Ceramic art is essential in interior design and decoration, and making exquisite ceramic tiles imposes strict requirements for inkjet printing technology. High-resolution ceramic tiles are often produced through inkjet printing, in which the input images are converted into a halftone format. However, traditional binary halftoning techniques cannot produce high-resolution images for the ensuing printing process. Given that the processes of inkjet printing and high-temperature firing of ceramic tiles are a highly complex nonlinear system, and existing halftoning methods pose intractable problems, including inconsistent textures and color deviations. Based on a modified U-Net model and a modified error diffusion algorithm, we propose a multilevel halftoning method, which is capable of converting color-separation images of ceramic tiles into high-resolution halftone images. To deter copyright infringement, we further apply an ad hoc invisible watermarking method for halftone images. In this paper, we propose a four-stage framework: (1) A self-built dataset is used to solve non-convergence and overfitting problems caused by the unbalanced samples and non-uniqueness of halftone images. (2) A modified U-Net model is trained on the self-built dataset and applied to the ceramic-tile images. (3) An improved error diffusion algorithm is used to calibrate and convert the predicted continuous-tone transition images into multilevel halftone images for inkjet printing. (4) A invisible and robust watermark is embedding algorithm towards halftone images is proposed for copyright protection. Experimental results show that our methodology is effective for performing the color-to-halftone transformation and identifying the copyright. Full article

Visual cryptography (VC) has found numerous applications in privacy protection, online transaction security, and voting security, etc. To counteract potential cheating attacks, Lin et al. proposed flip visual cryptography in 2010, where a second secret image can be revealed by stacking one share with a flipped version of another share. The second secret image can be designed as an additional verification mechanism. However, Lin’s scheme produces meaningless shares and is only applicable to binary secret images. It is interesting to explore whether it is possible to extend the flip VC to having cover images (i.e., extended VC) and these cover images are color images. This problem is challenging since too many restricting conditions need to be met. In this paper, we designed a flip VC for gray-scale and color cover images based on constraint error diffusion. We show that it is possible to meet all the constraints simultaneously. Compared with existing schemes, our scheme enjoys the following features: Color cover images, no computation needed for decoding, and no interference from cover image on the recovered secret image. In this paper, we propose a method for halftoning color images based on an error diffusion technique, a color design criterion and Neugebauer models for expressing colors. For a natural extension of the conventional method for grayscale error diffusion to its color version, we first reformulate grayscale error diffusion with a one-dimensional Neugebauer model. Then we increase the dimension of the model to derive a color error diffusion method based on a three-dimensional Neugebauer model in RGB (red, green and blue) color space. Moreover, we propose a sparse Neugebauer model based on a color design criterion, or the minimal brightness variation criterion (MBVC), from which we derive a sparse Neugebauer model-based error diffusion method. Experimental results show that color halftone images produced by the proposed methods preserve the color contents in original continuous-tone images better than that by conventional color error diffusion methods. We also demonstrate that the proposed sparse method reduce halftone noise better than the state-of-the-art method based on MBVC. Full article

This paper presents an efficient and simple technique on reducing the false contour problem which often occurs in the JPEG decoded image. The false contour appears on JPEG decoded image while applying small quality factor. This problem induces unpleasant visual appearance. The proposed scheme exploits the usability of Halftoning-Based Block Truncation Coding (HBTC) approach on generating visual illumination to reduce the aforementioned problem. Three HBTC techniques, namely Ordered Dither Block Truncation Coding (ODBTC), Error Diffusion Block Truncation Coding (EDBTC) and Dot Diffused Block Truncation Coding (DDBTC), modify the DC components of all Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) processed image on JPEG encoding stage. Experimental results show the proposed method superiority on JPEG false contour reduction. To further improve the JPEG decoded image quality, the proposed method utilizes the Gaussian kernel on replacing the DDBTC diffused kernel on spreading the error term. It assumes that the adjacent image blocks have a strong correlation in which high diffused coefficient should be applied on nearest adjacent neighbor. This paper extends the HBTC usability on JPEG false contour suppression. Full article
