Phenylalanine (Phe)-free protein substitutes (PSs) are used to provide an adequate intake of amino acids (AAs), except Phe, allowing control of blood Phe levels in patients with Phenylketonuria (PKU). Although indicated as a standard dietary treatment for these patients, free AAs mixtures are not absorbed as natural proteins, thus creating an oxidized and inflamed state in the intestine. Nowadays, PSs on the market also include slow-release amino acids (SR-AAs) formulas. The present work aims to investigate the effects of an SR-AAs formula on both oxidative and inflammatory status in human intestinal Caco-2 cells, comparing its mechanism of action with that of a mixture of free AAs. In more detail, oxidative stress and inflammation were induced at the cellular level using H2O2 and lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), respectively, and both free AAs and SR-AAs PSs were tested to evaluate if they were able to restore a more balanced condition. According to our findings, free AAs aggravate the intestinal oxidative and inflammatory status caused by H2O2 and LPS in human intestinal Caco-2 cells, which SR-AAs significantly improve. In conclusion, our results offer preclinical novelty on these products’ mechanisms of action, thus improving the dietary management of patients with PKU. Full article

(1) Background: Ethnic minorities exhibit a higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), while results for problematic substance use among ethnic groups remain mixed. PTSD and problematic substance use often co-occur; however, the impact of ethnicity on this association has not yet been investigated. (2) Methods: Self-report data on problematic alcohol/cannabis use (AUDIT/CUDIT) and presence of severe PTSD symptoms (PSS-SR) of N = 22,841 participants of Dutch (n = 4610), South-Asian Surinamese (n = 3306), African Surinamese (n = 4349), Ghanaian (n = 2389), Turkish (n = 3947), and Moroccan (n = 4240) origin were available from the HELIUS study. (3) Results: We found a positive association between the presence of severe PTSD symptoms and problematic alcohol and cannabis use. Ethnicity did not moderate the association between the presence of severe PTSD symptoms and problematic alcohol/cannabis use. (4) Conclusions: We demonstrated the relationship between the presence of severe PTSD symptoms and problematic alcohol/cannabis use in a multi-ethnic sample. The relationship between the presence of severe PTSD symptoms and problematic alcohol/cannabis use was similar between ethnic groups. We recommend screening for PTSD symptoms in those exhibiting problematic substance use and vice versa, regardless of ethnic background. Full article

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or specific PTSD symptoms may evoke maladaptive behaviors (e.g., compulsive buying, disordered eating, and an unhealthy lifestyle), resulting in adverse cardiometabolic events (e.g., hypertension and obesity), which may implicate the treatment of this complex condition. The diagnostic criteria for PTSD have lately expanded beyond the three common symptoms (intrusion, avoidance, and hyperarousal). Including additional symptoms such as emotional numbing, sleep disturbance, and irritability strengthens the representation of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), suggesting that models with four, five, or six dimensions better capture its structure compared to the original three-dimensional model. Methods: Using a convenience sample of 58 Russian dental healthcare workers (HCWs: mean age = 44.1 ± 12.2 years, 82.8% females), this instrumental study examined the convergent, concurrent, and criterion validity of two IES-R structures: IES-R3 and IES-R6. Results: Exploratory factor analysis uncovered five factors, which explained 76.0% of the variance in the IES-R. Subscales of the IES-R3 and the IES-R6 expressed good internal consistency (coefficient alpha range = 0.69–0.88), high convergent validity (item total correlations r range = 0.39–0.81, and correlations with the IES-R’s total score r range = 0.62–0.92), excellent concurrent validity through strong correlations with the PTSD Symptom Scale-Self Report (PSS-SR: r range = 0.42–0.69), while their criterion validity was indicated by moderate-to-low correlations with high body mass index (BMI: r range = 0.12–0.39) and the diagnosis of hypertension (r range = 0.12–0.30). In the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, all IES-R models were perfectly associated with the PSS-SR (all areas under the curve (AUCs) > 0.9, p values < 0.001). The IES-R, both hyperarousal subscales, and the IES-R3 intrusion subscale were significantly associated with high BMI. Both avoidance subscales and the IES-R3 intrusion subscale, not the IES-R, were significantly associated with hypertension. In the two-step cluster analysis, five sets of all trauma variables (IES-R3/IES-R6, PSS-SR) classified the participants into two clusters according to their BMI (normal weight/low BMI vs. overweight/obese). Meanwhile, only the IES-R, PSS-SR, and IES-R3 dimensions successfully classified participants as having either normal blood pressure or hypertension. Participants in the overweight/obese and hypertensive clusters displayed considerably higher levels of most trauma symptoms. Input variables with the highest predictor importance in the cluster analysis were those variables expressing significant associations in correlations and ROC analyses. However, neither IES-R3 nor IES-R6 contributed to BMI or hypertension either directly or indirectly in the path analysis. Meanwhile, age significantly predicted both health conditions and current smoking. Irritability and numbing were the only IES-R dimensions that significantly contributed to current smoking. Conclusions: The findings emphasize the need for assessing the way through which various PTSD symptoms may implicate cardiometabolic dysfunctions and their risk factors (e.g., smoking and the intake of unhealthy foods) as well as the application of targeted dietary and exercise interventions to lower physical morbidity in PTSD patients. However, the internal and external validity of our tests may be questionable due to the low power of our sample size. Replicating the study in larger samples, which comprise different physical and mental conditions from heterogenous cultural contexts, is pivotal to validate the results (e.g., in specific groups, such as those with confirmed traumatic exposure and comorbid mood dysfunction). Background and Aims. Dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) is a well-established non-invasive investigation for the detection of ischemic myocardial dysfunction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of myocardial deformation parameters measured by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) in predicting culprit coronary artery lesions in patients with prior revascularization and acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Methods. We prospectively studied 33 patients with ischemic heart disease, a history of at least one episode of ACS and prior revascularization. All patients underwent a complete stress Doppler echocardiographic examination, including the myocardial deformation parameters of peak systolic strain (PSS), peak systolic strain rate (SR) and wall motion score index (WMSI). The regional PSS and SR were analyzed for different culprit lesions. Results. The mean age of patients was 59 ± 11 years and 72.7% were males. At peak dobutamine stress, the change in regional PSS and SR in territories supplied by the LAD showed smaller increases compared to those in patients without culprit LAD lesions (p < 0.05 for all). Likewise, the regional parameters of myocardial deformation were reduced in patients with culprit LCx lesions compared to those with non-culprit LCx lesions and in patients with culprit RCA legions compared to those with non-culprit RCA lesions (p < 0.05 for all). In the multivariate analysis, the △ regional PSS (1.134 (CI = 1.059–3.315, p = 0.02)) and the △ regional SR (1.566 (CI = 1.191–9.013, p = 0.001)) for LAD territories predicted the presence of LAD lesions. Similarly, in a multivariable analysis, the △ regional PSS and the △SR predicted LCx culprit lesions and RCA culprit lesions (p < 0.05 for all). In an ROC analysis, the PSS and SR had higher accuracies compared to the regional WMSI in predicting culprit lesions. A △ regional SR of −0.24 for the LAD territories was 88% sensitive and 76% specific (AUC = 0.75; p < 0.001), a △ regional PSS of −1.20 was 78% sensitive and 71% specific (AUC = 0.76, p < 0.001) and a △ WMSI of −0.35 was 67% sensitive and 68% specific (AUC = 0.68, p = 0.02) in predicting LAD culprit lesions. Similarly, the △ SR for LCx and RCA territories had higher accuracies in predicting LCx and RCA culprit lesions. Conclusions. The myocardial deformation parameters, particularly the change in regional strain rate, are the most powerful predictors of culprit lesions. These findings strengthen the role of myocardial deformation in increasing the accuracy of DSE analyses in patients with prior cardiac events and revascularization. Full article

In this paper, we report a fast, linear wide-range hybrid flexible sensor based on a novel composite of strontium titanate (SrTiO3) and poly 3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) as a sensing layer. Inter-digitate electrodes (IDEs) were printed for humidity monitoring (finger: 250 µm; spacing: 140 µm; length: 8 mm) whilst a meander-based pattern was printed for the temperature measurement (meander thickness: 180 µm; spacing: 400 µm) on each side of the PET substrate using silver ink. Moreover, active layers with different concentration ratios were coated on the electrodes using a spray coating technique. The as-developed sensor showed an excellent performance, with a humidity measurement range of (10–90% RH) and temperature measurement range of (25–90 °C) with a fast response (humidity: 5 s; temperature: 4.2 s) and recovery time (humidity: 8 s; temperature: 4.4 s). The reliability of the sensor during mechanical bending of up to 5.5 mm was validated with a reliable performance. The sensor was also used in real-world applications to measure human respiration. For this, a suggested sensor-based autonomous wireless node was included in a 3D-printed mask. The manufactured sensor was an excellent contender for wearable and environmental applications because of its exceptional performance, which allowed for the simultaneous measurement of both quantities by a single sensing device. Herein, an ultra-sonication technique followed by a photoreduction technique was implemented to prepare silver nanoparticle-decorated Chitosan/SrSnO3 nanocomposites (Ag-decorated Chitosan/SrSnO3 NCs), and they were successively used as electron-sensing substrates coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the development of a 2,6-dinitrophenol (2,6-DNP) efficient electrochemical sensor. The synthesized NCs were characterized in terms of morphology, surface composition, and optical properties using FESEM, TEM, HRTEM, BET, XRD, XPS, FTIR, and UV-vis analysis. Ag-decorated Chitosan/SrSnO3 NC/GCE fabricated with the conducting binder (PEDOT:PSS) was found to analyze 2,6-DNP in a wide detection range (LDR) of 1.5~13.5 µM by applying the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) approach. The 2,6-DNP sensor parameters, such as sensitivity (54.032 µA µM−1 cm−2), limit of detection (LOD; 0.18 ± 0.01 µM), limit of quantification (LOQ; 0.545 µM) reproducibility, and response time, were found excellent and good results. Additionally, various environmental samples were analyzed and obtained reliable analytical results. Thus, it is the simplest way to develop a sensor probe with newly developed nanocomposite materials for analyzing the carcinogenic contaminants from the environmental effluents by electrochemical approach for the safety of environmental and healthcare fields in a broad scale. A combination of indirect soil investigation by proximal soil sensors (PSS), based on geophysical (ARP, EMI), physical (Cone Index –CI– by ultrasound penetrometry) and spectrometric (γ-rays) techniques, as well as pedological surveys, was applied in the field to assess the spatial variability of soil pollution and physical degradation in an automobile-battery recycling plant in southern Italy. Five homogeneous zones (HZs) were identified by the PSS and characterized by soil profiles. CI measurements and field analysis showed clear features of physical (i.e., soil compaction, massive structure) degradation. XRF in situ (on profiles) analysis using portable equipment (pXRF) showed Pb, Cd and As concentrations exceeding the contamination thresholds provided by the Italian regulation for industrial land use up to 20 or 100 cm of depth. Hence, a validation procedure, based on pXRF field survey, was applied to the PSS approach used for the HZs identification. High consistency was found between the HZs and the PTEs in the most contaminated areas. Significant negative Pearson correlation coefficients were found between γ-rays dose rate and Pb, Cu, Zn, As and Ni; positive ones were found between γ-rays and autochthonous lithogenic elements (V, Ti, Mn, K, Sr, Nb, Zr, Rb, Th), confirming that higher radionuclide activity correlated with lower pollution levels. The external surface of a commercial porous stainless steel (PSS) was modified by either oxidation in air at varying temperatures (600, 700, and 800 °C) or coating with different oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, and ZrO2). Among them, PSS-ZrO2 appears as the most suitable carrier for the synthesis of the Pd membrane. A composite Pd membrane supported on the PSS-ZrO2 substrate was prepared by the electroless plating deposition method. Supported Ru catalysts were first evaluated for the low-temperature methane dry reforming (DRM) reaction in a continuous flow reactor (CR). Ru/ZrO2-La2O3 catalyst was found to be active and stable, so it was used in a membrane reactor (MR), which enhances the methane conversions above the equilibrium values. The influence of adding H2O to the feed of DRM was investigated over a Ru/ZrO2-La2O3 catalyst in the MR. Activity results are compared with those measured in a CR. The addition of H2O into the feed favors other reactions such as Water-Gas Shift (RWGS) and Steam Reforming (SR), which occur together with DRM, resulting in a dramatic decrease of CO2 conversion and CO production, but a marked increase of H2 yield. The spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection has increased the risk of mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), and healthcare workers (HCWs) are at greater risk than other occupational groups. This observational cross-sectional study aimed to explore the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD among dental HCWs in Russia during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The survey was carried out among 128 dental HCWs from three dental clinics of Ekaterinburg, Russia. The mean age of the sample was 38.6 years. Depression, anxiety, and stress were assessed using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21); PTSD was assessed using the PTSD Symptom Scale-Self-Report (PSS-SR); subjective distress was assessed using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R). The results indicated that 20.3–24.2% HCWs had mild to extremely severe symptoms of psychological distress, and 7.1–29.7% had clinical symptoms of PTSD. No differences between females and males were revealed. HCWs working directly with patients had significantly higher levels of PTSD symptoms and the risk of PTSD development compared to those working indirectly, whereas older HCWs had significantly higher levels of both psychological distress and PTSD symptoms compared to younger HCWs. Thus, dental HCWs are at high risk for psychological distress and PTSD symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Full article

The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of echocardiographic techniques in detecting the early recovery of left ventricular (LV) function after revascularization in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). In 80 consecutive patients with ACS (age 55.7 ± 9.4 years, 77% male, 15% with CCS Angina III), an echocardiographic examination of left ventricle regional wall motion abnormalities (LV RWMA), peak systolic strain rate (PSSR), peak systolic strain (PSS) and end systolic strain (ESS) was performed before and after percutaneous intervention (PCI). Of the 80 patients, one vessel stenosis (>70%) was present in 53 (66%), two vessel disease in 12 (15%) and multivessel disease in 15 patients (19%). In total, 51% of patients had hypertension, 40% diabetes and 23% dyslipidemia. After PCI, regional PSS, ESS and PSSR of their segments subtended by the culprit vessel improved; left anterior descending-LAD, circumflex-LCx and right coronary-RCA (p<0.05 for all) as well as global S and SR (p < 0.05 for all). In univariate analysis, hypertension (HTN) (β = −0.294 (−0.313–0.047), p = 0.009, smoking β = −0.244 (−0.289–0.015) =0.03, WMA β = −0.317 (−0.284–0.014), p = 0.004 and the number of diseased vessels β = −0.256 (−0.188– 0.054) p=0.03 were predictors of delta global SR. In multivariate analysis, only HTN β = 0.263 (0.005–3.159) and the number of diseased vessels β =0.263 (0.005 - 3.159), p=0.04) predicted delta global SR. In ACS, the echocardiographic regional myocardial deformation is accurate in detecting early recovery of LV myocardial function after culprit lesion revascularization. Also, the findings of this study support the current practice regarding the crucial importance of proximal epicardial vessel PCI treatment on LV function compared to more distal lesions. Full article

The reflected radiance in topographically complex areas is severely affected by variations in topography; thus, topographic correction is considered a necessary pre-processing step when retrieving biophysical variables from these images. We assessed the performance of five topographic corrections: (i) C correction (C), (ii) Minnaert, (iii) Sun Canopy Sensor (SCS), (iv) SCS + C and (v) the Processing Scheme for Standardised Surface Reflectance (PSSSR) on the Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) reflectance in the context of prediction of Foliage Projective Cover (FPC) in hilly landscapes in north-eastern Australia. The performance of topographic corrections on the TM reflectance was assessed by (i) visual comparison and (ii) statistically comparing TM predicted FPC with ground measured FPC and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)-derived FPC estimates. In the majority of cases, the PSSSR method performed best in terms of eliminating topographic effects, providing the best relationship and lowest residual error when comparing ground measured FPC and LiDAR FPC with TM predicted FPC. The Minnaert, C and SCS + C showed the poorest performance. Finally, the use of TM surface reflectance, which includes atmospheric correction and broad Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) effects, seemed to account for most topographic variation when predicting biophysical variables, such as FPC.
