Organic fertilization management for vegetable transplant production is challenging to growers due to the slow and unpredictable release nature of organic fertilizers. Nutrients in organic fertilizers, particularly nitrogen (N), often fail to meet the demands of rapidly growing transplants in soilless substrate. This study aimed to develop fertilization guidelines for organic bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) transplants by evaluating the performance of one conventional fertilizer, two organic fertilizers (Drammatic, Pre-Empt), and one naturally derived fertilizer (Bio-Matrix) at a range of N rates in supporting transplant growth. Bell pepper transplants were grown in an indoor growing chamber for 28 days with weekly fertilizer application. We found that the initial nitrate-N concentration in the fertilizer solution was the sole predictor of shoot dry weight (R2 = 0.62), confirming that N availability was the primary limiting factor for transplant growth. The conventional fertilizer produced the largest transplants (370.9 mg/plant in shoot dry weight) while Drammatic resulted in the lowest maximum shoot growth (196.6 mg/plant), likely due to its high salinity and the accumulation of ammonium in the substrate. Bell pepper transplants exhibited low nutrient uptake capability and resulted in low N recovery efficiency, especially with the two organic fertilizers, Drammatic and Pre-Empt (15.6% and 23.8%, respectively). Furthermore, we found no carryover effects of the fertilizer treatments during the transplant stage on bell pepper growth after being transplanted to the greenhouse for 18 days. The final shoot dry weight only correlated with transplant shoot dry weight at the time of transplanting (R2 = 0.87) but not with fertilizer type (p = 0.2849). Overall, Pre-Empt emerged as the most effective fertilizer for organic bell pepper transplant production. It is cost-effective, has low electrical conductivity, and is associated with low ammonium accumulation in the substrate. Therefore, it can be applied at high N rates to meet the N demand of bell pepper transplants. Based on our growing conditions, we recommend 23.1 g/L substrate of Pre-Empt for organic bell pepper transplant production. Full article

This article examines the role of leadership development interventions in pre-empting leader derailments. The research literature suggests that derailments are not only commonplace but associated with a range of significant costs, from financial, to mental health, to morale, to employee turnover, to missed opportunities. Given these costly consequences, this article seeks to answer the question: “Can leadership development—especially at early managerial-career stages and during transitions—play a significant role in mitigating leader derailments?” Research suggests that the majority of leadership failures occur—or are more visible—at senior organizational levels. This begs the question of whether development interventions earlier in a leader’s career might have pre-empted their later failure. What if the field of leadership development were to adopt a ‘preventative medicine’ model in which pre-empting derailments was the focus rather than ‘fixing’ leaders as they are derailing? Moreover, there appears to be an overreliance on coaching as the intervention of choice. What if the field were to leverage a broader range of development interventions beyond coaching to ensure a greater probability of minimizing derailments? Five interventions will be discussed which have the potential to pre-empt leadership failures, when deployed in unison. Full article

This study presents an advanced methodology for improving electronic assembly quality through real-time, inline inspection utilizing state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning technologies. The primary goal is to ensure compliance with stringent manufacturing standards, notably IPC-A-610 and IPC-J-STD-001. Employing the existing infrastructure of pick-and-place machines, this system captures high-resolution images of electronic components during the assembly process. These images are analyzed instantly by AI algorithms capable of detecting a variety of defects, including damage, corrosion, counterfeit, and structural irregularities in components and their leads. This proactive approach shifts from conventional reactive quality assurance methods by integrating real-time defect detection and strict adherence to industry standards into the assembly process. With an accuracy rate exceeding 99.5% and processing speeds of about 5 ms per component, this system enables manufacturers to identify and address defects promptly, thereby significantly enhancing manufacturing quality and reliability. The implementation leverages big data analytics, analyzing over a billion components to refine detection algorithms and ensure robust performance. By pre-empting and resolving defects before they escalate, the methodology minimizes production disruptions and fosters a more efficient workflow, ultimately resulting in considerable cost reductions. This paper showcases multiple case studies of component defects, highlighting the diverse types of defects identified through AI and deep learning. These examples, combined with detailed performance metrics, provide insights into optimizing electronic component assembly processes, contributing to elevated production efficiency and quality. Geopolitical risks and shocks such as military conflicts, terrorist attacks, and war tensions are known to cause significant economic downturns. The main purpose of this paper is to determine the dynamics between Australian sovereign bond yields and geopolitical risk. This is achieved by employing a quantile regression analysis. The findings of this study indicate that the impact of geopolitical risk on Australian sovereign yield dynamics is asymmetrical. Furthermore, an increase in geopolitical risk only impacts short-term yields at extreme regimes. However, the impact is, by and large, insignificant. On the other hand, an increase in geopolitical risk does have a statistically significant positive impact on medium- and long-term yields across most quantiles. Lastly, an increase in geopolitical risk tends to result in a steeper yield curve at the belly of the curve but causes the yield curve to flatten at the long end. This study is the first study that holistically examines the dynamics between geopolitical risk and Australian sovereign bond yields. The study thereby contributes to the body of knowledge on Australian bond yields, specifically, and adds to the sparse body of knowledge on the dynamics between geopolitical risk and sovereign bond yields. The findings of this study have implications for monetary policy makers, given that shifts in sovereign bond yields could impact all three core mandates of the Australian Reserve Bank. Furthermore, changes in the slope of the yieldcurve could be used by monetary policy makers to pre-empt changes in future economic growth. The results of this study also relate to fiscal policy formulation, given that yields directly impact the cost of government borrowing. Lastly, portfolio managers could benefit from the results of this study, as these results provide information on the ability of Australian sovereign bonds to hedge against geopolitical risk. New-age (Nano) Modified Emulsions (NME) for stabilising marginal materials used in the upper-pavement layers of roads have been proven in laboratories, through accelerated pavement tests (APT) in the field as well as in practice. In addition, materials design methods have been developed based on the scientific analysis of granular material mineralogy and the chemical interaction with the binder to design a material-compatible anionic NME stabilising agent for naturally available (often marginal) materials. However, any new disruptive technology that is introduced into a traditionally well-established industry, such as the road construction industry, is usually associated with considerable resistance. This is especially relevant when the new technology enables the use of granular materials traditionally considered to be of an unacceptable quality in combination with relatively new concepts such as an anionic NME stabilising agent. In practice, few road construction projects are without problems. New technologies are obviously easy targets to blame for any non-related problems that may arise during construction. In this article, we aim to assist in pre-empting, recognising, preventing, and resolving material or non-material related construction problems by correctly identifying the cause of the problems and recommending the best, most cost-effective ways to correct any deficiencies on site. This paper proposes an enhanced modular multilevel converter as an alternative to the conventional half-bridge modular multilevel converter that employs a reduced number of medium-voltage cells, with the aim of improving waveforms quality in its AC and DC sides. Each enhanced modular multilevel converter arm consists of high-voltage and low-voltage chain-links. The enhanced modular multilevel converter uses the high-voltage chain-links based on medium-voltage half-bridge cells to synthesize the fundamental voltage using nearest level modulation. Although the low-voltage chain-links filter out the voltage harmonics from the voltage generated by the high-voltage chain-links, which are rough and stepped approximations of the fundamental voltage, the enhanced modular multilevel converter uses the nested multilevel concept to dramatically increase the number of voltage levels per phase compared to half-bridge modular multilevel converter. The aforementioned improvements are achieved at the cost of a small increase in semiconductor losses. Detailed simulations conducted in EMPT-RV and experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed converter. Full article

The intensifying expansion of arboviruses highlights the need for effective invasive Aedes control. While mass-trapping interventions have long been discredited as inefficient compared to insecticide applications, increasing levels of insecticide resistance, and the development of simple affordable traps that target and kill gravid female mosquitoes, show great promise. We summarize the methodologies and outcomes of recent lethal oviposition trap-based mass interventions for suppression of urban Aedes and their associated diseases. The evidence supports the recommendation of mass deployments of oviposition traps to suppress populations of invasive Aedes, although better measures of the effects on disease control are needed. Strategies associated with successful mass-trap deployments include: (1) high coverage (>80%) of the residential areas; (2) pre-intervention and/or parallel source reduction campaigns; (3) direct involvement of community members for economic long-term sustainability; and (4) use of new-generation larger traps (Autocidal Gravid Ovitrap, AGO; Gravid Aedes Trap, GAT) to outcompete remaining water-holding containers. While to the best of our knowledge all published studies so far have been on Ae. aegypti in resource-poor or tropical settings, we propose that mass deployment of lethal oviposition traps can be used for focused cost-effective control of temperate Ae. albopictus pre-empting arboviral epidemics and increasing participation of residents in urban mosquito control. Pit latrines are the main form of sanitation in unplanned areas in many rapidly growing developing cities. Understanding demand for pit latrine fecal sludge management (FSM) services in these communities is important for designing demand-responsive sanitation services and policies to improve public health. We examine latrine emptying knowledge, attitudes, behavior, trends and rates of safe/unsafe emptying, and measure demand for a new hygienic latrine emptying service in unplanned communities in Dar Es Salaam (Dar), Tanzania, using data from a cross-sectional survey at 662 residential properties in 35 unplanned sub-wards across Dar, where 97% had pit latrines. A picture emerges of expensive and poor FSM service options for latrine owners, resulting in widespread fecal sludge exposure that is likely to increase unless addressed. Households delay emptying as long as possible, use full pits beyond what is safe, face high costs even for unhygienic emptying, and resort to unsafe practices like ‘flooding out’. We measured strong interest in and willingness to pay (WTP) for the new pit emptying service at 96% of residences; 57% were WTP ≥U.S. $17 to remove ≥200 L of sludge. Emerging policy recommendations for safe FSM in unplanned urban communities in Dar and elsewhere are discussed. Full article
