Bayesian Denoising Algorithm for Low SNR Photon-Counting Lidar Data via Probabilistic Parameter Optimization Based on Signal and Noise Distribution

The Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 has provided unprecedented global surface elevation measurements through photon-counting Lidar (Light detection and ranging), yet its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) poses significant challenges for denoising algorithms. Existing methods, relying on fixed parameters, struggle to adapt to dynamic noise distribution in rugged mountain regions where signal and noise change rapidly. This study proposes an adaptive Bayesian denoising algorithm integrating minimum spanning tree (MST) -based slope estimation and probabilistic parameter optimization. First, a simulation framework based on ATL03 data generates point clouds with ground truth labels under varying SNRs, achieving correlation coefficients > 0.9 between simulated and measured distributions. The algorithm then extracts surface profiles via MST and coarse filtering, fits slopes with >0.9 correlation to reference data, and derives the probability distribution function (PDF) of neighborhood photon counts. Bayesian estimation dynamically selects optimal clustering parameters (search radius and threshold), achieving F-scores > 0.9 even at extremely low SNR (1 photon/10 MHz noise). Validation against three benchmark algorithms (OPTICS, quadtree, DRAGANN) on simulated and ATL03 datasets demonstrates superior performance in mountainous terrain, with precision and recall improvements of 10–20% under high noise conditions. This work provides a robust framework for adaptive parameter selection in low-SNR photon-counting Lidar applications. Full article

The density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) is able to cluster arbitrarily structured datasets. However, the clustering result of this algorithm is exceptionally sensitive to the neighborhood radius (Eps) and noise points, and it is hard to obtain the best result quickly and accurately with it. To address this issue, a parameter-adaptive DBSCAN clustering algorithm based on the Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA), referred to as SSA-DBSCAN, is proposed. This method leverages the local fast search ability of SSA, using the optimal number of clusters and the silhouette coefficient of the dataset as the objective functions to iteratively optimize and select the two input parameters of DBSCAN. This avoids the adverse impact of manually inputting parameters, enabling adaptive clustering with DBSCAN. Experiments on typical synthetic datasets, UCI (University of California, Irvine) real-world datasets, and image segmentation tasks have validated the effectiveness of the SSA-DBSCAN algorithm. Comparative analysis with DBSCAN and other related optimization algorithms demonstrates the clustering performance of SSA-DBSCAN. Full article

In this paper, we investigate the classical Axelrod model of cultural dissemination under an adaptive network framework. Unlike the original model, we place agents on a complex network, where they cut connections with any agent that does not share at least one cultural trait. This rewiring process alters the network topology, and key parameters—such as the number of traits, the neighborhood search range, and the degree-based preferential attachment exponent—also influence the distribution of cultural traits. Unlike conventional Axelrod models, our approach introduces a dynamic network structure where the rewiring mechanism allows agents to actively modify their social connections based on cultural similarity. This adaptation leads to network fragmentation or consolidation depending on the interaction among model parameters, offering a framework to study cultural homogeneity and diversity. The results show that, while long-range reconnections can promote more homogeneous clusters in certain conditions, variations in the local search radius and preferential attachment can lead to rich and sometimes counterintuitive dynamics. Extensive simulations demonstrate that this adaptive mechanism can either increase or decrease cultural diversity, depending on the interplay of network structure and cultural dissemination parameters. These findings have practical implications for understanding opinion dynamics and cultural polarization in social networks, particularly in digital environments where rewiring mechanisms are analogous to recommendation systems or user-driven connection adjustments. 3D object-detection based on LiDAR point clouds can help driverless vehicles detect obstacles. However, the existing point-cloud-based object-detection methods are generally ineffective in detecting small objects such as pedestrians and cyclists. Therefore, a small-object-detection algorithm based on clustering is proposed. Firstly, a new segmented ground-point clouds segmentation algorithm is proposed, which filters out the object point clouds according to the heuristic rules and realizes the ground segmentation by multi-region plane-fitting. Then, the small-object point cloud is clustered using an improved DBSCAN clustering algorithm. The K-means++ algorithm for pre-clustering is used, the neighborhood radius is adaptively adjusted according to the distance, and the core point search method of the original algorithm is improved. Finally, the detection of small objects is completed using the directional wraparound box model. After extensive experiments, it was shown that the precision and recall of our proposed ground-segmentation algorithm reached 91.86% and 92.70%, respectively, and the improved DBSCAN clustering algorithm improved the recall of pedestrians and cyclists by 15.89% and 9.50%, respectively. In addition, visualization experiments confirmed that our proposed small-object-detection algorithm based on the point-cloud clustering method can realize the accurate detection of small objects. The density-based spatial clustering of application with noise (DBSCAN) algorithm is able to cluster arbitrarily structured datasets. However, the clustering result of this algorithm is exceptionally sensitive to the neighborhood radius (Eps) and noise points, and it is hard to obtain the best result quickly and accurately with it. To solve the above problems, we propose an adaptive DBSCAN method based on the chameleon swarm algorithm (CSA-DBSCAN). First, we take the clustering evaluation index of the DBSCNA algorithm as the objective function and use the chameleon swarm algorithm (CSA) to iteratively optimize the evaluation index value of the DBSCAN algorithm to obtain the best Eps value and clustering result. Then, we introduce the theory of deviation in the data point spatial distance of the nearest neighbor search mechanism to assign the identified noise points, which solves the problem of over-identification of the algorithm noise points. Finally, we construct color image superpixel information to improve the CSA-DBSCAN algorithm’s performance regarding image segmentation. The simulation results of synthetic datasets, real-world datasets, and color images show that the CSA-DBSCAN algorithm can quickly find accurate clustering results and segment color images effectively. The CSA-DBSCAN algorithm has certain clustering effectiveness and practicality. Full article

For autonomous vehicles, obstacle detection results using 3D lidar are in the form of point clouds, and are unevenly distributed in space. Clustering is a common means for point cloud processing; however, improper selection of clustering thresholds can lead to under-segmentation or over-segmentation of point clouds, resulting in false detection or missed detection of obstacles. In order to solve these problems, a new obstacle detection method was required. Firstly, we applied a distance-based filter and a ground segmentation algorithm, to pre-process the original 3D point cloud. Secondly, we proposed an adaptive neighborhood search radius clustering algorithm, based on the analysis of the relationship between the clustering radius and point cloud spatial distribution, adopting the point cloud pitch angle and the horizontal angle resolution of the lidar, to determine the clustering threshold. Finally, an autonomous vehicle platform and the offline autonomous driving KITTI dataset were used to conduct multi-scene comparative experiments between the proposed method and a Euclidean clustering method. The multi-scene real vehicle experimental results showed that our method improved clustering accuracy by 6.94%, and the KITTI dataset experimental results showed that the F1 score increased by 0.0629. It is fundamental to acquire accurate point cloud information on rock discontinuities efficiently and comprehensively when evaluating the stability of rock masses. Taking a high and steep cliff as an example, we combined 3D laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry technology to collect rock data, and proposed an intelligent identification method for rock discontinuities based on the multi-source fusion of point clouds. First, the 3D-laser-collected point cloud data were used as the basis to fuse with the UAV-photogrammetry-collected data, and the unified coordinate system and improved ICP algorithm were used to obtain the complete 3D point cloud in the study area. Secondly, we used neighborhood information entropy to achieve adaptive neighborhood-scale selection and to obtain the optimal neighborhood radius for the KNN search, to effectively calculate the point cloud normal vector and rock mass orientation information. Finally, the KDE algorithm and DBSCAN algorithm were combined for rock discontinuity clustering to achieve intelligent identification and information extraction of the rock structural plane. The clustering results were imported into the DSE program developed based on Matlab to calculate the discontinuity spacing and continuity of the rock mass structure, and to efficiently obtain the parameters of rock mass occurrence. The research results showed that this method can effectively solve the problem of incomplete-data-acquisition ground 3D laser scanning in complex geological conditions, and UAV photogrammetry prone to blurred images in depressed areas. When the extraction results were compared with the field-measured rock occurrence, the average dip angle error was about 2°, the average dip direction error was 1°, and the recognition results met the accuracy requirements. The research results provide a feasible scheme for the identification and extraction of discontinuities of high and steep rock masses. Full article
