Knowledge, Attitudes, and Biosecurity Practices Regarding African Swine Fever Among Small-Scale Pig Farmers in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Cambodia

African swine fever (ASF) is a transboundary viral disease that has heavily impacted Southeast Asia since its introduction in 2019. Smallholder pig production systems in Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (the Lao PDR), characterized by low biosecurity, free-ranging practices, and limited veterinary oversight, remain particularly vulnerable. To assess farmers’ awareness and practices regarding ASF, a knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) survey was implemented between March and September 2023 by Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières within the framework of the Biosecurity in Pig Farming (BIG) project. A total of 471 pig farmers, including 56% women, were interviewed across eight provinces using a standardized questionnaire (188 in Cambodia and 283 in the Lao PDR). Results showed that ASF awareness was generally high (92% in Cambodia, 66% in the Lao PDR), yet 15% of Cambodian and 30% of Lao respondents expressed doubts about the presence of ASF in their country. While recognition of ASF symptoms was moderate and positively correlated with farmers’ perceived capacity to identify the disease, knowledge of transmission pathways was low and often misaligned with perceptions. Airborne transmission was frequently cited as a risk, and the risks related to visitors and fomites were underestimated by more than 50% of the farmers. Implementation of biosecurity measures (BSM) was limited, with mean scores of 43% in Cambodia and 27% in the Lao PDR. Risky practices such as swill feeding, free-ranging, sharing of boars, traders, and inadequate carcass disposal remained widespread. Statistical analysis identified education level, herd size, knowledge, perceived risks, and perceived benefits of BSM as the main determinants of biosecurity implementation. Farmers with larger herds or stronger commercial orientation demonstrated higher biosecurity adoption, while misconceptions and knowledge gaps remained frequent among smallholder farmers. Strengthening awareness, promoting low-cost and feasible biosecurity practices, and integrating farmer-centred approaches are essential for reducing ASF transmission risks and improving the resilience of smallholder pig production systems in the region. African swine fever is a highly contagious and deadly disease of both domestic and wild pigs. In developing countries such as Ghana, the diagnosis and control of ASF are very challenging. In this paper, we discussed factors that account for ASF endemicity in many developing nations, with special focus on Ghana. We identified possible ASF spread via pig value chain through the transportation of live pigs across regions in Ghana. Major factors contributing to ASF spread in Ghana include lack of farmer compensation during ASF outbreaks, free range system of pig farming, porous country borders, lack of rapid on-site diagnostic test kits, unsafe sample collection and transportation to diagnostic laboratories, long diagnostic test turnaround, and improper carcass disposal. We also discuss available diagnostic options for ASF and their limitations. We propose a more holistic approach to ASF control in Ghana. These measures include applying a muti-sectoral approach, rehabilitation of inactive regional laboratories and expansion of services to six newly established regions, promoting point of care testing and developing and implementing farmer compensation plan during outbreaks. These proposed ASF control measures will provide field veterinarians with effective means to make informed decisions while awaiting laboratory confirmation of outbreaks. Full article

Rabies remains a significant public health and economic concern in Kazakhstan, particularly in rural livestock-farming communities. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) related to rabies among livestock farmers in the Aktobe and Oral regions of West Kazakhstan. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between April and August 2022, involving 688 randomly selected participants. The data were collected through structured interviews and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that 89% of respondents were aware of rabies, yet significant knowledge gaps existed regarding clinical signs, transmission, and prevention. While 87% recognized the importance of rabies vaccination in dogs, 81% were unaware of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for cattle, and 72% lacked knowledge of PrEP for humans. Awareness of the post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimen was significantly higher in the Aktobe region (p < 0.002). Attitudinal differences were observed, with the Oral region participants exhibiting more favorable perceptions of rabies control programs (p < 0.01). Additionally, the χ2 test revealed that the proportion of female respondents (p < 0.02), those with school-aged dependents (p < 0.003), respondents owning both exotic and indigenous cattle breeds (p < 0.002), and those possessing more than five cattle (p < 0.025) was statistically different in the Oral region. Practices such as free grazing, lack of protective equipment use, and improper carcass disposal were identified as potential risk factors for rabies transmission. This study highlights the need for targeted educational initiatives to improve rabies awareness and promote safer livestock management practices. Enhancing veterinary surveillance, strengthening community engagement, and expanding vaccination efforts could mitigate rabies transmission risks. Full article

Avian scavengers, particularly vultures, play a crucial role in ecosystem health by efficiently consuming carcasses, thereby reducing pathogen abundance and limiting disease transmission to wildlife, livestock, and humans. In addition to the indispensable role of vultures, they are a particularly threatened group of birds. This study investigates the environmental factors that optimize this ecosystem service by examining the scavenging dynamics of vultures and other species at deer carcasses in a hunting area in Sierra Madrona, Ciudad Real, Spain. Carcasses were placed in habitats with different vegetation densities (open vs. dense) and altitudes (high vs. low) and were monitored for 30 days using camera traps. Data on scavenger diversity, arrival times, and carcass persistence were analyzed using Bayesian multilevel models. Results reveal that vegetation density and altitude significantly influence vulture arrival times and carcass duration, with dense vegetation and low altitudes delaying scavenger access. These findings provide actionable insights for game management to enhance vulture conservation and improve both public and ecosystem health through timely and effective carcass removal. Full article

Searching for a low-cost soil amendment that can reduce the reliance on chemical fertilizers while maintaining crop yields is a vital issue to sustainable agricultural development. In this study, bio-organic matter derived from harmless disposal of livestock and poultry carcasses was used to discuss its potential for substitute chemical fertilizer. An incubation experiment was conducted by incorporating bio-organic matter into the soil at the rate of 0% (CK), 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 6% and 7% (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7) of soil mass to investigate the effects of bio-organic matter on soil physical properties and the nutrient release dynamics. A pot experiment was conducted with three treatments: 150 mg·kg−1 nitrogen from compound fertilizer (CK), 150 mg·kg−1 nitrogen from bio-organic matter (B1) and 300 mg·kg−1 nitrogen from bio-organic matter (B2), to evaluate the potential of bio-organic matter as a substitute for chemical fertilizers in influencing the yield and quality of Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.). Results showed that in the incubation experiment, bio-organic matter addition reduced soil bulk density of 1.5% to 8.9% and increased soil porosity by ranging from 1.5% to 10.9%. The soil physical properties were significantly improved when addition rates ≥ 4% (by soil mass). The interaction effects of addition rate and incubation time had a significant effect on soil nutrients. In the pot experiment, substitution of chemical fertilizer with bio-organic matter did not reduce the yield, and the increasing application rate of bio-organic matter led to significantly higher soluble protein, soluble sugar and total phenol content of vegetables. Additionally, nitrite content in the vegetables was slightly lower with bio-organic matter compared to that under CK. It is concluded that bio-organic matter derived from the harmless disposal of livestock and poultry carcasses is feasible; it has great potential to partially or entirely replace chemical fertilizers, thereby contributing to realizing chemical fertilizer reduction. This study aimed to establish an economical and rapid response system for carcass leachate leakage using a real-time groundwater monitoring system with sensors. In this work, four parameters, namely electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), and ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N), were monitored. Three actual livestock burial sites were selected as pilot areas and monitored for three years, from 2019 to 2021, using these four parameters. As a result of sensor quality control, the accuracy and precision range of the four parameters were found to be acceptable, within 75~125% and ±25%, respectively. When compared to the laboratory measurement value, the field measurement value recorded by the sensors was 1.1 times higher for EC, 1.6 times higher for Cl, and 2.5 times higher for NO3-N. The correlation analysis between the lab measurement and sensor measurement results showed that the EC had the highest correlation coefficient of 0.3837. Additionally, the factor extraction results showed that the EC showed a relatively significant correlation compared to the other parameters. In summary, based on the results of this study, EC may be considered a key sensor parameter for evaluating leachate leakage from groundwater near disposal sites. Full article

Whale mortality and strandings have increased in recent years, with deceased whales often brought to landfill. However, the disposal of whale remains offshore holds significant ecological importance and can be a culturally and ethically sensitive approach. Moreover, offshore disposal mitigates potential risks associated with onshore whale remains disposal, such as the spread of diseases and the logistical challenges of managing large carcasses. A challenge with offshore disposal is defining the best release location to avoid the remains drifting ashore or into shipping channels. Here we compared the drift model outputs using a drift forecast model (SARMAP) for a 14 m whale carcass that was moved offshore in southeast Queensland, Australia, and fitted with a satellite tracker over an observation period of 150 h until positioning signal ceased. The modelling was conducted using different ocean products (BLUElink, HYCOM, and Copernicus), which showed a good agreement with the tracked whale carcass, albeit with changing wind conditions and contrasting currents flowing northward along the coast and, further offshore, flowing south. This case study illustrated that wind was the foremost driver of carcass drift due to the surface area above the water surface. The drift forecast simulations allowed for a reliable prediction of the floating whale drift that can assist authorities with decision making. Offshore disposal of whale carcasses is a sustainable practice but requires good planning and scientific assessment. Full article

Taeniasis and cysticercosis are parasitic infections that affect humans and pigs. Their global distribution constitutes a serious public health issue with significant implications for pork production. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of porcine cysticercosis in backyard swine from 42 indigenous communities throughout Tuchín-Córdoba, Colombia. Between December 2020 and March 2021, free-range pigs (n = 442) were assessed using the ELISA cysticercosis Ag test; 85 pigs were examined through sublingual visual evaluation, and 4 slaughtered pig carcasses were subjected to standard operation inspection. The collected cysticercus underwent histological and PCR analysis. Furthermore, 192 surveys of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) were used to identify the factors that facilitate infection transmission. Serological investigation revealed that 9.7% (46/472) of the animals were positive for cysticerci Ag. Sublingual inspection identified cysticercus in 28.7% (25/87) of the animals, while PCR analysis indicated that cysticercus corresponded to the T. solium American/African genotype. The factors associated with T. solium infection in the pigs in the surveyed areas numbered 14. The majority are associated with factors that promote the active persistence of Taenia solium’s life cycle in an area, such as lack of environmental sanitation, a lack of coverage or care for drinking water and wastewater treatment services, and no solid waste disposal. Identifying and ensuring the inactivation of the African Swine Fever virus in deadstock is a gap in the swine industry’s knowledge and response capabilities. The results of our study demonstrate that ASFv in deadstock was inactivated using static aerated composting as the carcass disposal method. Replicated compost piles with whole market hogs and two different carbon sources were constructed. In-situ bags containing ASFv-infected spleen tissue were placed alongside each of the carcasses and throughout the pile. The bags were extracted at days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, 56, and 144 for ASFv detection and isolation. Real-time PCR results showed that DNA of ASFv was detected in all samples tested on day 28. The virus concentration identified through virus isolation was found to be below the detection limit by day 3 in rice hulls and by day 7 in sawdust. Given the slope of the decay, near-zero concentration with 99.9% confidence occurred at 5.0 days in rice hulls and at 6.4 days in sawdust. Additionally, the result of virus isolation also showed that the virus in bone marrow samples collected at 28 days was inactivated. Full article

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious swine disease with high mortality. In many countries, culling pigs infected and exposed to the ASF virus is mandatory to control the disease, which poses a real challenge in the disposal of large numbers of carcasses during ASF outbreaks. Shallow burial with carbon (SBC) Thanks ew mortality disposal method developed from deep burial and composting. The present study investigates the effectiveness of SBC in disposing of ASF virus-infected pigs. The real-time PCR results showed that DNA of the ASF virus was still detected in bone marrow samples on day 56, while the virus isolation test revealed that the infectious ASF virus was destroyed in both spleen and bone marrow samples on day 5. Interestingly, decomposition was found to occur rapidly in these shallow burial pits. On day 144, only large bones were found in the burial pit. In general, the results of this study indicated that SBC is a potential method for the disposal of ASF-infected carcasses; however, further studies are needed to provide more scientific evidence for the efficacy of SBC in different environment conditions. African swine fever (ASF) in domestic pigs has, since its discovery in Africa more than a century ago, been associated with subsistence pig keeping with low levels of biosecurity. Likewise, smallholder and backyard pig farming in resource-limited settings have been notably affected during the ongoing epidemic in Eastern Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Caribbean regions. Many challenges to managing ASF in such settings have been identified in the ongoing as well as previous epidemics. Consistent implementation of biosecurity at all nodes in the value chain remains most important for controlling and preventing ASF. Recent research from Asia, Africa, and Europe has provided science-based information that can be of value in overcoming some of the hurdles faced for implementing biosecurity in resource-limited contexts. In this narrative review we examine a selection of these studies elucidating innovative solutions such as shorter boiling times for inactivating ASF virus in swill, participatory planning of interventions for risk mitigation for ASF, better understanding of smallholder pig-keeper perceptions and constraints, modified culling, and safe alternatives for disposal of carcasses of pigs that have died of ASF. The aim of the review is to increase acceptance and implementation of science-based approaches that increase the feasibility of managing, and the possibility to prevent, ASF in resource-limited settings. This could contribute to protecting hundreds of thousands of livelihoods that depend upon pigs and enable small-scale pig production to reach its full potential for poverty alleviation and food security. African swine fever (ASF) continues to spread and persist in the Eurasian wild boar population. The infection pressure resulting from infected carcasses in the environment can be a major contributor to disease persistence and spread. For this reason, it is crucial to find a safe and efficient method of carcass disposal under different circumstances. In the presented study, we investigated open-air composting of carcasses under winter conditions in northeastern Europe, i.e., Lithuania. We can demonstrate that the ASF virus (ASFV) is inactivated in both entire wild boar carcasses and pieces thereof in a time- and temperature-dependent manner. Composting piles reached up to 59.0 °C, and ASFV was shown to be inactivated. However, the ASFV genome was still present until the end of the 112-day sampling period. While further studies are needed to explore potential risk factors (and their mitigation), such as destruction of composting piles by scavengers or harsh weather conditions, composting seems to present a valid method to inactivate the ASFV in wild boar carcasses where rendering or other disposal methods are not feasible. In summary, composting provides a new tool in our toolbox of ASF control in wild boar and can be considered for carcass disposal. Full article

Infectious animal diseases can cause severe mortality on infected farms. An outbreak challenges the system and forces difficult decisions to stop the disease progression. We propose an ‘all-in-one’ concept of a mobile system for on-farm swine depopulation and pathogen inactivation. The system uses vaporized CO2 followed by heat treatment, broadening options for off-site carcass disposal and cleanup. A direct-fired heater supplies heat into the insulated trailer to reach and maintain the inactivation temperature for targeted pathogens. We developed a user-friendly model based on engineering principles for estimating site- and scenario-specific CO2 amounts and times required to inactivate targeted pathogens. Multipoint CO2 injection and improved distribution to animals follow the plug-flow reactor air replacement model. The model illustrates the depopulation and inactivation of two diseases, African swine fever (ASF) and the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) viruses. The model allows for dump trailer size, pig number, weights, and environmental conditions input. Model outputs provide users with practical information about the required CO2 injection rate, temperature setpoints, and times to effectively depopulate and inactivate pathogens in carcasses. The concept could be adopted for a routine or a mass depopulation/treatment/disposal with a single or fleet of ‘all-in-one’ units. Full article

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the possibility of application of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in order to estimate pork quality. The BIA measurements were tested on 18 living animals for the prediction of the meat quality. The absolute resultant electrical resistance (Rz) and reactance (Xc) of the body was measured with a set of disposable surface electrodes at the frequency of 50 kHz and the current intensity of 400 µA. The characteristics of meat quality, pH measured 1 h and 24 h after slaughter, meat color parameters represented in CIE L*a*b* system, glycolytic potential, intramuscular fat, and natural drip loss, were assessed on the samples of the Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle. The slaughter value of pigs was characterized on the basis of hot carcass weight (HCW) and percent of meat in carcass. The results showed a significant Pearson correlation between bioelectrical impedance parameter Rz and pH1 (r = 0.48*, p < 0.05). A significant Spearman correlation was showed between color b* value and the Rz/Xc/HCW ratio (r = −0.62*, p < 0.05) and Xc (r = −0.51*, p < 0.05), as well as between the Rz/Xc ratio with pH1 (r = 0.48*, p < 0.05). The multivariate statistical method (principal component analysis and cluster analysis) showed that bioimpedance measurements combined with meat quality traits make it possible to distinguish groups with different quality parameters. Under experimental conditions, pigs infected with Ebola Virus (EBOV) develop disease and can readily transmit the virus to non-human primates or pigs. In the event of accidental or intentional EBOV infection of domestic pigs, complex and time-consuming safe depopulation and carcass disposal are expected. Delaying or preventing transmission through a reduction in viral shedding is an absolute necessity to limit the spread of the virus. In this study, we tested whether porcine interferon-α or λ3 (porIFNα or porIFNλ3) delivered by a replication-defective human type 5 adenovirus vector (Ad5-porIFNα or Ad5-porIFNλ3) could limit EBOV replication and shedding in domestic pigs. Our results show that pigs pre-treated with Ad5-porIFNα did not develop measurable clinical signs, did not shed virus RNA, and displayed strongly reduced viral RNA load in tissues. A microarray analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells indicated that Ad5-porIFNα treatment led to clear upregulation in immune and inflammatory responses probably involved in protection against disease. Our results indicate that administration of Ad5-porIFNα can potentially be used to limit the spread of EBOV in pigs. Full article
