Ride-pooling, as a sustainable mode of ride-hailing services, enables different riders to share a vehicle while traveling along similar routes. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the suspension of this service, but Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) such as Uber and Lyft resumed it after a significant delay following the lockdown. This raises the question of what determinants shape ride-pooling in the post-pandemic era and how they spatially influence shared ride-hailing compared to the pre-pandemic period. To address this gap, this study employs geospatial analysis and machine learning to examine the factors affecting ride-pooling trips in pre- and post-pandemic periods. Using over 66 million trip records from 2019 and 43 million from 2023, we observe a significant decline in shared trip adoption, from 16% to 2.91%. The results of an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model indicate a robust capture of non-linear relationships. The SHAP analysis reveals that the percentage of the non-white population is the dominant predictor in both years, although its influence weakened post-pandemic, with a breakpoint shift from 78% to 90%, suggesting reduced sharing in mid-range minority areas. Crime density and lower car ownership consistently correlate with higher sharing rates, while dense, transit-rich areas exhibit diminished reliance on shared trips. Our findings underscore the critical need to enhance transportation integration in underserved communities. Concurrently, they highlight the importance of encouraging shared ride adoption in well-served, high-demand areas where solo ride-hailing is prevalent. We believe these results can directly inform policies that foster more equitable, cost-effective, and sustainable shared mobility systems in the post-pandemic landscape. Full article

This study proposes an optimized footprint recognition model based on an enhanced StarNet architecture for biometric identification in the security, medical, and criminal investigation fields. Conventional image recognition algorithms exhibit limitations in processing barefoot footprint images characterized by concentrated feature distributions and rich texture patterns. To address this, our framework integrates an improved StarNet into the backbone of YOLOv8 architecture. Leveraging the unique advantages of element-wise multiplication, the redesigned backbone efficiently maps inputs to a high-dimensional nonlinear feature space without increasing channel dimensions, achieving enhanced representational capacity with low computational latency. Subsequently, an Encoder layer facilitates feature interaction within the backbone through multi-scale feature fusion and attention mechanisms, effectively extracting rich semantic information while maintaining computational efficiency. In the feature fusion part, a feature modulation block processes multi-scale features by synergistically combining global and local information, thereby reducing redundant computations and decreasing both parameter count and computational complexity to achieve model lightweighting. Experimental evaluations on a proprietary barefoot footprint dataset demonstrate that the proposed model exhibits significant advantages in terms of parameter efficiency, recognition accuracy, and computational complexity. The number of parameters has been reduced by 0.73 million, further improving the model’s speed. Gflops has been reduced by 1.5, lowering the performance requirements for computational hardware during model deployment. Recognition accuracy has reached 99.5%, with further improvements in model precision. Future research will explore how to capture shoeprint images with complex backgrounds from shoes worn at crime scenes, aiming to further enhance the model’s recognition capabilities in more forensic scenarios. The presence of people has a complex relationship with public safety—while it is often associated with increased natural surveillance, it can also attract specific types of crime under certain urban conditions. This exploratory study examines this dual relationship by integrating Jane Jacobs’s urban theories and the principles derived from them in Quito, Ecuador. Anchored in Jacobs’s concept of “eyes on the street,” this research assesses four morphological dimensions—density, land use mixture, contact opportunity, and accessibility through nine specific indicators. A binary logistic regression model is used to examine how these features relate to the incidence of street robberies against individuals. The findings indicate that urban form characteristics that foster “eyes on the street”—such as higher population density and a mix of commercial and residential uses—show statistically significant associations with lower rates of street robbery. However, other indicators of “eyes on the street”—such as larger block sizes, proximity to public transport stations, greater street lighting, and a higher balance between residential and non-residential land uses—correlate with increased crime rates. Some indicators, such as population density, block size, and distance to public transport stations, show statistically significant relationships, though the practical effect size compared to residential/non-residential balance, commercial and facility mix, and street lighting is modest. These results underscore the importance of contextualizing Jacobs’s frameworks and offer a novel contribution to the literature by empirically testing morphological indicators promoting the presence of people against actual crime data. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has attracted extensive attention as a key technology to improve spectrum utilization and system performance for future wireless sensor networks. At the same time, active surveillance, as a legitimate means of surveillance, can improve the success rate of surveillance by sending interference signals to suspicious receivers, which is important for crime prevention and public safety. In this paper, we investigate the joint optimization of performance of both ISAC and active surveillance. Specifically, we formulate a bilevel optimization problem where the upper-level objective aims to maximize the probability of successful eavesdropping while the lower-level objective aims to optimize the localization performance of the radar on suspicious transmitters. By employing the Rayleigh quotient, introducing a decoupling strategy, and adding penalty terms, we propose an algorithm to solve the bilevel problem where the lower-level objective is convex. With the help of the proposed algorithm, we obtain the optimal solution of the analog transmit beamforming matrix and the digital beamforming vector. Performance analysis and discussion of key insights, such as the trade-off between eavesdropping success probability and radar localization accuracy, are also provided. Finally, comprehensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm in enhancing both the eavesdropping success probability and the accuracy of radar localization. Rape is typically committed as a one-on-one crime. However, a relatively high number of rapes (2–27%) involve a single victim and multiple perpetrators. These cases are often referred to as “gang” rapes but are also termed Multiple Perpetrator Rape (MPR). Despite these data, there is a scarce amount of legal decision-making research on this issue. This study investigated legal decision making in an acquaintance rape case involving multiple perpetrators. This study was a 2(Defendant Number: one vs. three) × 2(Victim Intoxication: intoxicated vs. sober) × 2(Participant Gender: women vs. men) between-participants design. Online community members (N = 171) were randomly assigned to read a trial summary involving one of four conditions. The primary results showed that, when the case involved multiple (vs. one) perpetrators, mock jurors were more likely to vote guilty, perceived the victim to be more helpless, and reported less sympathy for the defendant and lower defendant credibility. Cognitive networks showed that jurors in the MPR condition emphasized the number of perpetrators as a primary reason for voting guilty. Finally, there was evidence of a serial indirect effect involving victim helplessness and defendant blame that explained the relation between the number of defendants and verdicts, as well as parallel indirect effects of defendant credibility, sympathy, and anger, and victim helplessness on verdicts. Implications for prosecuting MPR cases are discussed. Full article

Background: The United States has the highest number of immigrants in the world, with over 46 million foreign-born residents as of 2022. A growing number of migrants originate from Latin America, driven by factors such as economic instability, food insecurity, and crime. This study explores their experiences and perceptions regarding trust in the criminal justice system (CJS) in both their home countries and the United States. Methods: This study surveyed 500 migrants at a transitional institution in a U.S.–Mexico border city in the summer of 2023. The survey assessed confidence in law enforcement, immigration officers, courts, and government institutions using a 5-point Likert scale. Results: Migrants reported significantly higher confidence in the U.S. CJS compared to that of their home countries. Multivariate analysis revealed that satisfaction with border officials, documentation status, English proficiency, and health were positively associated with confidence in the U.S. CJS, while employment status, traveling with family, and fear of crime correlated with lower confidence. Conclusions: This study highlights the stark contrast in migrants’ confidence levels between their home countries and the U.S. criminal justice system. While migrants view the U.S. system as more legitimate, challenges such as fear of crime and legal uncertainties persist. Full article

Despite the increase in the study of women and crimes committed by them, investigations continue to be scarce. Self-control and psychopathy have been widely studied in incarcerated populations, though more frequently in males than females. This study examines these psychological variables related to substance use history and violent crime in a sample of 94 incarcerated women in Portugal. Participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Self-Control Scale, and Levenson’s Self-Report Psychopathy Scale—VP. We found average self-control levels, with lower scores among participants with substance use. Significant differences in self-control emerged between women who committed homicide and those who did not. Psychopathy scores were above average, with significant differences in Factor 2 (impulsivity) between those who committed homicide and those who did not. Self-control and psychopathy were negatively associated, and psychopathy predicted self-control. These findings, which are not entirely consistent with the literature, challenge common assumptions about self-control, psychopathy, and crime, particularly in incarcerated women, and suggest that different mechanisms may drive violent and non-violent crimes in women. These results reinforce the need to consider gender-specific pathways to crime, highlighting the urgency of continuing to investigate the manifestation, in women, of widely studied variables in male samples. While commercially available lightweight “stab-proof” apparel exists, it offers little resistance to true stabbing as it is primarily designed to withstand slash attacks. Yet, crimes involving the use of a knife or sharp instrument have consistently been rising in the UK over several decades. For the most part, the various proposed solutions to stab-proofing are based on speciality textiles and while these have shown success in slash-proofing, their utility for stab-proofing is still somewhat of a misnomer. Nature showcases a plethora of puncture-resisting materials and structures. At the macro-scale, these include carapaces, egg cases, toughened skin, and more. One of the most effective protective mechanisms known comes through surface scaling, present on animals such as reptiles and fish. Scaled protective armours present in extant fish species include overlapping elasmoid scales, interlocking ganoid scales, placoid scales, tessellating carapace scutes, and interlocking plates. Here, we research overlapping and interlocking scaled structures to ascertain the stab penetration resistance of biomimetic scaled structures against continuum material to obtain the force–time relationship of the impact event as well as ascertaining the penetration depth. We use additive manufacturing methods to manufacture biomimetic armour made of nylon, a common protective artificial material used in slash-proofing textiles. Stab testing to the closely replicated HOSDB body armour standard 2017, we find that biomimetic scales made of nylon offer greater protection against direct stabbing than continuum nylon material sheets. This can be attributed to (a) the heightened flexibility in an interlocked fish scale structure that does not exist in a continuum sheet of the same material; (b) the effect of overlapping of the fish scales, resulting in a greater penetration depth requirement before the structure undergoes perforation; and (c) segmentation into smaller armour plates (of the same thickness) rather than continuum sheets provides a lower span-to-depth ratio, therefore leading to a smaller deflection of the plate upon impact and a greater deceleration and, hence, a greater impact force. While urban greening is an effective adaptation strategy for building resilient cities, socioeconomic factors and individual perceptions of urban parks play a significant role in enhancing their safety and inclusiveness. Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a widely recognized approach for enhancing safety in urban public spaces. However, existing research has largely overlooked the impact of socioeconomic factors and interpersonal needs on shaping perceptions of safety. Baitashan Park is Located in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, China. It is an iconic urban park with significant cultural and recreational value. Despite the park’s popularity, it faces challenges such as uneven accessibility, maintenance discrepancies, and perceived safety concerns, especially among users from the lower socioeconomic status (SES) group. This study examines how SES and interpersonal needs affect the relationship between CPTED principles and perceived safety. Our findings reveal that interpersonal needs significantly mediate the impact of CPTED on perceived safety, with SES playing a moderating role in both the direct and indirect effects. Specifically, the influence of CPTED on perceived safety through interpersonal needs is more pronounced for individuals with higher SES, while the direct effect of CPTED on perceived safety is also stronger for users with higher SES. These results suggest that the effectiveness of CPTED principles can be enhanced by considering the interplay between socioeconomic status and interpersonal dynamics. This study underscores the importance of adopting a holistic approach to urban park design, integrating environmental, social, and economic factors to promote safety, inclusivity, and well-being for all park users. Numerous studies have linked lower levels of serum cholesterol with heightened aggression, violent crimes, and violent deaths across diverse populations, including forensic psychiatric patients, criminals, and the broad public. Interestingly, this association appears to be more pronounced in men than in women. Conversely, findings regarding serum triglycerides present a more nuanced picture, with some studies indicating heightened aggression with elevated levels and others suggesting the opposite. However, most studies have neglected to examine this phenomenon in conjunction with psychological traits. Additionally, no prior research has explored the association between serum lipid levels and different types of aggression, e.g., reactive, instrumental, or appetitive. Considering these gaps, our study aimed to assess serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels upon clinic admission and correlate them with scores from the Appetitive and Facilitative Aggression Scale (AFAS), a self-rating questionnaire assessing reactive and appetitive aggression. We conducted our investigation on a cohort of 135 forensic psychiatric patients undergoing drug addiction treatment under Section 64 of the German Criminal Code. This provision offers a nearly unique opportunity worldwide for individuals who have committed crimes under the influence of drugs or in the context of their addiction to receive specialized treatment. Using non-linear Spearman correlation analyses, we observed an inverse relationship between serum concentrations of both cholesterol and triglycerides and AFAS appetitive violence scores but not for reactive aggression. Additionally, triglyceride levels exhibited an inverse association with the prevalence of violent crimes as an index crime. In conclusion, blood lipids may affect numerous areas of health and disease beyond what is currently known, offering a potential shift in how we understand their role in aggression. Full article

Colored textiles are valuable physical evidence often found at crime scenes. Analysis of the chemical structure of textiles could be used to establish a connection between fabric found at a crime scene and suspect cloths. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectroscopy coupled HPLC are traditionally used for the identification of dyes in fabric. However, these techniques are invasive and destructive. A growing body of evidence indicates that near-infrared excitation (λ = 830 nm) Raman spectroscopy (NIeRS) could be used to probe the chemical signature of such colorants. At the same time, it remains unclear whether environmental factors, such as solar light could lower the accuracy of NIeRS-based identification of dyes in textiles. In this study, we exposed cotton fabric colored with six different dyes to light and investigated the extent to which colorants fade during seven weeks using NIeRS. We found a decrease in the intensities of all vibrational bands in the acquired spectra as the time of the exposition of fabric to light increased. Nevertheless, utilization of partial least-squared discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) enabled identification of the colorants at all eight weeks. These results indicate that the effect of light exposure should be strongly considered by forensic experts upon the NIeRS-based analysis of colored fabric. Full article

This study examines the influence of local norm shifts driven by white supremacist ideology on hate crime reporting by US law enforcement agencies. Results show a substantial association, indicating a threefold increase in expected hate crimes reports in counties experiencing a spike in local hate group activity. Specifically, Republican vote share acts as a moderator, reducing reported hate crimes by 23% in counties with strong Republican support and right-wing hate group presence. Adjacent Republican counties also show a 13% reduction in expected reports, suggesting a spillover effect. Beyond local politics, a regional impact is evident; Northeastern counties with higher right-wing hate group presence show a 23% lower incidence rate. Using longitudinal data from the FBI UCR, SPLC, MIT Election Lab, and the US Census (2010–2020), through negative binomial regressions, this study highlights how right-wing hate groups can affect law enforcement’s enforcement of general civil rights depending on the local context. Crime victimization is one of the most stressful negative events and brings numerous adverse outcomes to victims. Victims suffer from physical damage, property loss, psychological trauma, and behavioral problems. Many studies have examined these adverse consequences of crime victimization, but a comprehensive approach for victims who are school-aged girls has been relatively under-documented. To fill the gap in the literature, this study analyzes data from a nationally representative sample of Korean school-aged girls (N = 3762). The results of the regression analyses indicate that previous victimization is associated with lower life satisfaction, increased negative emotions, and a fear of crime, and appears to elevate the risk of revictimization and delinquent behavior. It is concluded that victims should be treated with appropriate resources and support to reduce future adverse outcomes. Full article

Safety and crime prevention are significant concerns in both urban and rural areas. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) guidelines provide an architectural strategy to deter criminal activities by implementing strategic design plans, particularly through effective lighting schemes in urban settings. These measures aim to reduce the fear of crime and enhance the overall quality of life. Enhanced street lighting plays a crucial role in environmental crime prevention by lowering both actual crime rates and the perceived risk of criminal activity in built environments. Current recommendations emphasize installing lighting in poorly lit areas for safety; however, assessing road surface luminance solely based on existing streetlights is insufficient. The research underscores that well-illuminated streets with uniform lighting and higher illuminance levels enhance pedestrian safety and comfort. In addition, this study proposes standardized illumination levels specifically for outdoor facial recognition to aid in identifying potential offenders. It outlines the critical vertical illuminance range and Color Rendering Index (CRI) values necessary for this purpose. Furthermore, metrics like the Brightness Index and Safety Index were developed to enhance night-time security and illustrate their correlation with crime rates. Ultimately, this research introduces quantitative lighting standards to enhance the effectiveness of CPTED guidelines, contributing to efforts to reduce crime incidence. Full article

Alcohol consumption is a major social and forensic issue. It is often the cause of road accidents, industrial accidents, suicides and other crimes. On account of this, it is of fundamental importance in forensic toxicology to correctly quantify blood alcohol concentration (BAC). In this work, a straightforward method for the quantification of ethanol from blood samples by means of headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is presented and validated. For method validation linearity, limit of detection (LOD), lower limit of quantification (LLOQ), accuracy, precision (% CV) and interference studies were carried out. All the validation conditions were satisfied according to the acceptance criteria. Proof of applicability was performed on 50 real blood samples, showing that the method was effective. Full article
