Population Structure of Aetobatus narinari (Myliobatiformes) Caught by the Artisanal Fishery in Northeast Brazil

In Brazil, the Whitespotted Eagle Ray Aetobatus narinari is considered data-deficient due to the scarcity of basic information on its biology, ecology, and vulnerability to capture. Despite this, the species is caught by artisanal fishing along most of the coast, especially in the northeast of Brazil. This study analyzed mitochondrial DNA data in specimens of A. narinari caught by artisanal fishing in the northeast coast of Brazil to understand their population structure. For this, 42 individuals were sequenced at three mitochondrial genes: cytochrome oxidase 1 (COI), cytochrome b (Cytb), and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 (ND4). Concatenated COI-Cytb-ND4 sequences yielded 14 haplotypes, with moderate haplotype diversity (h = 0.646), low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.00087), and low fixation index ΦST values, indicating no population structure. Our results suggest that there is only one population of A. narinari in the study area. Genetic studies can contribute to improving management plans in these areas, avoiding the overexploitation of this and other species. Full article

Members of the genus Brevitrygon are small, locally abundant tropical stingrays (family Dasyatidae) occurring in soft sedimentary habitats of inner continental shelves of the Indo-West Pacific from the Red Sea to Indonesia. Formerly members of the genus Himantura, whose members lack dorsal and ventral skin folds on the tail (typical of most dasyatid genera), folds are present or rudimentary in some Brevitrygon. Important to artisanal fisheries and known to consist of at least five species, these fishes are possibly the most frequently misidentified of all stingrays. Most were inadequately described in the 19th century, and they are often taxonomically confused due to morphological similarity, ontogenetic variability, and sexual dimorphism. Their nomenclatural history is complex with four of the known species represented within the type series of one species, B. walga (Müller & Henle). Also, the type of the species with which B. walga is most often confused, B. imbricata (Bloch & Schneider) from off southern India and Sri Lanka, is in very poor condition. A lectotype has been designated for B. walga (confined to the Bay of Bengal). The genus also contains B. heterura (Bleeker) from the Indo-Malay Archipelago, B. javaensis (Last & White) from off southern Indonesia, and a new species, B. manjajiae sp. nov., from the western Indian Ocean. The former species are redescribed and redefined based largely on a combination of morphometrics, tail morphology, squamation, and molecular data. Molecular divergences were detected within lineages of B. heterura, B. walga and B. manjajiae sp. nov., requiring further investigation. Full article

The age and growth of Urotrygon microphthalmum were studied using specimens captured between March 2010 and March 2012 as by-catch in the shrimp trawl fishery off the coast of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A total of 347 vertebrae were read, 161 from males (81.6–249.55 mm) and 186 from females (86.15–298.1 mm). The estimated average percentage index (IAPE) ranged from 0.71% to 4.33% (mean = 2.5%) in vertebrae from specimens with 1 and 6 band pairs, respectively. In the present study, the different approaches to validation produced variable results (partially valid growth zones). We then decided to discuss the growth of the species considering the formation of an annual ring. There were statistically significant differences in growth between the sexes. The best model to describe male growth was the von Bertalanffy growth model for two phases (VBGM TP) with growth parameters L (maximum theoretical length) = 230.35 mm, k (growth constant) = 1.00, t0 (theoretical age of size zero) = −0.76 years and for females it was the von Bertalanffy with birth size (VBGM L0) model with parameters L = 282.55 mm, k = 0.37. The age of maturity for males and females was 1.52 and 2.02 years, respectively, and the maximum age observed was 5.5 and 8.5 years, respectively. Despite being a fast-growing species, Urotrygon microphthalmum is threatened, probably due to the high mortality levels from shrimp trawling in a very narrow range of the shelf where all the life stages are captured. Cartilaginous fish are commonly recognized as key species in marine ecosystems for their fundamental ecological role as top predators. Nevertheless, effective management plans for cartilaginous fish are still missing, due to the lack of knowledge on their abundance, distribution or even life-history. In this regard, this paper aims at providing new information on the life-history traits, such as age, maturity, reproductive period, in addition to diet characteristics of eleven rare cartilaginous fish inhabiting the Central-Western Mediterranean Sea belonging to the orders Chimaeriformes (Chimaera monstrosa), Hexanchiformes (Heptranchias perlo and Hexanchus griseus), Myliobatiformes (Aetomylaeus bovinus and Myliobatis aquila), Rajiformes (Dipturus nidarosiensis and Leucoraja circularis), Squaliformes (Centrophorus uyato, Dalatias licha and Oxynotus centrina) and Torpediniformes (Tetronarce nobiliana), useful for their assessment and for future management actions. Particularly, the present paper provides for the first time the age estimation of D. nidarosienis and L. circularis which were both found capable of becoming older than ten years. In addition, the present study updates the sizes of first maturity of C. uyato and D. licha, which appeared to be capable of reproducing earlier than what was previously hypothesized, representing very valuable information for a better understanding of these rare species populations status and, eventually, their conservation. On the basis of the stomach content analysis, it was possible to identify five different predator groups. Full article
