A novel approach that does not require the number of sources as a priori is proposed to estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) based on a sparse non-uniform linear antenna array. To ensure the identifiability of the DOA, a specific configuration scheme of sparse array is designed. Based on this specific sparse array, firstly the fourth-order cumulant (FOC) is adopted to eliminate the impact imposed by Gaussian noise. Secondly, to circumvent eigenvalue decomposition or singular value decomposition, a propagator is constructed by using a Hermitian FOC matrix and a hyperparameter. Finally, a projection onto an irregular Toeplitz set is proposed to further improve estimation accuracy. Full article

This paper investigates the estimation of parameters—including the elevation angle, azimuth angle, polarization auxiliary angle, polarization phase difference, frequency and range of near-field sources in a Polarimetric Uniform Linear Array (P-ULA) with defective electromagnetic vector sensors. The cross-distribution dipole pairs are alternately placed in the xoy plane and yoz plane, respectively, and the whole array is divided into two subarrays, where subarray 1 consists of all of the dipole pairs placed in the xoy plane, while the dipole pairs placed in yoz plane are gathered in subarray 2. Specifically, the polarization auxiliary angle and the polarization phase difference, as well as the elevation and azimuth angles of the sources, are firstly estimated based on the Fourth-Order Cumulant (FOC) matrix in each subarray. Moreover, a decoupling method is developed to obtain the elevation and azimuth. Subsequently, the frequency and range are estimated based on the FOC matrix. Then, the parameter pair matching method is performed in order to match the pairs. Finally, an analysis of the Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) is provided, and comparisons of the root mean square error with respect to the different input signal-to-noise ratios and number of snapshots, among different estimation methods, are implemented in the environment of additive white gaussian noise. The simulation results are provided in order to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method for multi-dimensional parameter estimation. Full article

To effectively find the direction of non-circular signals received by a uniform linear array (ULA) in the presence of non-negligible perturbations between array elements, i.e., mutual coupling, in colored noise, a direction of arrival (DOA) estimation approach in the context of high order statistics is proposed in this correspondence. Exploiting the non-circularity hidden behind a certain class of wireless communication signals to build up an augmented cumulant matrix, and carrying out a reformulation of the distorted steering vector to extract the angular information from the unknown mutual coupling, by exploiting the characteristic of mutual coupling, i.e., a limited operating range and an inverse relation of coupling effects to interspace, we develop a MUSIC-like estimator based on the rank-reduction (RARE) technique to directly determine directions of incident signals without mutual coupling compensation. Besides, we provide a solution to the problem of coherency between signals and mutual coupling between sensors co-existing, by selecting a middle sub-array to mitigate the undesirable effects and exploiting the rotation-invariant property to blindly separate the coherent signals into different groups to enhance the degrees of freedom. Compared with the existing robust DOA methods to the unknown mutual coupling under the framework of fourth-order cumulants (FOC), our work takes advantage of the larger virtual array and is able to resolve more signals due to greater degrees of freedom. Additionally, as the effective aperture is virtually extended, the developed estimator can achieve better performance under scenarios with high degree of mutual coupling between two sensors. Simulation results demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed method. Full article

Fourth-order cumulants (FOCs) vector-based direction of arrival (DOA) estimation methods of non-Gaussian sources may suffer from poor performance for limited snapshots or difficulty in setting parameters. In this paper, a novel FOCs vector-based sparse DOA estimation method is proposed. Firstly, by utilizing the concept of a fourth-order difference co-array (FODCA), an advanced FOCs vector denoising or dimension reduction procedure is presented for arbitrary array geometries. Then, a novel single measurement vector (SMV) model is established by the denoised FOCs vector, and efficiently solved by an off-grid sparse Bayesian inference (OGSBI) method. The estimation errors of FOCs are integrated in the SMV model, and are approximately estimated in a simple way. A necessary condition regarding the number of identifiable sources of our method is presented that, in order to uniquely identify all sources, the number of sources K must fulfill K ( M 4 2 M 3 + 7 M 2 6 M ) / 8 . The proposed method suits any geometry, does not need prior knowledge of the number of sources, is insensitive to associated parameters, and has maximum identifiability O ( M 4 ) , where M is the number of sensors in the array. Numerical simulations illustrate the superior performance of the proposed method. Full article

In this paper, a novel direction of arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm called the Toeplitz fourth order cumulants multiple signal classification method (TFOC-MUSIC) algorithm is proposed through combining a fast MUSIC-like algorithm termed the modified fourth order cumulants MUSIC (MFOC-MUSIC) algorithm and Toeplitz approximation. In the proposed algorithm, the redundant information in the cumulants is removed. Besides, the computational complexity is reduced due to the decreased dimension of the fourth-order cumulants matrix, which is equal to the number of the virtual array elements. That is, the effective array aperture of a physical array remains unchanged. However, due to finite sampling snapshots, there exists an estimation error of the reduced-rank FOC matrix and thus the capacity of DOA estimation degrades. In order to improve the estimation performance, Toeplitz approximation is introduced to recover the Toeplitz structure of the reduced-dimension FOC matrix just like the ideal one which has the Toeplitz structure possessing optimal estimated results. The theoretical formulas of the proposed algorithm are derived, and the simulations results are presented. From the simulations, in comparison with the MFOC-MUSIC algorithm, it is concluded that the TFOC-MUSIC algorithm yields an excellent performance in both spatially-white noise and in spatially-color noise environments.
