The processing of fishery products generates a substantial amount of by-products, which can be utilized to promote a circular economy. The objective of the present study was to extract and characterize native collagen and total lipid extract from the fish skin and bones of crevalle jack (Caranx hippos). Physicochemical, structural, and morphological properties were evaluated for collagens. Chemical composition and functional properties were evaluated for lipid extracts. Native type I collagens were obtained by acid extraction, yielding approximately 2.64–6.16% (d.b.). The elemental chemical analysis showed its purity. The stability of the triple helix of collagen was verified through characteristic bands in the FTIR and UV spectra, the peaks at 2θ, around 7.5° and 19.5° obtained by XRD, and the bands of SDS-PAGE. Collagens show isoelectric points of 4.94 (skin) and 4.90 (bone), thermal stabilities of 53.40 °C (skin) and 46.88 °C (bone), and the percentage surface porosities of 41.28 (skin) and 38.84 (bone), all of which demonstrate their potential as a raw material in the biomedical field. The total lipids obtained were extracted using the Soxhlet and Folch methods. The extracts show EPA (1.26–3.16%) and DHA (3.94–9.78%) contents, with inhibition percentages of 32.7% (ABTS), 19.6% (DPPH), and 70.83% (β-carotene). These results highlight the potential of total lipid extract for nutraceutical and food applications. Full article

Color serves as a crucial visual signal for attracting pollinating insects and directly affects the fruit set rate in woody crops. This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying flower color formation in macadamia. The results demonstrated that darker flower colors were associated with higher fruit set rates: the rates for purple, pink, pinkish-white, and white flowers were 2.78, 1.99, 1.35, and 1.31, respectively. High-throughput sequencing identified 1359 differentially accumulated metabolites, including benzoic acid, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and isorhamnetin. Transcriptional regulators such as ERF, MYB, and WRKY were significantly up-regulated in darker flowers. KEGG analysis revealed two key metabolic pathways, in which genes including HCT (shikimate hydroxycinnamoyl transferase) and F3GalTase (flavonol 3-O-galactosyltransferase), as well as related metabolites such as p-coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, and myricetin, showed higher expression levels in darker flowers. Anthocyanin content was highest in pink and pinkish-purple varieties (462.79 and 446.35 μg/g, respectively), and lower in white and light pink varieties (140.52 and 167.97 μg/g). In conclusion, flower color intensity is positively correlated with both fruit set rate and anthocyanin content. Genes involved in the flavonoid and phenylpropanoid pathways, along with transcription factors such as WRKY and MYB, collectively regulate flower color formation. This study provides a theoretical basis for macadamia flower color breeding. Full article

The Internet of Things (IoT) has enabled a vast network of devices to communicate over the Internet. However, the fragmentation of IoT systems continues to hinder seamless data sharing and coordinated management across platforms.However, there is currently no actual search engine for IoT data. Existing IoT search engines are considered device discovery tools, providing only metadata about devices rather than enabling access to IoT application data. While efforts such as IoTCrawler have striven to support IoT application data, they have largely failed due to the fragmentation of IoT systems and the heterogeneity of IoT data.To address this, we recently introduced SensorsConnect—a unified framework designed to facilitate interoperable content and sensor data sharing among collaborative IoT systems, inspired by how the World Wide Web (WWW) enabled shared and accessible information spaces for humans. This paper presents the IoT Agentic Search Engine (IoTASE), a real-time semantic search engine tailored specifically for IoT environments. IoTASE leverages LLMs and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques to address the challenges of navigating and searching vast, heterogeneous streams of real-time IoT data. This approach enables the system to process complex natural language queries and return accurate, contextually relevant results in real time. To evaluate its effectiveness, we implemented a hypothetical deployment in the Toronto region, simulating a realistic urban environment using a dataset composed of 500 services and over 37,000 IoT-like data entries. Our evaluation shows that IoT-ASE achieved 92% accuracy in retrieving intent-aligned services and consistently generated concise, relevant, and preference-aware responses, outperforming generalized outputs produced by systems such as Gemini. These results underscore the potential of IoT-ASE to make real-time IoT data both accessible and actionable, supporting intelligent decision-making across diverse application domains. Full article

The emergence of a charge density wave (CDW) in transition-metal dichalcogenides opens up a route to charge order, followed by superconductivity at low temperatures. A key question here concerns how many particle electron–electron interations govern the low-energy electronic structure in the normal and CDW states. Using dynamical mean-field theory, we explore the many-body properties of an extended, two-band Hubbard model applicable to 2H-TaSe2. We reveal the electronic structure reconstruction in the normal and CDW states driven by two-band dynamical correlations. Our results demonstrate a remarkable renormalization of the Ta-5d bands crossing the Fermi level, showing a continuous reduction in the CDW gap up to an incomplete gapping, followed by a CDW to a CDW–Mott phase transition pertinent to strongly correlated transition-metal dichalcogenides. Materials exhibiting charge density waves are attracting increasing attention owing to their complex physics and potential for applications. In this paper, we present a computational, first principles-based study of the Janus monolayer of 1T-TaSSe transition metal dichalcogenide. We extensively compare the results with those obtained for parent compounds, TaS2 and TaSe2 monolayers, with confirmed presence of 13×13 charge density waves. The structural and electronic properties of the normal (undistorted) phase and distorted phase with 13×13 periodic lattice distortion are discussed. In particular, for a normal phase, the emergence of dipolar moment due to symmetry breaking is demonstrated, and its sensitivity to an external electric field perpendicular to the monolayer is investigated. Moreover, the appearance of imaginary energy phonon modes suggesting structural instability is shown. For the distorted phase, we predict the presence of a flat, weakly dispersive band related to the appearance of charge density waves, similar to the one observed in parent compounds. The results suggest a novel platform for studying charge density waves in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides. Full article

The problem addressed in this study is the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism economies of Kosovo (KOS) and Albania (AL), which led to economic–financial stagnation and price increases. The aim was to analyze the financial frontier challenges facing the tourism industry during COVID-19 and beyond and propose effective strategies for shaping a sustainable future for countries within Europe with great potential for tourism development in the current decade. The survey was conducted in 102 locations, including cities, municipalities, regions, villages, and neighborhoods in both countries over the years 2020–2023, while data analysis was performed using a cluster analysis (K-means and hierarchical) and the multidimensional scaling method (Alscal). The results highlighted (a) the severe impact of COVID-19 on both the population and businesses in the tourism sector, which will persist beyond the pandemic, (b) the indispensable role of government intervention in alleviating the financial crisis, (c) the need for innovative approaches and accurate financial management by both the country and businesses to attract tourists, and (d) the importance of control and management for financial sustainability. This paper is of significant importance to tourism destinations as it provides insights into the severe impact of COVID-19 on both the population and businesses in the tourism economies. By highlighting the indispensable role of government intervention, the need for innovative approaches and accurate financial management, and the importance of control and management for financial sustainability, the study offers valuable guidance for tourism destinations in navigating the current crisis and attracting tourists. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the need for future studies to explore opportunities for long-term financial resilience and growth, contributing to the development of sustainable tourism destinations. This study introduces a novel approach for fabricating ZnS/Al2O3/TaSe2 heterostructured core/shell nanowires (NWs) through the selenization of a metallic Ta thin film precursor. The synthesis process involves a meticulously designed four-step protocol: (1) generating ZnS NWs on an oxidized silicon substrate, (2) encapsulating these NWs with a precisely controlled thin Al2O3 layer via atomic layer deposition (ALD), (3) applying a Ta precursor layer by magnetron sputtering, and (4) annealing in a Se-rich environment in a vacuum-sealed quartz ampoule to transform the Ta layer into TaSe2, resulting in the final core/shell structure. The characterization of the newly produced NWs using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was validated using the integrity and composition of the heterostructures. Our method not only establishes a new pathway for the synthesis of TaSe2-based core/shell NWs but also extends the potential for creating a variety of core/shell NW systems with chalcogenide shells by adapting the thin film metal precursor approach. This versatility opens the way for future advancements in nanoscale material applications, particularly in electronics and optoelectronics where core/shell geometries are increasingly important. Reviving the neuronal functions in neurodegenerative disorders requires the promotion of neurite outgrowth. Thymol, which is a principal component of Trachyspermum ammi seed extract (TASE), is reported to have neuroprotective effects. However, the effects of thymol and TASE on neuronal differentiation and outgrowth are yet to be studied. This study is the first report investigating the neuronal growth and maturation effects of TASE and thymol. Pregnant mice were orally supplemented with TASE (250 and 500 mg/kg), thymol (50 and 100 mg/kg), vehicle, and positive controls. The supplementation significantly upregulated the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and early neuritogenesis markers in the pups’ brains at post-natal day 1 (P1). Similarly, the BDNF level was significantly upregulated in the P12 pups’ brains. Furthermore, TASE (75 and 100 µg/mL) and thymol (10 and 20 µM) enhanced the neuronal polarity, early neurite arborization, and maturation of hippocampal neurons in a dose-dependent manner in primary hippocampal cultures. The stimulatory activities of TASE and thymol on neurite extension involved TrkB signaling, as evidenced by attenuation via ANA-12 (5 µM), which is a specific TrkB inhibitor. Moreover, TASE and thymol rescued the nocodazole-induced blunted neurite extension in primary hippocampal cultures, suggesting their role as a potent microtubule stabilizing agent. These findings demonstrate the potent capacities of TASE and thymol in promoting neuronal development and reconstruction of neuronal circuitry, which are often compromised in neurodegenerative diseases and acute brain injuries. It is difficult to obtain high-protein contents from rice straw using direct fermentation due to its low nitrogen content. This study investigates the effects of ammonification–steam explosion pretreatment of rice straw on the protein content after solid-state fermentation (SSF). The pretreatment is carried out under multi-strain inoculation conditions. The samples of rice straw after ammonification (TA), steam explosion (TSE), and ammonification and steam explosion (TA-SE) were compared to the control group (TC). The results indicate that both ammonification and steam explosion could disintegrate rice straw’s lignocellulosic structure, releasing nutrients that can be used for microbial reproduction. In addition, amino compounds are formed along with depolymerization products, thus effectively promoting the true protein content. Post-fermentation, total crude protein contents of TA, TSE, and TA-SE samples were 2.56, 1.83, and 4.37 times higher than that of Tc samples, respectively, and true protein contents were 2.52, 1.83, and 5.03 times higher. This study shows that the true protein content by combined ammonification and steam explosion pretreatment of rice straw during 96 h of solid-state fermentation was 46.7% of its total matter, rendering it a suitable alternative to high-protein animal feed. Garlic (Allium sativum) has historically been associated with antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and microbiocidal properties, mainly due to its richness in thiosulfates and sulfur-containing phytoconstituents. Sepsis patients could benefit from these properties because it involves both inflammatory and refractory processes. We evaluated the effects of thiosulfinate-enriched Allium sativum extract (TASE) on the immune response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) by monocytes from healthy volunteers (HVs) and patients with sepsis. We also explored the TASE effects in HIF-1α, described as the key transcription factor leading to endotoxin tolerance in sepsis monocytes through IRAK-M expression. Our results showed TASE reduced the LPS-triggered reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in monocytes from both patients with sepsis and HVs. Moreover, this extract significantly reduced tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6 production in LPS-stimulated monocytes from HVs. However, TASE enhanced the inflammatory response in monocytes from patients with sepsis along with increased expression of human leukocyte antigen-DR. Curiously, these dual effects of TASE on immune response were also found when the HV cohort was divided into low- and high-LPS responders. Although TASE enhanced TNFα production in the LPS-low responders, it decreased the inflammatory response in the LPS-high responders. Furthermore, TASE decreased the HIF-1α pathway-associated genes IRAK-M, VEGFA and PD-L1 in sepsis cells, suggesting HIF-1α inhibition by TASE leads to higher cytokine production in these cells as a consequence of IRAK-M downregulation. The suppression of this pathway by TASE was confirmed in vitro with the prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor dimethyloxalylglycine. Our data revealed TASE’s dual effect on monocyte response according to status/phenotype and suggested the HIF-1α suppression as the possible underlying mechanism. Full article

To date, there have been no new drugs or adjuvants able to decrease both morbidity and mortality in the context of sepsis and septic shock. Our objective was to evaluate the use of thiosulfinate-enriched Allium sativum and black garlic extracts as adjuvants in the management of sepsis. An experimental in vivo study was carried out with male Sprague–Dawley® rats. Animals were randomized in four treatment groups: antibiotic (ceftriaxone) treatment (group I), ceftriaxone plus thiosulfinate-enriched extract (TASE, group II), ceftriaxone plus thiosulfinate-enriched extract and black garlic extracts (TASE + BGE, group III), and ceftriaxone plus black garlic extract (BGE, group IV). All animals were housed and inoculated with 1 × 1010 CFU/15 mL of intraperitoneal Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. Subsequently, they received a daily treatment according to each group for 7 days. Clinical, analytical, microbiological, and histopathological parameters were evaluated. Statistically significant clinical improvement was observed in rats receiving garlic extracts in weight (groups II and III), ocular secretions, and piloerection (group IV). Moreover, less liver edema, vacuolization, and inflammation were observed in groups receiving adjuvant support (groups II, III, and IV). When comparing interleukins 24 h after bacteria inoculum, we found statistically significant differences in TNF-alpha levels in groups receiving BGE (groups III and IV, p ≤ 0.05). Blood and peritoneal liquid cultures were also analyzed, and we detected a certain level of Enterococcus faecalis in peritoneal cultures from all treatment groups and less bacteria presence in blood cultures in rats receiving garlic extracts (groups II, III, and IV). In conclusion, TASE and BGE could be promising nutraceutical or medicinal agents as coadjuvants in the treatment of sepsis because of its effects in modulating the inflammatory response. Full article

Therefore, for sustainable economic and financial growth and well-planned development, public and private investments should be directed to areas of priority tourism development. Research on the effect of perceptions on the behavior of tourists in these two countries has not been carried out before, thus, the purpose of this research is to determine whether the effects of the perception of tourists has an impact on economic and financial development based on factors (F1 (f.1.1 and f.1.2) and F2 (f.2.1 and f. 2.2)). For this study, the data were provided by respondents from several cities in Albania and Kosovo. A total of 1002 questionnaires divided into three sessions were analyzed using factor analysis, data reliability analysis, and multiple regression analysis. All analyses were performed using SPSS version 23.0 for Windows. In this case, 23 variables were tested and divided into two factors and five sub-factors. The results showed that special attention should be paid to the following factors: (a) awareness of tourists of facilities in tourist destinations where they would like to visit; (b) greater knowledge of foreign languages for residents of both countries, which could facilitate communication with tourists during purchases or other requests; (c) attracting new investors and the creation by the government bodies of conditions and security for both investors and tourists; (d) supporting the marketing and sale of local products for tourists; (e) the need for infrastructure support from government bodies in both countries in order to increase economic and financial well-being through tourism; (f) the need to implement strategies focusing on the sustainable development of both countries through tourism should be strengthened; (g) in terms of sustainable development and regional competitiveness, Kosovo and Albania should follow development trends and be competitive with other countries in the region. The implications of this paper relate only to certain studied variables, and only in certain cities of Albania and Kosovo. In case of future analysis by different researchers, other variables can be analyzed for different locales by making comparisons with the presented data. Full article

Wake-up word spotting in noisy environments is a critical task for an excellent user experience with voice assistants. Unwanted activation of the device is often due to the presence of noises coming from background conversations, TVs, or other domestic appliances. In this work, we propose the use of a speech enhancement convolutional autoencoder, coupled with on-device keyword spotting, aimed at improving the trigger word detection in noisy environments. The end-to-end system learns by optimizing a linear combination of losses: a reconstruction-based loss, both at the log-mel spectrogram and at the waveform level, as well as a specific task loss that accounts for the cross-entropy error reported along the keyword spotting detection. We experiment with several neural network classifiers and report that deeply coupling the speech enhancement together with a wake-up word detector, e.g., by jointly training them, significantly improves the performance in the noisiest conditions. Additionally, we introduce a new publicly available speech database recorded for the Telefónica’s voice assistant, Aura. The OK Aura Wake-up Word Dataset incorporates rich metadata, such as speaker demographics or room conditions, and comprises hard negative examples that were studiously selected to present different levels of phonetic similarity with respect to the trigger words “OK Aura”. Two-dimensional (2D) materials that exhibit charge density waves (CDWs)—spontaneous reorganization of their electrons into a periodic modulation—have generated many research endeavors in the hopes of employing their exotic properties for various quantum-based technologies. Early investigations surrounding CDWs were mostly focused on bulk materials. However, applications for quantum devices require few-layer materials to fully utilize the emergent phenomena. The CDW field has greatly expanded over the decades, warranting a focus on the computational efforts surrounding them specifically in 2D materials. In this review, we cover ground in the following relevant theory-driven subtopics for TaS2 and TaSe2: summary of general computational techniques and methods, resulting atomic structures, the effect of electron–phonon interaction of the Raman scattering modes, the effects of confinement and dimensionality on the CDW, and we end with a future outlook. Through understanding how the computational methods have enabled incredible advancements in quantum materials, one may anticipate the ever-expanding directions available for continued pursuit as the field brings us through the 21st century. Recent developments in massive machine-type communication (mMTC) scenarios have given rise to never-seen requirements, which triggered the Industry 4.0 revolution. The new scenarios bring even more pressure to comply with the reliability and communication security and enable flawless functionality of the critical infrastructure, e.g., smart grid infrastructure. We discuss typical network grid architecture, communication strategies, and methods for building scalable and high-speed data processing and storage platform. This paper focuses on the data transmissions using the sets of standards IEC 60870-6 (ICCP/TASE.2). The main goal is to introduce the TASE.2 traffic generator and the data collection back-end with the implemented load balancing functionality to understand the limits of current protocols used in the smart grids. To this end, the assessment framework enabling generating and collecting TASE.2 communication with long-term data storage providing high availability and load balancing capabilities was developed. The designed proof-of-concept supports complete cryptographic security and allows users to perform the complex testing and verification of the TASE.2 network nodes configuration. Implemented components were tested in a cloud-based Microsoft Azure environment in four geographically separated locations. The findings from the testing indicate the high performance and scalability of the proposed platform, allowing the proposed generator to be also used for high-speed load testing purposes. The load-balancing performance shows the CPU usage of the load-balancer below 15% while processing 5000 messages per second. This makes it possible to achieve up to a 7-fold improvement of performance resulting in processing up to 35,000 messages per second. Full article
