Background: The updated definition of a TIA emphasizes tissue characteristics rather than symptom duration, defining a TIA as a transient neurological episode without ischemic lesions in brain imaging, including in DWI. If imaging reveals a lesion, even in patients with transient symptoms, the event is reclassified as a minor ischemic stroke. Objective: This retrospective observational study aimed to determine the prevalence of ischemic lesions in DWI in patients with a TIA diagnosis. Results: Adults aged 18–90 years, diagnosed with a TIA by a neurologist and who underwent MRI-DWI at CMT hospital within the first week after symptom onset (May 2023–July 2024), were included. Ethical approval was obtained. Descriptive statistics summarized patient demographics, clinical features, Fazekas scale grades, and imaging findings. Conclusions: Among the 26 patients clinically diagnosed with TIAs, 7 (26.9%) exhibited ischemic lesions in DWI, reclassifying these cases as minor ischemic strokes under the updated definition. The prevalence of ischemic lesions was notably higher in patients with comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes. These findings highlight the importance of early MRI-DWI to accurately distinguish TIAs from minor ischemic strokes. Routine urgent DWI within the first week of TIA symptoms enhances diagnosis and risk stratification and can guide targeted stroke prevention strategies, particularly when combined with the ABCD2 score. Background/Objectives: Eating disorders (EDs) are rising among adolescents. BMI, diet, and physical activity influence ED risk, but their interactions are complex and vary by population. Considering sociocultural changes, this study investigated the prevalence and risk factors for EDs in Romanian adolescents. We evaluated demographic factors, BMI, dietary behaviors, physical activity (PA), and previous specialist consultations using the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) and assessed the psychometric properties of the EAT-26 in this population. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 423 youths aged 13 to 20 from Cluj-Napoca. Participants completed an online survey on demographics, BMI, diet, physical activity, and previous health consultations. ED risk was assessed using the EAT-26. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses were conducted on the EAT-26, and binary logistic regression identified predictors of ED risk. Results: The prevalence of ED risk was 26.5%, with females having 1.61 times higher odds than males. Consulting a weight or mental health specialist increased the odds of increased ED risk (OR = 3.76). Higher BMI showed a trend in the unadjusted model (OR = 1.06). An initial CFA of the EAT-26 showed a suboptimal fit. Over 60% of the sample reported frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods. Conclusions: Our findings highlight a significant ED risk in Romanian youth, filling a critical gap in regional public health evidence. Despite limitations due to the cross-sectional design and self-reported data, the results stress the need for measures promoting balanced diets, positive body image, and improved mental health access to reduce the growing prevalence of adolescent ED risk in Romania. This study investigates the correlation between REM sleep patterns, as measured by the Apple Watch, and depressive symptoms in an undiagnosed population. Employing the Apple Watch for data collection, REM sleep duration and frequency were monitored over a specified period. Concurrently, participants’ depressive symptoms were evaluated using standardized questionnaires. The analysis, primarily using Spearman’s correlation, revealed noteworthy findings. A significant correlation was observed between an increased REM sleep proportion and higher depressive symptom scores, with a correlation coefficient of 0.702, suggesting a robust relationship. These results highlight the potential of using wearable technology, such as the Apple Watch, in early detection and intervention for depressive symptoms, suggesting that alterations in REM sleep could serve as preliminary indicators of depressive tendencies. This approach offers a non-invasive and accessible means to monitor and potentially preempt the progression of depressive disorders. This study’s implications extend to the broader context of mental health, emphasizing the importance of sleep assessment in routine health evaluations, particularly for individuals exhibiting early signs of depressive symptoms. The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019 reveals an increasing prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) from 1990 to 2019. This study delves into the role of dietary risk factors across different demographic and socioeconomic groups. Utilizing data from the GBD 2019, it analyzes age-adjusted T2DM metrics—death counts, Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), and Age-Standardized Rates (ASRs)—stratified by age, sex, and region. The study employed Estimated Annual Percentage Changes (EAPCs) to track trends over time. The results show that in 2019, 26.07% of T2DM mortality and 27.08% of T2DM DALYs were attributable to poor diets, particularly those low in fruits and high in red and processed meats. There was a marked increase in both the death rate and DALY rate associated with dietary risks over this period, indicating the significant impact of dietary factors on the global T2DM landscape. Geographic variations in T2DM trends were significant, with regions like Southern Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia experiencing the most substantial increases in Age-Standardized Mortality Rate (ASMR) and Age-Standardized DALY Rate (ASDR). A positive correlation was noted between Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) and T2DM burden due to dietary risk factors. The study concludes that targeted public health initiatives promoting dietary changes could substantially reduce the global T2DM burden. Full article

This study investigates food literacy-related abilities and adherence to dietary recommendations in relation to sociodemographic characteristics and health-related features (health literacy, self-rated health and morbidity) in the North-Western region of Romania. This is a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data collected in 2019 from a representative and randomised sample of 1572 individuals. A questionnaire was employed to record participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, food-related and health-related features. Most participants were non-adherent to dietary recommendations for fruit and vegetables (83.5%), fish and seafood (61.3%), and water intake (67.9%). However, most participants reported an adequate ability to understand the connection between nutrition and health (89.1%), to distinguish between healthy and less healthy options (84.4%), and to acquire nutrition information (75.6%). Non-adherence to dietary recommendations and low food literacy abilities were more prevalent in disadvantaged groups (older age, rural settings, retirement or social welfare, low educational attainment, formerly married). Health literacy was negatively associated with not adhering to dietary recommendations and poor self-rated food literacy abilities. The study suggests that low socioeconomic status negatively impacts food literacy and adherence to dietary recommendations among Romanian adults. Identifying target populations to improve food-related abilities and health literacy can aid public health services in improving health outcomes. Full article

On 24 February 2022, the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine, starting a military conflict that soon turned into a full-scale war. The Romanians have been actively involved in helping their neighbors, causing the accumulation of emotional and mental pressure upon the Romanian population exposed to such a close military conflict. This cross-sectional study assessed, through an online survey (1586 adult Romanian residents), the primary coping mechanisms, quality of life and anxiety levels in response to the psychological trauma associated with the Russo—Ukrainian war. Based on the results, focusing on and venting emotions along with behavioral disengagement were the coping strategies that had the strongest negative impact on anxiety and well-being. On the other hand, positive reinterpretation and growth were associated with less anxiety, a higher degree of overall health and better quality of life. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to be performed among the Romanian population so far. Thus, we equip mental health practitioners with the tools (real-life evidence data) that will allow them to establish a more meaningful doctor—patient relationship, maximizing therapy results. Endogenous depression represents a severe mental health condition projected to become one of the worldwide leading causes of years lived with disability. The currently available clinical and non-clinical interventions designed to alleviate endogenous depression-associated symptoms encounter a series of inconveniences, from the lack of intervention effectiveness and medication adherence to unpleasant side effects. In addition, depressive individuals tend to be more frequent users of primary care units, which markedly affects the overall treatment costs. In parallel with the growing incidence of endogenous depression, researchers in sleep science have discovered multiple links between rapid eye movement (REM) sleep patterns and endogenous depression. Recent findings suggest that prolonged periods of REM sleep are associated with different psychiatric disorders, including endogenous depression. In addition, a growing body of experimental work confidently describes REM sleep deprivation (REM-D) as the underlying mechanism of most pharmaceutical antidepressants, proving its utility as either an independent or adjuvant approach to alleviating the symptoms of endogenous depression. In this regard, REM-D is currently being explored for its potential value as a sleep intervention-based method for improving the clinical management of endogenous depression. Therefore, this narrative review represents a comprehensive inventory of the currently available evidence supporting the potential use of REM-D as a reliable, non-pharmaceutical approach for treating endogenous depression, or as an adjuvant practice that could improve the effectiveness of currently used medication. Background and Objectives: Traumatic brain injuries represent an important source of disease burden requiring emergency inpatient care and continuous outpatient tailored rehabilitation. Although most TBIs are mild, patients are still developing post-TBI depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairments. Our secondary retrospective trial analysis aimed to (1) analyze correlations between HADS-Anxiety/HADS-Depression and scales that measure cognitive and motor processes in patients treated with Cerebrolysin compared to the placebo group and (2) compare anxiety and depression scores among the two treatment groups. Materials and Methods: Our secondary retrospective analysis focused on TBI patients with moderate and severe disability divided into two groups: Cerebrolysin (treatment) and saline solution (procedural placebo). We analyzed data from 125 patients. We computed descriptive statistics for nominal and continuous variables. We used Spearman’s correlation to find associations between HADS and other neuropsychological scales and the Mann–Whitney U test to compare HADS-Anxiety and HADS-Depression scores among the two study arms. Results: Our sample consisted of patients with a mean age of 45.3, primarily men, and with a 24 h GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) mean of 12.67. We obtained statistically significant differences for HADS-Anxiety during the second and third visits for patients treated with Cerebrolysin. Our results show that Cerebrolysin has a large effect size (0.73) on anxiety levels. In addition, there are positive and negative correlations between HADS-Anxiety and Depression subscales and other neuropsychological scales. Conclusions: Our secondary database analysis supports the existing body of evidence on the positive effect of Cerebrolysin on post-TBI mental health status. Future confirmatory trials are necessary to clarify the link between the intervention and measured outcomes. Full article
