Purpose: Working on computers for long hours has become a regular task for millions of people around the world. This has led to the increase of eye and vision issues related to prolonged computer use, known as computer vision syndrome (CVS). A main contributor to CVS caused by dry eyes is the reduction of blinking rates. In this pilot study, an intelligent, standalone eye blinking monitoring system to promote healthier blinking behaviors for computer users was developed using components that are affordable and easily available in the market. Methods: The developed eye blinking monitoring system used a camera to track blinking rates and operated audible, visual and tactile alarm modes to induce blinks. The hypothesis in this study is that the developed eye blinking monitoring system would increase eye blinks for a computer user. To test this hypothesis, the developed system was evaluated on 20 subjects. Results: The eye blinking monitoring system detected blinks with high accuracy (95.9%). The observed spontaneous eye blinking rate was 43.1 ± 14.7 blinks/min (mean ± standard deviation). Eye blinking rates significantly decreased when the subjects were watching movie trailers (25.2 ± 11.9 blinks/min; Wilcoxon signed rank test; p < 0.001) and reading articles (24.2 ± 12.1 blinks/min; p < 0.001) on a computer. The blinking monitoring system with the alarm function turned on showed an increase in blinking rates (28.2 ± 12.1 blinks/min) compared to blinking rates without the alarm function (25.2 ± 11.9 blinks/min; p = 0.09; Cohen’s effect size d = 0.25) when the subjects were watching movie trailers. Conclusions: The developed blinking monitoring system was able to detect blinking with high accuracy and induce blinking with a personalized alarm function. Further work is needed to refine the study design and evaluate the clinical impact of the system. This work is an advancement towards the development of a profound technological solution for preventing CVS. Full article

Glaucoma therapy aims at lowering intra-ocular pressure (IOP). Brinzolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, is utilized as a second-line medication for treating ocular hypertension and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). The drug lowers the IOP making it a therapeutic agent against glaucoma, and due to its poor water solubility, is commercially available as Azopt®, a 1% ophthalmic suspension. Adverse effects such as blurred vision, ocular irritation, discomfort, and bitter taste are associated with the use of the marketed brinzolamide formulation. This study aims to test the feasibility of formulating and in vitro testing of brinzolamide-PLGA nanoparticles for improved toxicity profile. The nanoparticles were prepared by the oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion-solvent evaporation method. Particle size and zeta potential were determined by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The morphology of the nanoparticles was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Encapsulation of the drug was verified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the compatibility of the polymer and drug was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The in vitro drug release profile was assessed employing the dialysis method. Intracellular localization of the nanoparticles was assessed by confocal microscopy utilizing Rhodamine 123-loaded nanoparticles. Cytotoxicity of the formulation was assessed on Statens Seruminstitut Rabbit Cornea (SIRC) and transfected Human Corneal Epithelial (SV40 HCEC) cell lines. The particle size of the nanoparticle formulations ranged from 202.3 ± 2.9 nm to 483.1 ± 27.9 nm for blank nanoparticles, and 129.6 ± 1.5 nm to 350.9 ± 8.5 nm for drug-loaded nanoparticles. The polydispersity of the formulations ranged from 0.071 ± 0.032 to 0.247 ± 0.043 for blank nanoparticles, and 0.089 ± 0.028 to 0.158 ± 0.004 for drug-loaded nanoparticles. Drug loading and encapsulation efficiencies ranged from 7.42–15.84% and 38.93–74.18%, respectively. The in vitro drug release profile for the optimized formulation was biphasic, with a ~54% burst release for the initial 3 h, followed by a cumulative 85% and 99% released at 24 and 65 h, respectively. Uptake study showed nanoparticles(NPs) localization in the cytoplasm and around the nuclei of the cells. Brinzolamide-PLGA nanoparticles were successfully developed, characterized, and tested in vitro. Preliminary data show intracellular localization of the nanoparticles in the cytoplasm of SIRC and SV40 HCEC cells. The formulations appeared to be relatively non-cytotoxic to the cells. The research data from the study provided preliminary data for successful development and promising in vitro absorption efficacy for brinzolamide-loaded PLGA nanoparticle formulation. Full article

The ultimate goal of innovation is to improve performance. But if people’s needs and uses are ignored, innovation will only be a formality. In the past, research on innovation mostly focused on technology, processes, business models, services, and organizations. The measurement of innovation focuses on capabilities, processes, results, and methods, but there has always been a lack of pre-innovation measurements and tools. This study is the first to use the innovation use theory proposed by Christensen et al. combined with innovation types, and it uses the measurement focus on the early stage of innovation as a post-innovation performance prediction. This study collected 590 valid samples and used SPSS and the four-step BK method to conduct regression analysis and mediation tests. The empirical results obtained the following: (1) a confirmed model and scale of the innovation use theory; (2) that three constructs of innovation use theory have an impact on market performance; and (3) that innovation types acting as mediators will improve market performance. This study establishes an academic model of the innovation use theory to provide a clear scale tool for subsequent research. In practice, it can first measure the direction of innovation and performance prediction, providing managers with a reference when developing new products and applying market strategies. Full article

Hybrid Bermuda grasses (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis Burtt.-Davy) represent one of the greatest contributions to the growing quality of turfgrass in the warm season and transition zone areas of the world. Hybrid Bermuda grass production relies on vegetative propagation from sod or sprigs. In the past, efforts have focused on improving the technique of stolonizing (or sprigging) for establishment in new areas. Such propagation requires bulk harvesting and planting of all rhizomes and stolons. We have developed a novel method of propagation and establishment from a single node harvested from greenhouse grown stolons. Despite a stolon fraction bearing a single node being suitable for effectively propagating a warm-season turfgrass, the technique has been held as economically impractical until now. Our method has been developed to obtain the multiplication of plant material in soilless conditions by harvesting single-node sprigs, propagation of plants from the single nodes, and transplant of single plants in the field. The investigation aimed to identify values for method set-up. Indeed, node and internode size variability with differential between maximum diameters is crucial for discrimination. For Patriot Bermuda grass stolons, nodes exhibited a maximum diameter of 2.43 ± 0.46 mm, while internodes had a maximum diameter of 1.54 ± 0.16 mm. Based on these findings, a 2 mm sieve was selected, achieving an optimal ratio between the node fraction and internode residues. The sieve yielded 87% of node fractions and only 1% of internodes from the initial mix, demonstrating its efficacy. Further results for the transplanting phase indicated that a double release resulted in an average success rate of 98.8%, with only 6.9% blank cells when using a single release. The average was 149 plants per tray over 160 cells, representing a 93.1% success rate. These results underscore the efficiency and acceptability of the overall propagation process in alignment with market references. Full article

The eyes are in constant movement to optimize the interpretation of the visual scene by the brain. Eye movements are controlled by complex neural networks that interact with the rest of the brain. The direction of our eye movements could thus be influenced by our cognitive activity (imagination, internal dialogue, memory, etc.). A given cognitive activity could then cause the gaze to move in a specific direction (a brief movement that would be instinctive and unconscious). Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), which was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder (psychologist and linguist respectively), issued a comprehensive theory associating gaze directions with specific mental tasks. According to this theory, depending on the visual path observed, one could go back to the participant's thoughts and cognitive processes. Although NLP is widely used in many disciplines (communication, psychology, psychotherapy, marketing, etc), to date, few scientific studies have examined the validity of this theory. Using eye tracking, this study explores one of the hypotheses of this theory, which is one of the pillars of NLP on visual language. We created a protocol based on a series of questions of different types (supposed to engage different brain areas) and we recorded by eye tracking the gaze movements at the end of each question while the participants were thinking and elaborating on the answer. Our results show that (1) complex questions elicit significantly more eye movements than control questions that necessitate little reflection, (2) the movements are not random but are oriented in selected directions, according to the different question types, (3) the orientations observed are not those predicted by the NLP theory. This pilot experiment paves the way for further investigations to decipher the close links between eye movements and neural network activities in the brain. Full article

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a sustainable technology resulting from the synergism between biotechnology and electrochemistry, exploiting diverse fundamental aspects for the development of numerous applications, including wastewater treatment and energy production. Nevertheless, these devices currently present several limitations and operational restrictions associated with their performance, efficiency, durability, cost, and competitiveness against other technologies. Accordingly, the synthesis of nD nanomaterials (n = 0, 1, 2, and 3) of particular interest in MFCs, methods of assembling a biofilm-based electrode material, in situ and ex situ physicochemical characterizations, electrochemistry of materials, and phenomena controlling electron transfer mechanisms are critically revisited in order to identify the steps that determine the rate of electron transfer, while exploiting novel materials that enhance the interaction that arises between microorganisms and electrodes. This is expected to pave the way for the consolidation of this technology on a large scale to access untapped markets. Full article

Although (micro)plastic contamination is a worldwide concern, most scientific literature only restates that issue rather than presenting strategies to cope with it. This critical review assembles the current knowledge on policies and responses to tackle plastic pollution, including peer-reviewed scientific literature, gray literature and relevant reports to provide: (1) a timeline of policies directly or indirectly addressing microplastics; (2) the most up-to-date upstream responses to prevent microplastics pollution, such as circular economy, behavioral change, development of bio-based polymers and market-based instruments as well as source-specific strategies, focusing on the clothing industry, tire and road wear particles, antifouling paints and recreational activities; (3) a set of downstream responses tackling microplastics, such as waste to energy, degradation, water treatment plants and litter clean-up strategies; and examples of (4) multifaceted responses focused on both mitigating and preventing microplastics pollution, e.g., approaches implemented in fisheries and aquaculture facilities. Preventive strategies and multifaceted responses are postulated as pivotal to handling the exacerbated release of microplastics in the environment, while downstream responses stand out as auxiliary strategies to the chief upstream responses. The information gathered here bridges the knowledge gaps on (micro)plastic pollution by providing a synthesized baseline material for further studies addressing this environmental issue. Full article

We present our own Interdigitated Back Contact (IBC) technology, which was developed at ISC Konstanz and implemented in mass production with and at SPIC Solar in Xining, China, with production efficiencies of over 24%. To our knowledge, this is the highest efficiency achieved in the mass production of crystalline silicon solar cells without the use of charge-carrier-selective contacts. With an adapted screen-printing sequence, it is possible to achieve open-circuit voltages of over 700 mV. Advanced module technology has been developed for the IBC interconnection, which is ultimately simpler than for conventional double-sided contacted solar cells. In the next step, we will realize low-cost charge-carrier-selective contacts for both polarities in a simple sequence using processes developed and patented at ISC Konstanz. With the industrialisation of this process, it will be possible to achieve efficiencies well above 25% at low cost. We will show that with the replacement of silver screen-printed contacts by copper or aluminium metallisation, future IBC technology will be the end product for the PV market, as it is the best performing c-Si technology, leading to the lowest cost of electricity, even in utility-scale applications. In the post-epidemic era, the e-commerce industry has become an important engine to promote the new round of growth in China’s economy. However, the frequent quality problems of products, such as shoddy goods and improper products in the market, not only violate the legitimate rights and interests of consumers and social and public interests, but also seriously restrict the steady and sound development of the e-commerce industry. This paper uses evolutionary game theory to build an evolutionary game model between the government, platform, and merchants, and it analyzes the stable evolution path of the game system and the key factors affecting product quality optimization under the situation of dual strategy set, and then it expands the game side strategy set into a continuous type and compares and explores the regulatory effects and quality output changes under the two situations. Then, it puts forward effective measures to improve the quality of e-commerce products. The findings are as follows: in the case of a binary strategy set, it is difficult for merchants to steadily evolve towards compliance management, while merchants’ violation management only has the willingness to improve their efforts when the scale of consumers is small. In the case of continuous policy set, government–enterprise cooperative supervision can realize the compliance operation of merchants, and the effort level and income of merchants are consistent with the optimal value in the case of dual policy set. The results show that the government and e-commerce platforms should adhere to the concept of dynamic regulation and adjust the regulatory strategies according to the different development stages of enterprises so as to not only give merchants sufficient development space, but also to maintain the healthy development environment of the market. At the same time, the government and e-commerce platforms should also avoid the binary choice of supervision or neglect, adopt flexible regulatory strategies, and maintain moderate flexible regulation so as to achieve the development trend of compliance, efforts, and profits of merchants. The substantial growth in shale-derived natural gas production in the US has caused significant changes in the chemical and petrochemical markets. Ethylene production of ethane and naphtha via steam cracking is one of the most energy- and emission-intensive activities in chemical manufacturing. High operating temperatures, high reaction endothermicity, and complex separation create high energy demands as well as considerable CO2 emissions. In this study, a demonstration of a transformational methane-to-ethylene process that offers lower emissions using energy optimization and a CO2 minimum-emission approach is presented. The comparisons of different reforming processes suggest that the dry reforming of methane has a negative carbon footprint at low syngas ratios of 1 and below, and that additional carbon emissions can be reduced using integrated heating and cooling utilities, resulting in a 99.24 percent decrease in CO2. A process design implemented to convert methane into value-added chemicals with minimum CO2 emissions is developed. Full article

Based on the survey data of 43 rural commercial banks in Jiangsu Province, China, from 2015 to 2018, 14 indicators among 3 dimensions—coverage, business implementation and service quality—were selected to establish the inclusive finance index of rural commercial banks. The impact of market competition and government intervention on the development of the inclusive finance of rural commercial banks and the mechanism were empirically tested. The heterogeneous performance of market competition and government intervention in different market conditions were also thoroughly discussed. The results show that both market competition and government intervention can help reduce the pricing level and broaden the service coverage of rural commercial banks, which can promote the development of inclusive finance. But the role of market competition has a stronger impact than that of government intervention. The heterogeneity test shows that market competition plays a more significant role in the regions with higher levels of market competition and financial development, and in the southern and central Jiangsu Province, where the economy is relatively more developed. However, in the regions with lower levels of market competition and financial development, as well as in the northern Jiangsu Province, with a relatively backward economy, government intervention significantly improves the degree of inclusive finance of rural commercial banks. Finally, we advocate that the roles of market and government should be applied according to local conditions, and the development of the inclusive finance in rural commercial banks needs to be continuously promoted. E-commerce has developed greatly in recent years, as such, its regulations have become one of the most important research areas in order to implement a sustainable market. The analysis of a large amount of reviews data generated in the shopping process can be used to facilitate regulation: since the review data is short text and it is easy to extract the features through deep learning methods. Through these features, the sentiment analysis of the review data can be carried out to obtain the users’ emotional tendency for a specific product. Regulators can formulate reasonable regulation strategies based on the analysis results. However, the data has many issues such as poor reliability and easy tampering at present, which greatly affects the outcome and can lead regulators to make some unreasonable regulatory decisions according to these results. Blockchain provides the possibility of solving these problems due to its trustfulness, transparency and unmodifiable features. Based on these, the blockchain can be applied for data storage, and the Long short-term memory (LSTM) network can be employed to mine reviews data for emotional tendencies analysis. In order to improve the accuracy of the results, we designed a method to make LSTM better understand text data such as reviews containing idioms. In order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method, different experiments were used for verification, with all results showing that the proposed method can achieve a good outcome in the sentiment analysis leading to regulators making better decisions. New medical technologies can transform healthcare, and automation of processes is becoming increasingly ubiquitous within the patient care sector. Many innovative ideas arise from academia, but regulations need to be taken into account if they want to reach the market and create a real impact. This is particularly relevant for applied fields, such as prosthetics, which continuously generates cutting-edge solutions. However, it remains unclear how well the regulatory pathway is supported within universities. This study applied a data-driven assessment of available online information regarding support of medical device regulations within universities. A total of 109,200 URLs were screened for regulatory information associated with universities in the UK and the USA. The results show that based on available online data, 55% of the selected universities in the UK and 35% in the USA did not provide any support for medical device regulations. There is a big discrepancy between universities in terms of the available support, as well as the kind of information that is made accessible by the academic institutes. It is suggested that increasing support for regulatory strategies during the early phases of research and development will likely yield a better translation of technologies into clinical care. Optimal investment decisions by institutional investors require accurate predictions with respect to the development of stock markets. Motivated by previous research that revealed the unsatisfactory performance of existing stock market prediction models, this study proposes a novel prediction approach. Our proposed system combines Artificial Intelligence (AI) with data from Virtual Investment Communities (VICs) and leverages VICs’ ability to support the process of predicting stock markets. An empirical study with two different models using real data shows the potential of the AI-based system with VICs information as an instrument for stock market predictions. VICs can be a valuable addition but our results indicate that this type of data is only helpful in certain market phases. Full article

The global human population is growing at a rapid rate leading to the need for continued expansion of food animal production to meet the world’s increasing nutritional requirements. As a consequence of this increased production demand, the use of high volume, animal dense systems have expanded providing high quality protein at reduced costs. Backyard animal production has also expanded. This increased food animal production has facilitated the rapid spread, mutation, and adaptation of pathogens to new hosts. This scenario continues to drive the emergence and reemergence of diseases in livestock species increasing the urgency for development and availability of vaccines for transboundary animal diseases (TADs). Even though vaccines are widely recognized as being an essential tool for control of TADs, there are many scientific, economic, political, and logistical challenges to having vaccine available to control an outbreak. This article will focus on examples of the challenges associated with having vaccines available for emergency response, as well as the characteristics of “ideal” TAD vaccines, the need for complementary diagnostic assays, and hurdles involved in bringing efficacious veterinary TAD vaccines to market including regulatory constraints and considerations for stockpiling vaccines for emergency use in non-endemic countries. Examples will also highlight the complicated interplay between animal health and human health and demonstrate the lasting benefits that can be gained from an efficacious vaccine.
