Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant and increasing burden on healthcare systems globally. This was highlighted by the UNGA special meeting in 2024, where countries recommitted to working to slow down rates of resistance, decrease mortality, improve infection prevention and control (IPC) practices, and commit to research into innovative treatment options.

The burden of AMR is highest in low- and middle-income countries, where mortality rates are high. This is compounded by insufficient WASH, overcrowding, and limited IPC implementation, as well as limited access to life-saving antibiotics and diagnostic tests.

AMR is a complex problem requiring a multipronged approach to prevent a rise in resistance rates at both systemic and individual levels. This includes a robust supply chain providing guaranteed access to life-saving medication and the development of new antibiotics. Antimicrobial stewardship interventions encourage the timely use of appropriate antibiotics in order to improve patient outcomes and the implementation of rigorous IPC practices to minimise the spread of resistant infections, especially in hospital settings.

This Special Issue covers the topic of antimicrobial resistance, focusing on treatment approaches and experiences, as well as perspectives on implementing programs and practices to help reduce the burden of AMR in both community and hospital settings. We invite submissions ranging from original research papers and reviews to case reports submitted by healthcare providers, microbiologists, public health specialists, epidemiologists, and social scientists, which will contribute to the knowledge pool of AMR and improve treatment and prevention strategies.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
