Structure-Modulated Long-Period Fiber Gratings (SM-LPFGs) represent an advancement in fiber optic sensor technology, moving beyond traditional photosensitivity-based fabrication to achieve enhanced performance through the direct physical modification of the geometry of the fiber. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the primary fabrication techniques enabling this approach, including CO2 laser inscription, femtosecond laser micromachining, electric-arc discharge, chemical etching, and fusion tapering. The central focus of this work is the elucidation of the definitive structure–performance relationship, systematically detailing how engineered geometries such as helical profiles, micro-tapers, and asymmetric grooves unlock novel sensing capabilities. We demonstrate how these specific structures are strategically designed to induce circular birefringence for torsion measurement, enhance evanescent field interaction for ultra-sensitive refractive index detection, and create localized stress concentrations for high-resolution strain and vector bending sensing. Furthermore, the review surveys the practical implementation of these sensors in critical application domains, including structural health monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, and environmental sensing. Finally, we conclude by summarizing key achievements and identifying promising future research directions, such as the development of hybrid fabrication processes, the integration of machine learning for advanced signal demodulation, and the path towards industrial-scale production. Concentric circular gratings are diffractive optical elements useful for polarization-independent applications in photonics and plasmonics. They are usually fabricated using a low-throughput and expensive electron beam lithography technique. In this paper, concentric circular gratings with selectable pitch values were successfully manufactured on thin films of azobenzene molecular glass using a novel laser interference lithography technique utilizing Bessel beams generated by a combined lens–axicon configuration. This innovative approach offers enhanced scalability and a simplified manufacturing process on larger surface areas compared to the previously reported techniques. Furthermore, the plasmonic characteristics of these concentric circular gratings were investigated using conventional spectrometric techniques after transferring the nanostructured patterns from azobenzene to transparent gold/epoxy thin films. In addition, the real-time imaging of surface plasmon resonance colors transmitted from the concentric circular gratings was obtained using a 45-megapixel digital camera. The results demonstrated a strong correlation between the real-time photographic technique and the spectroscopy measurements, validating the efficacy and accuracy of this approach for the colorimetric studying of surface plasmon resonance responses in thin film photonics. In recent years, conjugated polymers have become the materials of choice to fabricate optoelectronic devices, owing to their properties of high absorbance, high quantum efficiency, and wide luminescence tuning ranges. The efficient feedback mechanism in the concentric ring resonator and its circularly symmetric periodic geometry combined with the broadband photoluminescence spectrum of the conjugated polymer can generate a highly coherent output beam. Here, the detailed design of the ultralow-threshold single-mode circular distributed feedback polymer laser is presented with combined fabrication processes such as electron beam lithography and the spin-coating technique. We observe from the extinction spectra of the circular gratings that the transverse electric mode shows no change with the increase of incident beam angle. The strong enhancement of the conjugated polymer photoluminescence spectra with the circular periodic resonator can reduce the lasing threshold about 19 µJ/cm2. A very thin polymer film of about 110 nm is achieved with the spin-coating technique. The thickness of the gain medium can support only the zero-order transverse electric lasing mode. We expect that such a low threshold lasing device can find application in optoelectronic devices. Full article

Camera parameters can’t be estimated accurately using traditional calibration methods if the camera is substantially defocused. To tackle this problem, an improved approach based on three phase-shifting circular grating (PCG) arrays is proposed in this paper. Rather than encoding the feature points into the intensity, the proposed method encodes the feature points into the phase distribution, which can be recovered precisely using phase-shifting methods. The PCG centers are extracted as feature points, which can be located accurately even if the images are severely blurred. Unlike the previous method which just uses a single circle, the proposed method uses a concentric circle to estimate the PCG center, such that the center can be located precisely. This paper also presents a sorting algorithm for the detected feature points automatically. Experiments with both synthetic and real images were carried out to validate the performance of the method. And the results show that the superiority of PCG arrays compared with the concentric circle array even under severe defocus. Full article

With diameter close to or below the wavelength of guided light and high index contrast between the fiber core and the surrounding, an optical microfiber shows a variety of interesting waveguiding properties, including widely tailorable optical confinement, evanescent fields and waveguide dispersion. Among various microfiber applications, optical sensing has been attracting increasing research interest due to its possibilities of realizing miniaturized fiber optic sensors with small footprint, high sensitivity, fast response, high flexibility and low optical power consumption. Here we review recent progress in microfiber optical sensors regarding their fabrication, waveguide properties and sensing applications. Typical microfiber-based sensing structures, including biconical tapers, optical gratings, circular cavities, Mach-Zehnder interferometers and functionally coated/doped microfibers, are summarized. Categorized by sensing structures, microfiber optical sensors for refractive index, concentration, temperature, humidity, strain and current measurement in gas or liquid environments are reviewed. Finally, we conclude with an outlook for challenges and opportunities of microfiber optical sensors. Full article
