Feature papers represent the most advanced research with significant potential for high impact in the field. A Feature Paper should be a substantial original Article that involves several techniques or approaches, provides an outlook for future research directions and describes possible research applications.
Feature papers are submitted upon individual invitation or recommendation by the scientific editors and must receive positive feedback from the reviewers.
Editor’s Choice articles are based on recommendations by the scientific editors of MDPI journals from around the world. Editors select a small number of articles recently published in the journal that they believe will be particularly interesting to readers, or important in the respective research area. The aim is to provide a snapshot of some of the most exciting work published in the various research areas of the journal.

For many years in the past, the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (ACTM) used to hand out the John M Goldsmid Award for the best paper published in its official journal, the Annals of the ACTM. The Award had been established in honour of Emeritus Professor John M Goldsmid, who was the Inaugural Editor of the Annals, from 2002–2008. He was also ACTM President 1998–2000 and was elected as an Honorary Fellow of the College in 2001.
The award now continues to be presented in the society's current affiliated journal, Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease, with the first paper to be awarded by the end of 2018, selected from all papers published in Tropical Medicine since 2016.
Some general information about the award:
– The award is given annually to recognize and reward excellence and innovation in the areas of tropical medicine and infectious disease and related areas.
– The winner will be selected by a panel of distinguished Editorial Board members of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease.
– The winner will receive a cash honorarium of 500 CHF, a certificate, and the privilege of publishing an additional open-access format paper of their choice free of charge in Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease.
The initial awards will be announced here by the end of 2018.
