Educational buildings, including schools, nurseries and universities, face stricter regulation and design control on indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal conditions than other built environments, as these may affect children’s health and wellbeing. In this scoping review, wide-ranging health, performance, and absenteeism consequences of poor—and benefits of good—IAQ and thermal conditions are evaluated, focusing on source control, ventilation and air purification interventions. Economic impacts of interventions in educational buildings have been evaluated to enable the assessment of tangible building-related costs and savings, alongside less easily quantifiable improvements in educational attainment and reduced healthcare. Key recommendations are provided to assist decision makers in pathways to provide clean air, at an optimal temperature for students’ learning and health outcomes. Although the role of educational buildings can be challenging to isolate from other socio-economic confounders, secondary short- and long-term impacts on attainment and absenteeism have been demonstrated from the health effects associated with various pollutants. Sometimes overlooked, source control and repairing existing damage can be important cost-effective methods in minimising generation and preventing ingress of pollutants. Existing ventilation standards are often not met, even when mechanical and hybrid ventilation systems are already in place, but can often be achieved with a fraction of a typical school budget through operational and maintenance improvements, and small-scale air-cleaning and ventilation technologies, where necessary. The increasing complexity of modern control systems highlights the need for reliable and robust fault detection, isolation, and identification (FDII) methods, particularly in safety-critical and industrial applications. The study focuses on the FDII of multiplicative faults in a DC motor and its electronic amplifier. To simulate such scenarios, a complete laboratory platform was developed for real-time FDII, using relay-based switching and custom LabVIEW software 2009. This platform enables real-time experimentation and represents an important component of the study. Two estimation-based fault detection (FD) algorithms were implemented: the Sliding Window Algorithm (SWA) for discrete-time models and a modified Sliding Integral Algorithm (SIA) for continuous-time models. The modification introduced to the SIA limits the data length used in least squares estimation, thereby reducing the impact of transient effects on parameter accuracy. Both algorithms achieved high model output-to-measured signal agreement, up to 98.6% under nominal conditions and above 95% during almost all fault scenarios. Moreover, the proposed fault isolation and identification methods, including a decision algorithm and an indirect estimation approach, successfully isolated and identified faults in key components such as amplifier resistors (R1, R9, R12), capacitor (C8), and motor parameters, including armature resistance (Ra), inertia (J), and friction coefficient (B). The decision algorithm, based on continuous-time model coefficients, demonstrated reliable fault isolation and identification, while the reduced Jacobian-based approach in the discrete model enhanced fault magnitude estimation, with deviations typically below 10%. Additionally, the platform supports remote experimentation, offering a valuable resource for advancing model-based FDII research and engineering education. Full article

In alignment with global educational trends, Australia has adopted a pluralistic approach to initial teacher education (ITE), encompassing traditional university-based programs, employment-integrated models and vocational training routes. This diversification of pathways has emerged as a strategic response to persistent workforce challenges, including chronic shortages, uneven distribution of qualified educators, and limited demographic diversity within the profession. Rather than supplanting conventional ITE models, these alternative pathways serve as complementary options, broadening access and enhancing system responsiveness to evolving societal and educational needs. The rise in non-traditional routes represents a deliberate response to the well-documented global teacher shortage, frequently examined in comparative educational research. Central to their design is a restructuring of traditional program elements, particularly duration and delivery methods, to facilitate more flexible and context-sensitive forms of teacher preparation. Such approaches often create opportunities for individuals who may be excluded from conventional pathways due to socioeconomic constraints, geographic isolation, or non-linear career trajectories. Significantly, the diversity introduced by alternative entry candidates has the potential to enrich school learning environments. These educators often bring a wide range of prior experiences, disciplinary knowledge, and cultural perspectives, contributing to more inclusive and representative teaching practices. The implications for student learning are substantial, particularly in disadvantaged communities where culturally and professionally diverse teachers may enhance engagement and academic outcomes. From a policy perspective, the development of flexible, multifaceted teacher education pathways constitutes a critical component of a sustainable workforce strategy. As demand for qualified teachers intensifies, especially in STEM disciplines and in rural, regional and remote areas, the role of alternative pathways is likely to become increasingly pivotal in achieving broader goals of equity, quality and innovation in teacher preparation. Indigenous students remain significantly underrepresented in medical education, contributing to persistent health inequities in their communities. Systemic barriers, including cultural isolation, inadequate resources, and biased curricula, hinder their success. But what if generative artificial intelligence (GAI) could be the game-changer? This scoping review explores the potential of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in making medical education more inclusive and supportive for Indigenous students through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature. From AI-powered engagement platforms to personalised learning systems and immersive simulations, GAI can be harnessed to bridge the gap. While GAI holds promise, challenges like biased datasets and limited access to technology must be addressed. To unlock GAI’s potential, we recommend faculty development, expansion of digital infrastructure, and Indigenous-led AI design. By carefully harnessing GAI, medical schools can take a crucial step towards creating a more diverse and equitable healthcare workforce, ultimately improving health outcomes for Indigenous communities. Children’s safety, well-being and inclusion in the school environment can be severely impacted by social isolation and bullying. This study examined these threats in a sample of 14 group-classes (291 students) from four different primary education schools. A total of 44 special educational needs (SEN) students and 44 students without SEN were selected. The social network structure of each group-class was analysed, as well as the number of friendship ties, the degree of emotional well-being and social participation (both inside and outside of the school), and the possible cases of bullying. The results show a significantly greater rate of social rejection, emotional distress and risk of exclusion in SEN students with respect to their peers, as well as a considerably higher perception of bullying (38.6% vs. 4.8%). The SEN students who reported bullying were mostly schooled in social networks with a more segregated and fragmented structure. Moreover, the mean value obtained in these groups was lower for all the analysed indicators, although the differences were not statistically significant. These data support the idea that the social capital of the group class could influence the prevention of violence and bullying towards SEN students. However, further studies with larger samples are needed to confirm this. Lastly, strategies to promote the social inclusion of SEN students in primary education schools are discussed. Full article

Internet addiction among adolescents has emerged as a significant global health issue, contributing to social isolation, academic difficulties, and emotional disorders, with excessive use of social networks further intensifying these challenges. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an educational intervention grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in reducing Internet addiction and enhancing academic performance among adolescent girls in southern Iran. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 370 female students aged 15–16 years, selected through two-stage cluster random sampling and divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention group participated in a five-week TPB-based program, incorporating lectures, group discussions, and parent–teacher meetings, while the control group received unrelated health education. Data were collected using the Yang Internet Addiction Test (IAT), a TPB-based questionnaire, and academic performance scores (grade point average, GPA) before and after the intervention. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant improvements in attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions to reduce Internet use (p < 0.001). Internet addiction scores significantly declined, and GPA improved in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.950). The findings support TPB-based interventions as effective tools for reducing Internet addiction and improving academic outcomes among adolescents. This study was registered with the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT20131014015015N18). Full article

Background: Chronic pain affects one in five youth globally and is frequently accompanied by mental health challenges that extend into adulthood. Caregivers play a vital role in supporting youth with chronic pain, yet their own mental and physical health needs are often overlooked. While caregiver well-being is linked to child outcomes, few interventions directly address caregivers’ health, especially among those facing systemic barriers. This study explored the lived experiences of caregivers to better understand their unmet needs and inform the co-design of a supportive digital health solution. Methods: We conducted a qualitative exploratory study involving 32 caregivers of youth with chronic pain across Canada and Australia. Semi-structured interviews were co-facilitated by caregiver partners. Thematic analysis was applied to interview data. Results: Two overarching themes were identified: (1) bearing the weight and sacrifice of caregiving and (2) deep interrelatedness and blurred boundaries. Caregivers reported profound emotional, physical, and financial burdens; strained relationships; and social isolation. Many struggled with self-neglect, prioritizing their child’s needs over their own. Fathers’ evolving caregiving roles challenged traditional gender norms, though mothers continued to bear a disproportionate load. Despite challenges, caregivers demonstrated resilience and recognized their well-being as interconnected with their child’s health. Conclusions: Findings underscore the need for systemic investment in caregiver well-being. Digital health solutions, including virtual peer networks, mental health resources, and tailored education, offer scalable, accessible pathways for support. These insights will inform the development of Power over Pain for Primary Caregivers, a digital solution and knowledge hub aimed at improving caregiver well-being and family outcomes, aligning with global efforts to enhance family-centred pediatric pain care. Objectives: In the context of the global rise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), this study aimed to investigate temporal trends in AMR among pathogens isolated from endometrial cultures of patients diagnosed with chronic endometritis (CE). Methods: This cross-sectional study included 244 women consecutively diagnosed with CE at the Gynecology Unit of the University of Bari, Italy, between January 2020 and June 2024. Exclusion criteria were (i) previous CE diagnosis or treatment; (ii) antimicrobial use in the month prior to hysteroscopy and biopsy; (iii) use of oral or vaginal prebiotics/probiotics or contraceptives in the three months prior; (iv) known immunosuppression; and (v) hypersensitivity to quinolones or macrolides. CE was diagnosed using hysteroscopy combined with endometrial histology and microbial culture. Specifically, in cases with hysteroscopic signs suggestive of CE, endometrial biopsies were obtained using a Novak curette and processed for histological and immunohistochemical analyses, as well as for microbial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing in accordance with EUCAST guidelines. The primary outcomes were the prevalence of CE-associated pathogens and their AMR profiles. Results: The median age at CE diagnosis was 33 years (range 26–44). The most frequently isolated pathogens were Enterococcus faecalis (26.2%), Escherichia coli (19.3%), and Ureaplasma urealyticum (16.4%). High AMR rates were observed, with increasing trends over time. Ampicillin resistance reached 98.5% (63/64), penicillin resistance 30.8% (16/52), and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) positivity 34.7% (25/72), all with statistically significant trends (p < 0.001). Resistance to commonly used first-line antimicrobials, such as tetracyclines, quinolones, and nitroimidazoles, was also substantial. Conclusions: This study highlights a significant increase in AMRs among microorganisms responsible for CE between 2020 and 2024. As a result, empirical first-line antimicrobial therapies commonly used to treat patients with CE may be increasingly ineffective in a growing number of cases. This underscores the need for improved and targeted diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to effectively manage CE and prevent treatment failures. Strengthening surveillance systems, implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs, and enhancing patient education may help counter the growing threat of AMR. Full article

Choreographing Well-Being: The Predictive Role of Self-Compassion on Life Satisfaction—A Therapeutic-Based Art Pedagogy Perspective in Recreational Dance

Dance encompasses physical, emotional, and social elements, creating a dynamic platform for the exploration of well-being. As a therapeutic approach, dance movement further applies these dimensions to enhance emotional resilience, foster mindfulness, and improve overall mental health. This study examined the relationship between self-compassion and life satisfaction among 912 recreational dancers (80% female and 20% male) in Greece. Participants completed the Self-Compassion Scale and Satisfaction with Life Scale. Confirmatory Factor Analysis validated the five-factor self-compassion model, and regression analysis identified predictors of life satisfaction. Self-kindness emerged as a strong positive predictor (β = 0.258, p < 0.001), while isolation (β = −0.307, p < 0.001) and self-judgment (β = −0.083, p = 0.029) negatively predicted life satisfaction. Common humanity (β = 0.064, p = 0.066) and mindfulness (β = 0.004, p = 0.907) showed no significant predictive effect. The model explained 21.7% of the variance in life satisfaction (R2 = 0.217). Small but statistically significant differences in self-compassion dimensions were observed across dance styles. Partner-oriented dancers such as those practicing tango reported slightly higher self-kindness and mindfulness, while ballet dancers showed a small increase in self-judgment and isolation. Life satisfaction remained consistent across styles, highlighting dance’s overall contribution to well-being. These findings suggest that integrating self-compassion training into dance education and psychotherapy, particularly within a Therapeutic-Based Art Pedagogy framework, may contribute to emotional resilience, foster social connection, and promote mental health, positioning dance as a potentially transformative tool for holistic development. Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as powerful tools in cyber security, enabling automation, threat detection, and adaptive learning. Their ability to process unstructured data and generate context-aware outputs supports both operational tasks and educational initiatives. Despite their growing adoption, current research often focuses on isolated applications, lacking a systematic understanding of how LLMs align with domain-specific requirements and pedagogical effectiveness. This highlights a pressing need for comprehensive evaluations that address the challenges of integration, generalization, and ethical deployment in both operational and educational cyber security environments. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive and State-of-the-Art review of the significant role of LLMs in cyber security, addressing both operational and educational dimensions. It introduces a holistic framework that categorizes LLM applications into six key cyber security domains, examining each in depth to demonstrate their impact on automation, context-aware reasoning, and adaptability to emerging threats. The paper highlights the potential of LLMs to enhance operational performance and educational effectiveness while also exploring emerging technical, ethical, and security challenges. The paper also uniquely addresses the underexamined area of LLMs in cyber security education by reviewing recent studies and illustrating how these models support personalized learning, hands-on training, and awareness initiatives. The key findings reveal that while LLMs offer significant potential in automating tasks and enabling personalized learning, challenges remain in model generalization, ethical deployment, and production readiness. Finally, the paper discusses open issues and future research directions for the application of LLMs in both operational and educational contexts. This paper serves as a valuable reference for researchers, educators, and practitioners aiming to develop intelligent, adaptive, scalable, and ethically responsible LLM-based cyber security solutions. Oklahoma has become a focal point in the national escalation of anti-2SLGBTQIA+ and anti-DEI efforts, emerging as one of the most aggressive states in proposing and advancing bills that undermine queer and trans rights across sectors, including public education, healthcare, free speech, and civil liberties. Although many bills do not pass into law, the volume, language, and momentum constitute a discursive and political terrain that actively regulates 2SLGBTQIA+ lives. This study retools the concept of strategic planning—typically associated with institutions’ mission-setting—as an analytical heuristic to examine how legislative efforts operate as a coordinated political agenda. Drawing on critical policy analysis (CPA) and critical discourse analysis (CDA), the authors map selected legislative texts from 2021 to 2024 to demonstrate how Oklahoma lawmakers are using policy discourse to reshape higher education into an extension of state power, advancing white cisheteronormative logics. By framing these efforts as ideologically coherent rather than isolated, this analysis contributes to the urgent work of identifying and resisting the restructuring of public education against 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted higher education worldwide, imposing strict isolation measures, transitioning learning online, and exacerbating existing social and economic inequalities. This literature review examines the pandemic’s impact on the mental health of college students, with a focus on those belonging to minority groups, including racial, ethnic, migrant, gender, sexuality-based, and low-income populations. While elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness were observed across all students, findings indicate that LGBTQ+ and low-income students faced the highest levels of psychological distress, due to compounded stressors such as family rejection, unsafe home environments, and financial insecurity. Racial and ethnic minority students reported increased experiences of discrimination and reduced access to culturally competent mental healthcare. International and migrant students were disproportionately affected by travel restrictions, legal uncertainties, and social disconnection. These disparities underscore the need for higher education institutions to implement targeted, inclusive mental health policies that account for the unique needs of at-risk student populations during health crises. The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated lockdowns had widespread psycho-social implications globally. However, the unique experiences of young adults in under-researched rural communities, such as Lonely Park in South Africa’s North West Province, remain poorly documented. This study explores the psycho-social well-being of young adults aged 18–24 in the Lonely Park community during the national COVID-19 lockdown from 23 March 2020 to 30 April 2020, with a particular focus on their emotional, psychological, and social experiences. Using a qualitative, phenomenological design rooted in Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory (EST), data were collected from 14 purposively sampled participants through two focus group discussions. Thematic analysis was conducted following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee, and participants provided informed consent. Two main themes emerged, (1) psychological and (2) social well-being. Six sub-themes were identified: (1) negative emotions linked to lockdown, (2) fear of COVID-19 and its consequences, (3) rumination and anxiety, (4) disruption of social and educational routines, (5) coping strategies, and (6) structural limitations of healthcare and support systems. Participants experienced intense fear, boredom, isolation, and a sense of helplessness. Yet, coping mechanisms such as communication, spirituality, exercise, and adherence to public health regulations provided resilience. Some reported depression and financial strain due to job loss and school disruptions. The findings highlight the complex interplay of psychological, emotional, and social stressors in rural young adults during the pandemic. Policymakers and mental health practitioners must prioritise targeted psycho-social interventions for youth in under-resourced rural settings. A call is made for culturally responsive mental health programmes that incorporate local voices, especially in rural African contexts. Full article

The purpose of this study was to explore the role of kinship-based control, which serves as a mechanism of labour exploitation among Bangladeshi migrant workers in manufacturing and labour-intensive sectors in the Northern Emirates. The current study explores different case studies regarding participants dominated by familial control mechanisms that lead to Bangladeshi migrant workers finding themselves in vulnerable situations. This study incorporated an ethnographic research method. Data was gathered through participant observation, document analysis, and semi-structured interviews. The study includes different participant cases, including accounts from Bangladeshi migrant workers and their family members. In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of twelve participants to understand the experiences of Bangladeshi migrant workers and analyzed using a thematic approach. The findings of this study reveal six major themes: moral blackmail, isolation within the family, moral obligation and silence, familial control structures, abuse framed as duty, and informal hierarchies. This study shows that the existing labour mechanism is challenging for Bangladeshi workers, requiring strict attention from the host country to address challenges related to cultural obligations, the minimum wage, restricted movement, and harsh working conditions. It is implied that Bangladesh must make policy changes to create protective migration policies, establish worker independence, and provide pre-departure welfare programmes. Educational programmes developed by NGOs and public officials must include widespread awareness initiatives to heighten the focus on migrants and their family members and break unsustainable cultural standards. The novel aspect of this study lies in the fact that it explores family-based labour exploitation, which is rarely studied in migration research. Full article

Numerous studies have demonstrated that appropriate use of daylight in educational spaces significantly enhances students’ health and academic performance. However, classrooms in Tehran still suffer from considerable daylighting challenges. In many cases, desks near windows are exposed to excessive brightness, while areas farther from the windows lack adequate illumination. This often leads to the use of curtains and artificial lighting, resulting in higher energy consumption and potential negative impacts on student learning. Light shelf systems have been proposed as effective daylighting solutions to improve light penetration and distribution. According to previous research, three key parameters—geometry, depth, and surface reflectance—play a critical role in the performance of light shelves. However, prior studies have typically focused on improving one or two of these parameters in isolation. There is a lack of research evaluating all three parameters simultaneously to determine season-specific configurations for optimal performance. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates the combined effects of light shelf geometry, depth, and reflectance across different seasons and proposes a system that dynamically adapts these parameters throughout the year. In winter, the system also integrates photovoltaic panels to reduce glare and generate electricity for its operation. Simulation results indicate that the proposed system leads to a 21% improvement in Useful Daylight Illuminance (UDI), a 65% increase in thermal comfort, and a 10% annual reduction in energy consumption. These findings highlight the potential of the proposed system as a practical and energy-efficient daylighting strategy for educational buildings in sunny regions such as Tehran. Full article
