant variables. This nurse survey was sent to 102 Saudi Arabian hospitals’ HR departments. After removing invalid and missing data, 379 responses remained. The gig economy’s impact on everyday living and professional growth differed significantly between groups. After processing the data, we inputted them into a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network to find relationships between responses to surveys and compatibility with the GEF. There were 20 inputs to this neural network and four possible outputs. The results of the network are the answers to questions about how the gig economy might affect four areas—life, financial management, and personal and professional comfort and development. Outputs 1–4 were predicted with 96.5%, 96.5%, 99.2%, and 99.2% accuracy, respectively. The primary issues with the nursing workforce in Saudi Arabia may be addressed with the use of gig economy elements. As a result, it is crucial to provide a trustworthy, intelligent strategy for foreseeing the gig economy’s framework’s alignment. Full article

This work proposes a new literature topic clustering analysis framework, based on which the topics of digital-economy-related studies are condensed. First, we calculated the word vector of keywords using the FastText model, and then the keywords were merged according to semantic similarity. A hierarchical clustering method based on the Jaccard coefficient was employed to cluster the domain documents. Finally, the information gain method was applied to estimate the high-gain feature words for each category of topics. Based on the above framework, 23 categories of research topics were formed. We divided these topics into layers of digital technology, convergence innovation and digital governance, and we constructed a three-level digital economy research framework. Thereafter, the current hot spots and frontier trends were derived based on the number and growth rate of the literature. Our study revealed that the research on digital technology, which is the basic layer of the digital economy, has waned. The field related to the integration and innovation of digital technology and the real economy was the current research focus, among which the results with respect to “New Business Forms in the Digital Age”, “Circular Economy” and “Gig Economy” were abundant. The problems of the unbalanced development of the digital economy and digital monopoly have strengthened research on digital governance. Furthermore, research on “Regional Digital Economy”, “Chinese Digital Economy” and “Data Management” is in its initial stage and is a potential area of future research. Full article

Food delivery couriers are a new type of worker created in modern cities within the background of a sharing economy. As a form of gig worker, they shuttle through the streets and take charge of order distribution for digital labor platforms. Food delivery couriers use the atriums and streets of their community neighborhood as their places of work and rest, occupying the public spaces that belonged to the original residents. Additionally, this phenomenon sets off a chain reaction which not only creates conflicts with the activities and passage of residents, creating time–space interlinkages, but also exerts profound influence on the economic and population structure of the region. This study focuses on the time–space patterns of food delivery couriers in the Optics Valley youth city community in Wuhan city. Inspired by Tim Cresswell’s mobility theory, this study creates a conceptual framework to explain the time–space patterns of food delivery couriers, including the following aspects: motivation, experience, conduction, and efficiency. This study revealed the characteristics of food delivery couriers on the occupation level, the conflicts between food delivery couriers and other parties as invaders of public space, and their tactics. This study also makes some policy recommendations regarding the career status of couriers and provides a reference for research on the emergence of gig workers in the urban environment. Full article

The emergence of the modern gig economy introduces a new set of employment considerations for firms and laborers that include various trade-offs. With a game-theoretical approach, we examine the influences of technology, policy and markets on firm and worker preferences for gig labor. Theoretically, we present new conceptual extensions to the replicator equation and model oscillating dynamics in two-player asymmetric bi-matrix games with time-evolving environments, introducing concepts of the attractor arc, trapping zone and escape. While canonical applications of evolutionary game theory focus on the evolutionary stable strategy, our model assumes that the system exhibits oscillatory dynamics and can persist for long temporal intervals in a pseudo-stable state. We demonstrate how changing market conditions result in distinct evolutionary patterns across labor economies. Informing tensions regarding the future of this new employment category, we present a novel payoff framework to analyze the role of technology on the growth of the gig economy. Regarding governance, we explore regulatory implications within the gig economy, demonstrating how intervals of lenient and strict policy alter firm and worker sensitivities between gig and employee labor strategies. Finally, we establish an aggregate economic framework to explain how technology, policy and market environments engage in an interlocking dance, a balancing act, to sustain the observable co-existence of gig and employee labor strategies. The mental health status of informal employees is rarely studied in China. Nowadays, new economic forms such as gig economy and platform economy are emerging with the rapid development of information and communication technology, which has brought great changes to the labor market, especially to the informal employment field. Thus, it is of great significance to investigate the depressive symptoms among informal employees in the digital era. Based on the cross-sectional data of CFPS (China Family Panel Studies, 2018), this study takes a quantitative analysis framework to explore and analyze the association between informal employment and depressive symptoms in the Chinese labor market. After screening, a data set of 8893 employees (60.5% male and 39.5% female) was established. Several statistical methods, including the Mann–Whitney test and probit regression model, were used in the sample data analysis. The results show that the prevalence of depressive symptoms among informal employees is significantly higher than that among formal employees. Depressive symptoms are highly related to informal work and other factors, such as education, physical health, household income, etc. The impact of Internet use on informal employees’ depressive symptoms is not significant. The mental health inequality between formal and informal employees still exists in the digital era, and corresponding labor market regulations and social policies should be perfected to address this issue. Workers’ isolation may occur in gig employment in the sharing economy, which generates a weak perception of the organization and unpredictable work performance. Drawing on social exchange theory, this paper proposes a framework to explore the effect of psychological contract fulfillment on gig workers’ task performance from the perspective of the mediation of organizational identification and the moderation of the length of service. A total of 223 samples were recruited from Didi (a ride-hailing company in China) drivers. The results show that both transactional and relational psychological contract fulfillment can directly affect gig workers’ task performance and also indirectly affect it via organizational identification. When the length of service for the current company is taken into consideration, transactional contract fulfillment, as the representation of a company’s recognition of gig workers’ effort, has a stronger effect on the organizational identification of gig workers who have been working for the company for less than a year compared with those who have been working for a longer period. The results show no difference in the relationship between relational psychological contract and organizational identification between the two groups. Transactional psychological contract fulfillment exhibits the same significant effect on gig workers’ task performance in both groups. By contrast, relational psychological contract fulfillment has a stronger effect on long-serving Didi drivers than on those who joined the company within the year. These findings generate certain theoretical and practical implications for gig employment management in the sharing economy. Full article
