Abstract
Quasi-static and dynamic tensile tests on aluminum-hydroxide-enhanced ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) coatings were conducted using a universal testing machine and a Split Hopkinson Tension Bar (SHTB) over a strain rate range of 10−3 to 103 s−1. This comprehensive [...] Read more.
This comprehensive study explored the tensile performance of enhanced EPDM coatings in solid rocket motors. The results demonstrated a significant impact of strain rate on the mechanical properties of EPDM coatings. To capture the hyperelastic and viscoelastic characteristics of EPDM coatings at large strains, the Ogden hyperelastic model was used to replace the standard elastic component to develop an enhanced Zhu–Wang–Tang (ZWT) nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model. The model parameters were fitted using a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The improved constitutive model’s predictions closely matched the experimental data, accurately capturing stress–strain responses and inflection points. It effectively predicts the tensile behavior of aluminum-hydroxide-enhanced EPDM coatings within a 20% strain range and a wide strain rate range. Full article

It has been found that the mechanic–electric response of cement-based piezoelectric composites under impact loading is nonlinear. Herein, we prepared a 2-2 cement-based piezoelectric composite material using cutting, pouring, and re-cutting. Then, we obtained the stress–strain and stress–electric displacement curves for this piezoelectric composite under impact loading using a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experimental apparatus and an additional electrical output measurement system. Based on the micromechanics of the composite materials, we assumed that damage occurred only in the cement paste. The mechanical response relationship of the piezoelectric composite was calculated as the product of the viscoelastic constitutive relationship of the cement paste and a constant, where the constant was determined based on the reinforcement properties of the mechanical response of the piezoelectric composite. Using a modified nonlinear viscoelastic Zhu–Wang–Tang (ZWT) model, we characterized the stress–strain curves of the piezoelectric composite with different strain rates. The dynamic sensitivity and stress threshold of the linear response of the samples were calibrated and fitted. Thus, a mechanic–electric response equation was established for the 2-2 type cement-based piezoelectric composite considering the strain rate effects. Full article

In this study, a series of optically transparent metallized acrylics containing Gd and Pb were synthesized by the bulk polymerization of Gd(MAA)3, Pb(MAA)2 and AM according to different polymerization procedures. The variation of their optic transmittance and mechanical performance with Gd contents was investigated. Then, quasi-static uniaxial tensile tests under different strain rates and temperatures were performed to study the influence of strain rate and temperature on the mechanical properties of radiation-shielding metallized acrylic containing both Gd and Pb. The tensile responses of this material distinctly exhibit nonlinear characteristics and strongly depend on both temperature and strain rate. Based on the experimental results, a modified Zhu–Wang–Tang (ZWT) constitutive model, in which the standard elastic component was replaced by the Mooney–Rivlin hyperelastic model, was implemented to characterize the observed both hyperelastic and viscoelastic behaviors. The constitutive parameters were expressed as functions of temperature and determined by experimental data. The model fitting results indicate that the selected constitutive model can accurately describe the nonlinear tensile stress–strain responses of metallized acrylic containing Gd and Pb. Furthermore, the great difference in constitutive parameters implies that the viscoelastic behavior of the as-prepared metallized acrylic affects the response to quasi-static tensile loading the most. In order to explore the impact compression performance of aluminum oxide fiber concrete, the impact compression test of aluminum oxide fiber concrete with different contents is carried out by using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) comprehensive test system with a diameter of 100 mm. Our intent was to explore the influence law of different contents of aluminum oxide fiber on the impact compression performance of concrete matrixes, and to optimize and establish a constitutive model based on damage theory and stress residue. The results show that adding alumina short-cut fiber to concrete changes its mechanical properties of impact compression to a certain extent. When the volume content of fiber is 0.2%, the characteristics of strength, deformation, and energy are the best, and the excess aluminum oxide fiber reduces the original performance due to agglomeration and other factors; the strength characteristics, peak deformation characteristics, and energy characteristics of aluminum oxide fiber concrete are significantly affected by strain rate and impact velocity. Based on the Zhu-Wang-Tang non-linear viscoelastic model (ZWT model), the complexity coefficient is optimized and the residual stress term is added to construct the prediction model of aluminum oxide fiber concrete. The parameters in the model have a good prediction effect on the stress-strain curve under different strain rates. Full article

Quasi-static and dynamic compression experiments were performed to study the influence of liquid nitrile rubber (LNBR) on the mechanical properties of epoxy resin. The quasi-static experiments were conducted by an electronic universal machine under strain rates of 0.0001/s and 0.001/s, while a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system was adopted to perform the dynamic tests for strain rates up to 5600/s. The standard Zhu-Wang-Tang (ZWT) nonlinear viscoelastic model was chosen to predict the elastic behavior of LNBR/epoxy composites under a wide range of strain rates. After some necessary derivation and data fitting, a set of model parameters for the tested materials were finally obtained. Meanwhile, the incremented form of the ZWT nonlinear viscoelastic model were deduced and implemented into the user material program of LS-DYNA. A simulation-test contrast had been performed to verify the validity and feasibility of the algorithm. The results showed that the viscoelastic behavior of epoxy resin can be effectively simulated.
