Pott’s Puffy Tumor (PPT) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of frontal sinusitis, characterized by subperiosteal abscess formation and frontal bone osteomyelitis. Although predominantly seen in adolescents, adult cases are increasingly recognized. Early diagnosis is essential to prevent severe orbital and intracranial sequelae. We present two patients with distinct clinical features: a 31-year-old female with chronic frontal sinusitis complicated by sequestrated bone extrusion through a cutaneous fistula, and a 16-year-old male with an acute presentation of subperiosteal abscess, nasal polyp-related obstruction of the osteomeatal complex (OMC), and orbital cellulitis. Both patients underwent combined surgical and medical management, including broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics, functional endoscopic sinus surgery, and external drainage. In the adult, necrotic bone was excised, and the anterior frontal wall was reconstructed with titanium mesh to restore sinus anatomy and drainage, while in the adolescent, early abscess drainage and polyp removal ensured frontal recess patency and prevented osteomyelitis. Postoperative follow-up demonstrated complete resolution without recurrence. These cases highlight that PPT can occur in both acute and chronic settings of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, emphasizing the importance of prompt imaging, multidisciplinary evaluation, and individualized surgical strategies to optimize outcomes and minimize life-threatening complications. This article examines quantum group symmetry using the Potts model. The transformation of the Potts model into a polynomial knot state on Kaufman square brackets is analyzed. It is shown how a dichromatic polynomial for a planar graph can be obtained using Temperley–Lieb operator algebra. The proposed work provides insight into the 74 knot-partition function of Takara Musubi using a strain factor that represents the particles in the lattice knots of the above-mentioned model. As far as theoretical physics is concerned, this statement provides a correct explanation of the connection between the Potts model and the similar square lattice of knot and link invariants. A super-diffusive Vicsek model is introduced in this paper that incorporates Levy flights with exponent α. The inclusion of this feature leads to an increase in the fluctuations of the order parameter, ultimately resulting in the disorder phase becoming more dominant as α increases. The study finds that for α values close to two, the order–disorder transition is of the first order, while for small enough values of α, it shows degrees of similarities with the second-order phase transitions. The article formulates a mean field theory based on the growth of the swarmed clusters that accounts for the decrease in the transition point as α increases. The simulation results show that the order parameter exponent β, correlation length exponent ν, and susceptibility exponent γ remain constant when α is altered, satisfying a hyperscaling relation. The same happens for the mass fractal dimension, information dimension, and correlation dimension when α is far from two. The study reveals that the fractal dimension of the external perimeter of connected self-similar clusters conforms to the fractal dimension of Fortuin–Kasteleyn clusters of the two-dimensional Q=2 Potts (Ising) model. The critical exponents linked to the distribution function of global observables vary when α changes. Full article

Introduction: Paediatric pulmonary hypertension (PH) represents a heterogeneous illness that is responsible for high morbidity and mortality if left without treatment. Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is a subtype of PAH rarely seen in paediatrics. Limited long-term data are available. Methods: Over a period of 20 years, 10 paediatric patients were enrolled at two tertiary centres. Their clinical, echocardiographic, and right heart catheterisation (RHC) features and outcome were evaluated. Results: The mean age at first diagnosis was 5.7 ± 5.7 years. The age at the last follow-up was 12.4 ± 6.1 years. The average follow-up was 6.6 ± 0.8 years. There was a female prevalence of 60% (p < 0.05) in this case series. Regarding the NYHA functional class, 80% of IPAH subjects were in class III or IV. The mean saturation was 91 ± 5%. In this regard, 70% of the patients were on a combination of three drugs, with sildenafil (90%) included. On echocardiography, longitudinal right ventricular contractility (TAPSE) was slightly reduced (13.4 ± 2.6 mm), whilst RVSP was severely elevated (101 ± 19 mmHg). The RHC data showed that mPAP was 61.8 ± 23.1 mmHg (p = 0.0017 with RVSP on echocardiography), mRAP was 10.7 ± 3.8 mmHg, CI was 2.6 ± 1 L·min−1·m−2, PVRi was 16.8 ± 12.6 WU·m2, and SVO2 was 63.6 ± 14.8%. Regarding the outcome, two male IPAH patients (20%) died, and 50% underwent lung transplant or were on transplant assessment or already on the waiting list for lung transplantation. One patient underwent a ductus arteriosus stenting (reverse Potts shunt) and another underwent atrial septostomy and stenting. Conclusions: Notwithstanding the progress in medical therapy, IPAH continues to represent a serious challenge, particularly in the paediatric population, with the need for lung transplantation and significant mortality. The paper aims to present modelling the sensor network operation based on the Potts model. The authors presented own approach based on three states in which each node can be. The change in the state of a given node depends on its current state, the impact of surrounding nodes on it, but also values of the parameters measured. Therefore, the Hamiltonian was introduced as a dependence of both exceeding the limit value of a measured parameter (corresponding to an alarm event), and the state of the battery powering a given node of a sensor. The simulations of the implemented algorithm based on the adopted model presented in the paper relate to the measurement of temperature by a network of sensors. However, this model is universal and can be applied to examine the behaviour of the sensor infrastructure performing various measurements. Moreover, it may simulate the functioning of the critical network infrastructure or sensor networks and industrial sensors supporting the functioning of Industry 4.0. Full article

The aim of this study was to analyze results of stenting atrioseptostomy in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and a different level of risk for one-year mortality that is not well described. Patients that underwent atrioseptostomy with stenting were retrospectively divided in two groups: “intermediate” (n = 55) or “high” risk (n = 13), according to the 2015 ESC/ESR guideline. Results of atrioseptostomy were assessed during hospital period and at follow-up. Patients from “intermediate” risk group demonstrated lower mortality rate (10/55, vs. 6/13) during the course of the study period, as well as higher freedom from lung transplantation or Potts shunt. At discharge, patients of both groups presented improvement in functional class and mobility. Patients from “intermediate” risk group showed longer 6-min walking distance, and lower levels of brain natriuretic peptide. At the latest follow-up, stable position and full patency of stents with right-to-left or bidirectional shunt at atrial level and absence of syncope was confirmed in patients of both groups. Patients from the “intermediate” risk group demonstrated higher functional class, better performance of walking test, and lower levels of brain natriuretic peptide. Stenting atrioseptostomy reliably secured interatrial communication and improved clinical condition in patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension. Mid-term results were better in “intermediate” risk group. Full article

The Phonological Output Buffer (POB) is thought to be the stage in language production where phonemes are held in working memory and assembled into words. The neural implementation of the POB remains unclear despite a wealth of phenomenological data. Individuals with POB impairment make phonological errors when they produce words and non-words, including phoneme omissions, insertions, transpositions, substitutions and perseverations. Errors can apply to different kinds and sizes of units, such as phonemes, number words, morphological affixes, and function words, and evidence from POB impairments suggests that units tend to substituted with units of the same kind—e.g., numbers with numbers and whole morphological affixes with other affixes. This suggests that different units are processed and stored in the POB in the same stage, but perhaps separately in different mini-stores. Further, similar impairments can affect the buffer used to produce Sign Language, which raises the question of whether it is instantiated in a distinct device with the same design. However, what appear as separate buffers may be distinct regions in the activity space of a single extended POB network, connected with a lexicon network. The self-consistency of this idea can be assessed by studying an autoassociative Potts network, as a model of memory storage distributed over several cortical areas, and testing whether the network can represent both units of word and signs, reflecting the types and patterns of errors made by individuals with POB impairment. Railways have been used as one of the most crucial means of transportation in public mobility and economic development. For safe railway operation, the electrification system in the railway infrastructure, which supplies electric power to trains, is an essential facility for stable train operation. Due to its important role, the electrification system needs to be rigorously and regularly inspected and managed. This paper presents a supervised learning method to classify Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) data into ten target classes representing overhead wires, movable brackets and poles, which are key objects in the electrification system. In general, the layout of the railway electrification system shows strong spatial regularity relations among object classes. The proposed classifier is developed based on Conditional Random Field (CRF), which characterizes not only labeling homogeneity at short range, but also the layout compatibility between different object classes at long range in the probabilistic graphical model. This multi-range CRF model consists of a unary term and three pairwise contextual terms. In order to gain computational efficiency, MLS point clouds are converted into a set of line segments to which the labeling process is applied. Support Vector Machine (SVM) is used as a local classifier considering only node features for producing the unary potentials of the CRF model. As the short-range pairwise contextual term, the Potts model is applied to enforce a local smoothness in the short-range graph; while long-range pairwise potentials are designed to enhance the spatial regularities of both horizontal and vertical layouts among railway objects. We formulate two long-range pairwise potentials as the log posterior probability obtained by the naive Bayes classifier. The directional layout compatibilities are characterized in probability look-up tables, which represent the co-occurrence rate of spatial relations in the horizontal and vertical directions. The likelihood function is formulated by multivariate Gaussian distributions. In the proposed multi-range CRF model, the weight parameters to balance four sub-terms are estimated by applying the Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). The results show that the proposed multi-range CRF can effectively classify individual railway elements, representing an average recall of 97.66% and an average precision of 97.07% for all classes. We study the asymptotics in L2 for complexity penalized least squares regression for the discrete approximation of finite-dimensional signals on continuous domains—e.g., images—by piecewise smooth functions. We introduce a fairly general setting, which comprises most of the presently popular partitions of signal or image domains, like interval, wedgelet or related partitions, as well as Delaunay triangulations. Then, we prove consistency and derive convergence rates. Finally, we illustrate by way of relevant examples that the abstract results are useful for many applications. Full article
